  1. It is rare that a consumer item such as hifi is an "investment", sure if you could rewind the clock and buy a Mcintosh MC240 for list which I think was 248.00 or a Marantz 10b, or in the car world a Mercedes 1970 280SL. But in my humble opinion, if one buys a collectable now, what will it be worth in 10-15 yrs, tough to say, I mean are the 25-30 yr olds of today going to be looking for a Mcintosh 240 or Marantz 10b...I highly doubt it. Their youth is computers, iPods, phones, and gadgets. Now maybe if you have on of the 1st Mac computers, that maybe the new collectable down the road.
  2. Yes totally isolating the problem is key, but 2 different sticks doing the same exact thing in one machine...leads me to the machine. Just don't have access to another machine.
  3. I am totally new to this but agree with above, found Murfie.com and it is quite good, lots at $2-4.00 some at 6.00 and up, but is easy and for a computer dunce like me thats a biggie.
  4. Well I was playing the other stick and WHAMO did the same thing, randomly, was playing it earlier with no problem, going forward and reverse etc and well past the song it now won't advance. So it is not a defective stick, something else is a miss, very frustrating.
  5. Thanks, yes 1st things 1st for me, need to get this digital stuff figured out. I am having a problem with either the Dac or stick, which I started a new thread on.
  6. I have 4 systems, this one is a naim nDac/Supernait/flatcap2x into a pair of B&W Cm2 bookshelf sp. I have another pair of Cm2 next to them, they both sit on top of my K horns, which make great stands...I am not kidding, the sound of the Cm2s slightly elevated and near a wall with good gear is quite room filling. I also have a pair of B&W Cm4 floor standing that go in front of the Khorns. other gear...Linn, Mcintosh, Vtl and some rebuilt Dynaco ST 70 tube amps. Yep it is a roomful.
  7. Hi, appreciate the info and tips, big help, yes the nDac has actually 2 usb inputs. Is it thought that using flac files, if thats the right term into a USB will give the best sound ?
  8. Hello I have just gotten into the basics of digital and am recording via USB stick and Flac and going into a Naim nDac. I was playing it fine and advancing forward all through the stick, then added some more music to it, started playing it again. I was advancing track to track using 8 on the remote, then i accidentally hit 0 and the music stops and the light on the dad flashes, i rehit 0 and it seems fine, I then advance to the next track and it plays but when I try to advance again, it won't. I take the stick and start over, keep advancing till I come to the same song, same thing, plays, won't advance then i let the song end, stick stops, does not advance on its own. Today I took out the song and trashed it, now stick stops at the song before it. I can't imagine by hitting a wrong button this would happen, but don't know, and I have zipped all thru this stick earlier with no problem, so it was working fine. I have about 14 Lps on another stick and that is working fine, was on the naim forum, But can't seem to find out why this happened. any thoughts, thanks, Ben
  9. Hi thanks for the tips and the link, yes for now I am using a USB stick and downloading it to my computer and then drag the songs/files into the stick, via Flac, as my converter only plays flac and wav. and that does work and sounds very good.
  10. Hi, many thanks for the input. This is where I get a bit confused. I tunes doesn't have Flac, but what you are saying is once I download the music to I tunes, it can be converted there ? Does a USB stick and a computer front ended source sound the same, going thru the same DAC of course ? or does one sound better. Thanks, Ben
  11. Hello, newbie here. I see people using their computer as a front end, I am totally green to this, how to hook up, how to control it, how to download etc. I have some Naim gear I am trying to do this with. Specifically a nDac. I have just recently downloaded some music on some USB sticks. I am just learning about these things called files, I have used FLAC, as Naim only accepts that or Wav. I have a 2011 Mini, which I have seen people post in the system pic dept sitting in a cabinet like it was a cd player. I also have an I pad, any help would be appreciated, thanks, Ben
