Guys:
I have been trolling the site for weeks as I am preparing to make a major upgrade to my whole system.
The plan is to convert my existing home theater which is driven by blueray player and denon receiver into a higher level system.
Initial plans are for stereo but I will likely buy a 5 channel-amp or something like the bryston 9b that can be expanded. Totally off subject, but background.
I am looking to build my first media player/server and move all my CD's and movies onto one piece of equipment. My current computer is on a different floor from my home theater, networking would be possible via cat-5 but not usb to a dac that far. Thus the need for a separate media server.
1. Am I correct in understanding that I can build a standard wndows 7 computer with 2-4TB of storage and use JRiver to feed a DAC which will be plugged into my preamp/receiver?
2. Specifically, do need something between the computer and the DAC to feed the files? I thought not, but have read conflicting information.
3. I was curious if anyone has sources where one can custom build a DAC much like a computer, or is it just not worth the effort?
When you are done laughing at my noob questions, I thank anyone for their response.
