  1. I used to fret on these distinctions myself for the longest time. Now I just call it HiFi because of the fanciness in the playback chain, not the source media itself. I would go crazy trying to guess how the original one was made. I sort of also learned not to trust online music stores, even the audiophile ones. Case in point, I remember for us rock fans it was kind of a big thing when Metallica's black album was released in "HiRes" from a store I will not name. In forums most agreed the CD sounded better; some dug deeper and apparently the HiRes 24/96 FLAC was based on the already diluted one made for the 5.1 from the A-DVD that was sold some time ago. So what's the true source? It all comes down to this, right? The only thing I can think of is that Studio's make the master recording information public, if that's the one the artist/ Studio is releasing, and have it displayed in the streaming services and such. Or maybe showing a screenshot of the Pro Tools working file? 😉
  2. To all the vinyl nerds here Wondering if anyone in this forum has any experience with companies that do custom vinyl pressings. I only know of Vinylfy and American Vinyl Co. I am editing a live recording from a band I like and would love to hear it via my turntable and create cool artwork, like a cool little project. So the question is, besides these 2 places, where would one go for custom vinyl pressings?
  3. Hi guys, My DNA Starlett tube headphone amp arrived (FINALLY) and when I showed Don my setup he advised against putting his amp as the next component on top of my Power Conditioner; something about transformers, hum and other concerns that can impact operation. If I am gonna rearrange my components, would rather have the tube amp on top and have the turntable after the DA; my OCD gets the better of my and want to stack sources together (analog and digital). Ideal order would look like this (bottom to top): 1. Power Conditioner (Audioquest Niagara 1200) 2. DAC/Streamer (PS Directstream Jr) 3. Turntable (Rega RP1+), dust cover removed 4. Solid state Headphone amps (Pass HPA-1, Mjolnir Octave) 5. DNA Starlett Other than having enough vertical space to change speed and moving the tonearm into place, cannot see what the problem is in not having a turntable on top of an audio rack. Thinking about adding one of those ISO Acoustic Zazen platforms to hopefully offset acoustic issues that might arise if I make this move. The rack itself is pretty heavy (custom made) and ASAK pretty inert. Am I so wrong in wanting this? PS considering adding a Schiit Loki/ Freya stack between the turntable and solid state amps MAYBE. Right now the DNA amp goes through the Pass's Line Out for operation, which makes volume control a bit of a mess.
  4. Hi guys This is my current setup: and adding this DNA tube headphone amp: I had originally planned on placing it right above the Power Conditioner, but was advised not to by Don (from DNA) because of electronics interference. So, what do you guys think of this order? Bottom to top 1. Power conditioner 2. DAC/ Streamer 3. Solid state headphone amps 4. Vacuum tube headphone amp 5. Turntable If it were up to me, I would honestly place the turntable at No3 and get rid of the plastic cover, but pretty much every photo I see of a hi-fi rack has a turntable sitting on top of it. The reason for this I would assume is to be able to open up the cover. The rig is a custom made one and is very heavy and does not move, so don't know how acoustics would play into this. If its meant for showing off, I believe having a pretty tube amp on top like the Starlett makes the rig look even nicer. Any advise?
  5. Thank you for your reply. What you wrote make total sense. I just also learned that Pass recommends the HPA-1 to be on at all times for max performance. I assume the TT2 being a more "digital" component than the Pass warm up is less of an issue?
  6. Hi guys, Judging the amp section alone, has anybody compared the TT2 to the Nelson Pass HPA-1? I'm looking into the either the TT2 or a combination of Qutest + Pass for my headphone playback. I know the TT2 has more features for about $200-300 less than the Qutest/Pass combo, but cross-feed and possibly IEM playback don't matter to me really. Not counting the addition of an M Scaler, the amount of taps in the TT2 seems to be the feature the Qutest truly lacks over the TT2, at least for my intended use. Have not heard the Pass amp to be honest, but since it was apparently voiced with the HD800s and LCD-X in mind (have the HD800 and LCD-XC), I am wondering if choosing a DAC/amp combo makes sense.
  7. Hi all, Are downloaded music files from the Apple Music subscription service stored at the same folder/directory as the items I have bought? Want to send all my music to an external NAS (Synology DS216J). I should think it's not a problem, but I see Apple Music files as temporary-ish (subscription dependent) and I wouldn't want new music to be stored in a different place than the stuff I bought before. Want to setup a media server on a Mac Mini with 256 SSD and only have the OS installed; have everything else on my 8TB NAS, including Apple Music downloads. Is this as easy as it sounds?
  8. Here's a link that The Computer Audiophile Chris and fellow PJ fan will no doubt appreciate. The podcast do an in depth analysis on PJ's career through their albums. Here's TEN: The Celebration Rock Podcast: How Pearl Jam Survived ‘Ten’ Best regards to all
  9. Thanks guys, HRT has the LineStreamer and is not too expensive. And Sony's Sound Forge I can get cheap enough I guess. Or I can just use Audacity. Any thoughts about the LineStreamer?
  10. Hello guys, Does anybody know of some digitizing services available in SoCal? I live in Irvine, but assume I have a better chance of finding good quality output in LA. I have some Vinyl and cassette only recordings that I would like to preserve. Just that I don't have enough to justify buying and learning software and a high end converter and all. Found one in San Diego but service was clearly amateurish and CD sounded awful. Didn't even know what I was talking about when looking into resolution options.
  11. Pearl Jam New York May 5th Maybe Pearl Jam again Ride Festival in July 9th Bob Dylan in Santa Barbara June 11th
  12. Update! While looking for good live music I think I stumbled upon a pattern, so here it goes: What do artists such as Bruce Springsteeen, Metalllica, Pearl Jam, Greatful Dead and others who release bootlegs have in common? VARYING SETLISTS! This past year I have seen acts like Tool, U2, Muse, Rolling Stones, Motley Crue, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, etc etc etc... And, with the exception of Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters, all have had virtually the same setlist throughout the tour. Maybe they spend much energy designing the show to specific songs that they leave little room for improvisation. Sure, as a Pearl Jam fan I can always expect songs like Alive and Evolution are most likely going to be played, but other than that their setlists are full of surprises.
  13. Yeah, it comes at the album's 10 year anniversary. Never get over how awesome Come Back and Comatose sound live.
