  1. My whole system is plugged into a PS Audio power regenerator, which I power off after a listening session. This makes it natural to turn off the Aries, along with everything else. That said, the regenerator can designate certain outlets as being "always on," and so I'll probably do that to keep the Aries running continuously.
  2. For me, the "ARIES STARTING..." message is unrelated to the firmware version, as I've had the issue with every firmware version ever used. I'll try futzing with my network settings, and if nothing resolves the issue, I may resort to leaving the Aries on 24/7.
  3. I'm having an issue where, around half the time I start up the Aries, it hangs indefinitely at the "ARIES STARTING..." message. When this happens, I can work around it by power cycling the PSU, and turning on the Aries once more. However, it is a bit of a nuisance... Has anyone else had this issue, and happened to find a fix?
  4. I'm having a good deal of difficulty playing DSD from foobar to my Aries, using UPnP. Currently, when I play a DSD file, according to the Lighting DS app, the Aries thinks it's seeing 44.1kHz, 24-bit audio. Relatedly, I also hear no sound when playing DSD files, though that's a bit beside the point. As long as I can get the Aries recognizing DSD input from foobar, I'll be happy with that progress Does anyone have a link to a guide, or instructions on how to get this working? I'll mention that I've found other, non-Aries-specific guides, and based on those, I've done the following: - Installed foo_input_sacd and foo_out_asio - In foobar, set the SACD output mode to DSD - Installed ASIOProxyInstall.exe - I have not installed an ASIO driver on my PC for the Aries, as I'm not sure if this is needed (or how to do it if it is) - In foobar, playback is set to UPnP Any thoughts?
  5. I'd heard that many deliveries of this DAC were delayed due to production issues. Interestingly, 2 units came up for sale on Audiogon this week, whereas up to now, they've been very thinly available in the used market. Does this mean shipments have caught up with demand, or is the BADA Reference still very much on back order?
  6. Apologies for the stream of consciousness here. I now realize that my option 3 will not work, as I actually need foobar itself, and not the NAS, to play the music files. This is because I have a bunch of weird formats (including video game music formats) that only foobar can convert into PCM. Minimserver wouldn't know what to do with these. So I guess my original question still stands. That is: how much would a long USB run cost me, in terms of sound quality?
  7. Actually, after doing some research, is it right that another option might be: 3. Connect the DAC to my NAS via USB, Install Minimserver on my NAS, and get a Foobar component (foo_upnp or foo_out_upnp) which can "tell" the NAS to stream music to the DAC. Does this sound right? If it does, I might try going this direction.
  8. I'm currently running a PS Audio PWD with Bridge, and I'm considering upgrading the DAC to another brand. With my new setup, I'll be looking to send audio from my laptop (Foobar) to the DAC. Specifically, I'd like to avoid using an iPad or other "remote control," as I really prefer the Foobar interface. In doing this, it sounds like there are two main options: 1. Connect the laptop directly to the DAC, with a long USB run (~4m). The DAC would have asynchronous USB. 2. Get a streamer like the Aries ($1500) I'll also add that the DAC will be physically close to my router and my NAS, though it sounds like neither of these can do what I'm looking for (I think). If these are my options, how much sound quality would I lose with a long USB run, versus a streamer and a shorter run? I'll admit that the prospect of getting a $200 USB cable sounds much better to me than a $1.5k streamer, though I'm not sure how much SQ I'd lose. Hopefully not enough to negate the benefit of the DAC upgrade altogether (!).
