  1. the ssd dock was plugged straight into the sms200ultra. the sound was as good as when the ssd was in my pc connected via ethernet. but then i do have the ethernet mod. only 2 comps. the pc is no longer in the loop. the files are on the ssd inside the chinese celeron running windows, and that feeds the ultra via ethernet. great sound. will try a linux distro on the celeron comp instead of windows. i am running the free Fideliser on the windows
  2. hi all - i've had my ultra for a couple of months. got it with the ethernet mod. had it connected up to the home network and getting files from my windows 10 pc. quite happy with the sound - previously i had a home built atom based, sotm usb card, singled sided ram etc. the ultra was a real step up. i tried a direct usb connection to an ssd in a powered dock as it seemed it would be easier but sq dropped. went to ali-express and got a little fanless celeron win 10 on msata mini comp for $125. loaded the ssd and pressed go. straight up a good step up again. lps's powering everything. spent the other evening doing comparisons with my $10000+ vinyl setup and was very impressed. different but equally enjoyable sound wise. an absence of clicks, pops etc puts it ahead atm. very happy indeed. got another msata on the way and will give roon rock a go and see how that sounds. maybe a linux server distro. no urgency as i'm very content.
  3. i'm another one who has tried Daphile and loved it for it's concept but used vortexbox because it had superior sound quality. i'm really unsure with linux and need my hand held so i thought i would give this a go. i'm also an aussie living in NZ so i got the humour straight away. very difficult to compare sound, but it is at least as good, or maybe a bit better(different in a good way for me?) than VB. i was early on in the beta testing and my hand got held and i was able to install and enjoy. yesterday i updated my firmware - again simple and easy once i had some simple instructions. i am really enjoying the experience so far. i decided i wanted to support this approach so i made a small donation as a form of encouragement.
  4. Not at all. Any help is appreciated. No, it's an atom based pc. The strange thing is it stayed operable when installed on the USB stick, but now it is on the HDD it doesn't. Not many bios settings but I will check them later.
  5. Thanks for that. I have not ticked that option re HDD. Mine is an SSD too.
  6. Recently I installed Daphile to disk after running it from a USB stick for a few months. There seems to have been a change. After standing idle for a day it does not respond to any input except from the shutdown button on the UI. Then I have to restart it and it works fine. I may as well just shut the comp down after each session. This did not occur with the USB based OS.
  7. hi dale - 7pro becomes 10pro. pro is the top of the 10 range. did one last weekend and one the weekend before. bit of a learning experience. i have fiddled around a bit with settings, especially the privacy related ones, but have been running the free version of fidelizer in extreme, and it works fine and sounds a bit better than my 7pro did. running daphile via usb and i prefer that. overcomes many of the privacy and security issues.
  8. I recently found on Aliexpress some "Dampener Balls" for use with aerial photography ans at 8 for $6 I thought they would be worth a try. They have arrived and the 1st thing I noticed was how soft and squishy they are. I think they are made from silicone, and their softness allows them to flex significantly in both horizontal and vertical planes. I have just placed 3 of them under my server but 1 was fully compressed so I added another one. I will leave them for a week and then take them out and see if I notice a difference.
  9. I find the 1st 2 tracks on santana's abraxas to be very revealing. the 1st one has those chime bar things that hand in a row and the tinkling quality they make doesn't take much to move from crystal clear to terrible. the congos also show how muddied the sound is. good bass in there too. on black magic woman - track 2, the vocals can be very ordinary or nondescript on ordinary equipment.
  10. I am curious as to whether there are any advantages to installing Daphile on a HDD compared with running from a USB stick. Any thoughts anyone?
  11. So after days of playing around I have finally succeeded, with the help of some Stereonet Australia members. I am sure I tried this before but who knows - it's working now! IP address of windows comp:/My Music with My Music being shared with Everyone
  12. I am still unable to access the music folder on my windows pc via the network connection. I have tried many many variations and combinations in the Remote Target box, but always get the failed symbol. I would love some help. Thanks.
  13. And in Christchurch this morning we had snow. Only a little, and then it got up to 5 degrees for an hour or 2. Last Tuesday it was 22. It's still winter here too. :-)
  14. I have tried a lot of different combinations. I've tried the name of the computer followed by the drive, followed by the folders. The comp is running Windows 7 Pro. I have put something like this in the Remote Target box - "John-PC:\D:\My Music" and in the Identification box - "flacs". I have tried with fwd slash and back slash and now I am so confused. I feel really thick. That failed symbol is still there. Can anyone help?
  15. Thankyou. That worked. Now I am having trouble configuring it to see the files on my pc. I have found the Network box on the settings page but not sure what goes where. Any suggestions appreciated as I have never been able to get to grips with Linux.
