  1. Hello there, I think you should certainly try various playback software products. There is a difference. I have a dedicated music server and use jplay for playback and it sounds great (harmonics etc., I listen a lot to string quartets). The nice thing about it is, that it - in hibernate mode - suspends most processes, services etc. just leaving the essentials necessary for playback. You don't have fool around with services using trial and error methods to get a lean system. After playback, all processes are there again. Naturally, your system is frozen during playback. The keyboard, mouse, display etc. are dead. That's the price you have to pay for great sound. If you're multitasking and listening to music while writing e-mails and surfing the net, then you'll have to use a second machine. Long story short, save time and effort and let others, perhaps more experienced take care of your computer's reources. Good luck!
  2. Hello There, my Sunfire HRS-10 consumes 30-35 watts in idle! That's way too much for me so I turn it off when not in use - which is a pain since the switch is on the back side. The LED power indicator is also on the back and sometimes I forget to turn the sub off so its idle the whole night (more of a pain). The manual says "600 watts average, at maximum continuous output, 18 to 100 Hz.". I listen to my music at moderate levels so I guess I'm not even using 20 watts of that. I agree with those claiming 2 subs are better than one. It's not about filling a room with enough sound but about having balanced sound. I only have one sub and it is on the right hand side of my listening room (not between the speakers). My Lyngdorf amp has it tuned in very well but I (think I) feel the sound pressure on the right side of my face so I believe having another sub on the other side of the room would even that out. I also listen to a lot of classical music and having a sub certainly enhances the performance.
  3. Hello There, what does that mean: "WASAPI - Event Style The output mode lets a sound device pull data from Media Center. This method is not supported by all hardware, but is recommended when supported." Does a Hiface converter "pull data"? The DAC behind the Hiface might pull but the Hiface?
  4. I think your just fine with the Bithead. Your problem seems to stem from badly recorded material so throwing hardware at the problem will just make it worse (a good dac would make a bad recording sound even bader). A software equalizer might let you shape the sound by attenuating or limiting problematic frequencies. You might also try editing your wave file with a tool like Audacity. I don't think you need any high-end hardware to make badly recorded speech files listenable.
  5. The input sensitivity of my Lyngdorf can be adjusted +/- 12dB in 0.1 dB steps. Is this the attenuation you folks are talking about to improve sound?<br /> Sorry, I'm a software guy not a hardware guy.
  6. Hello there,<br /> <br /> does anyone have experience with running the Hiface from a powered usb-hub? Theories about this? As I see it, power should not be a problem anymore and the device remains un-modded. I saw this site http://www.aqvox.de/usb-power_en.html and it appears interesting.<br /> <br /> I'm running a Squeezebox Duet into a Lyngdorf TDAI 2200 into Dynaudio Focus 140 speakers. The sound from my cd-player - Cambridge Audio Azur 640C (II) - seems fresher than the Duet and I'm hoping that a Hiface solution with my netbook (Win7) could sound better.<br /> <br /> Anyone?<br /> <br /> Juergen
  7. Hello there, have you tried using a different filter? I use the Min filter and find that there are subtle differences between each of the three. jerryt
  8. I'm using a wireless Squeezebox Duet running into a DacMagic and am enjoying the sound immensely.
  9. @vortecjr: I don't think you use two subs to maintain the l/r discrete channels. Bass frequencys have very long wavelengths and you can't determine from where the sound is coming from, it's just all-over. You can actually feed the sub a mono signal with both left and right channels since their separation is useless. Using 2 or more subs is done to combat room resonances and standing waves, placement of the subs being the key factor here. jerryt
  10. Copland DRC 205, a bit cheaper than the Lyngdorf but probably not as good.
