  1. Murfie.com has lots of good deals in all categories and you can get lossless FLAC downloads as well as cloud storage. Best bargains are in Classical but lots of choices at $3 or less in all genres. They will also list your CDs for sale or trade. It's my favorite download site by far.
  2. This link explains some dbPoweramp features for better rips, e.g. reading C2 pointers, drive offset, and accurate data re-reads. https://dbpoweramp.com/spoons-audio-guide-cd-ripping.htm As others have said: "Do it once. Do it well."
  3. Another vote for dbPoweramp and uncompressed FLAC. Ripping with dbPoweramp has the advantages of (1) calibrating your CD drive (2)comparing your rip to their database with Accurate Rip and (3) giving you excellent metadata, fields and editing options. dbPoweramp makes good use of multiple processors and can rip to multiple locations and formats to save you a step for backups. There are free options available that might be as good or nearly as good, but the cost compared to the value of the total CD library + playback equipment is a small fraction of a percent. I don't hear any differences between uncompressed FLAC and either WAV or AIFF. I definitely prefer uncompressed FLAC over any form of lossy compression on my main system but not so much in the car or with small desktop computer speakers.
  4. Have you mapped the diskstation music folder as a drive location on the asus? JRiver might not see it if it's only showing as a network location in File Explorer. On my Win 8.1 system file Explorer under This PC it shows as another drive .... Music(\\diskstation) (Z: ) JRiver sees this mapped drive but not any of my network locations Map Network Drive is an icon in the File Explorer ribbon.
  5. Blue Circle have a number of products designed to deal with #1,3 and 4. The FX2 with X0e module is a very effective power conditioner and I wouldn't be without it. I also have their DC blocker and the little surge protection devices. The DC blocker seems to be doing its job properly. I can't comment on the surge protection devices because I haven't needed them to come in to play so far-- and hopefully won't. All these Blue Circle units share two common traits-- very strange looking in their silicon-embedded pipes/plugs but also less cost than the ones in nice housings.
  6. You might try Black Viper settings. http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-8-1-service-configurations/ There is fairly good and clear documentation but it requires patience to evaluate and change each process setting. I have had good luck using this site, but I always take notes of any changes and create backups before making changes.
  7. I think there is an issue with JRemote on the iPad. I often get timeouts from iPad too. If I try to connect with iPod Touch using JRemote there is no problem. I can can also connect with TeamViewer from the iPad. I think this rules out possible problems with the router, the PC or its network card. My current theory is that it has something to do with RAM memory in the iPad. The problem seems to occur when memory is used up by other apps and doesnt seem to reallocate properly to JRemote. What I am testing now is to first close JREmote completely then clear iPad memory with the SYS-Activity app. When memory is cleared and JRemote is restarted it seems to connect.... But still testing.
  8. One other connection option might be to install a client bridge near your Aries. In my system, the main router is about 50feet away from my audio system. I took an old Linksys WRT-54G and installed the DD-WRT client bridge firmware. The Linksys communicates via wireless to the main router and via short ethernet to the NAS and the PC that is my dedicated media server. The media server PC and the NAS are connected to this bridge and this solved the problem of stringing long ethernet cables or resorting to powerline. The commands from the media server to the NAS does not have to go all the way back to the router, it simply locates the NAS on the adjacent bridge port by using its MAC address. The advantages to this setup are that I can still control the media server from my iPad and I can also access the NAS from my desktop computer. If you don't have an old router to press into service you may be able to find a cheap or a used one that is compatible with the DD-WRT firmware. DD-WRT has a good database of which models and versions are compatible www.dd-wrt.com | Unleash Your Router It's not rocket science to convert a router with firmware, but it does take patience and a degree of care for following the instructions. Tomato is another firmware that many have used successfully.
  9. Faro Annie is my favourite. I don't normally like "Best Of" albums but Best Of John Renbourn is very good and a worthwhile introduction. If you like White House Blues I think you would be happy with either. Renbourn has a very large discography so there are many excellent albums to explore.
  10. Very sad news. In more than 45 years I've never grown tired of listening to The Pentangle nor any of John Renbourn's albums since. He was a wonderful guitarist and interpreter of many styles. His early solo record Faro Annie has been on my "desert island list" for decades.
  11. Blue Jeans cable makes these, i paid about $15 for a short cable but you can specify the length you need. Excellent quality, good sound and cheap shipping cost too. I use one with Meridian Explorer in my little desktop computer rig and it's no worse than a much more expensive cable I tried. Check their web site for shipping info... They probably ship to your area. http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/audio/index.htm
  12. Synology.... Good product, intuitive GUI, but completely useless support. I won't buy one again.
  13. I haven't asked them this question. When I check a Murfie FLAC file in DbPoweramp it shows that the rip was done in DbPoweramp 14.2 and it gives the accurate rip confidence rating. Files are usually at Compression level 5. I have lots of storage and want to reduce CPU overhead so I convert to fully uncompressed FLAC. I haven't had any quality issues with their rips.
  14. I have this same Schubert Impromptu 90.3 piece performed by Ethella Chuprik with exactly 7:02. The album title is Schubert: Impromptus, Opp. 90 & posth. 142: Moments Musicaux Op. 94
  15. Yes, you purchase the CD that goes in your collection and you can stream it (mp3) anytime. You can request a download of the rip which means that it stays in your collection but you cannot resell it. Everything I've downloaded has been 16/44 FLAC which I assume is from a CD. I've never seen anything specially identified as a vinyl rip. Murfie does have a rip service for vinyl -- i.e. you can send them your vinyl and they will rip it for you but I'm not sure about the details of that. If you send them a message I'm sure you will get a reply within one business day.
