  1. I would still like to have a single box for storage+playback, so if there is some other hardware that suits better do let me know. One good thing with buying this board from voyage store was that it was up and running out of box. I did not have to do any config for USB audio etc. Any recommendation for a NAS that someone here has actually used, and fits my low heat, "small size that fits a drawer" requirement?
  2. Hi - I have got the alix board from http://store.voyage.hk/ Setup was simple except that my office has DHCP, so a a port scanner came in handy. However, it is currently useless for me and I am quite disappointed. I connected my blackberry as s usb drive, and HRT streamer. It read the files successfully. But playback skips badly, it even let out a big noise which almost deafened my ears. Is USB bandwidth an issue here? I wanted to attach a large usb hdd to the voyage put them and hrt streamer in a drawer, just take out power cord and stereo out and forget about them. However it doesn't seem possible now to play music at all from a usb hdd. Is NAS a solution? What would you recommend for a heat and low profile NAS, if USB hdd can not be used? regards Anant
  3. for audio application? This has a larger size and enclosure. But what about audio application?
  4. thanks Phil! I am planning to buy from voyage store. Their starter kit has 3d2 and 3c2. Which one is better for music playing app? I was thinking of local storage. Did anyone get lucky?
  5. has anyone tried HRT streamer II with alix board and voyage mpd? I am thinking of buying a starter kit from voyage store without the usb->spdif converter and use my hrt streamer instead. How to keep a local storage on this setup/ enclosure?
  6. had mounted the usb hdd as read only. Needed to run the command remountrw
  7. I just created a new vm using vmplayer. DVD ROM is the voyage mpd iso file. The OS booted fine. Now the real issues: 1. hrt streamer USB device is connected to the linux. VMplayer disconnects from host and connects to the VM. How to get audio out to it? 2. external usb hdd NTFS - also connected to host. How to access music stored on it?
  8. Sorry for being away for so long. I got a credit card (finally!), setup paypal and ordered one hrt streamer II. Hoping that win7 will work out for me. It doesn't really work out that well. I have setup foobar2000 (upgraded it to 1.1.5 today). Every now and then I hear a loud skipping like sound. It happens in almost every song. I checked the latency using http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml Every few seconds I can see red spikes, though most of the time it is in green. It is really sad that my laptop isn't working out as a good media source. What source do I use at work now! Should I setup a voyage mpd machine for office?
  9. Also - I figured out the noise is in the DAC. Will see if that can be fixed. Maybe next weekend. This weekend dedicated to wedding anniversary.
  10. Gb ethernet and wifi are important if I make a NAS as a NAS should then be a general purpose NAS than being just a music NAS. Also, is there a way to stuff a hard disk in the enclosure being sold on that site? Sorry but on the hardware front, I am a NoDIY. I agree any regular machine can be made a NAS and Alix may not be the right thing to look at for a NAS application.
  11. I was convinced that resampling to 48k is bad, given that there are so many efforts like asio etc. It must be bad. However, I just realized that I do not know the reason why 44.1 to 48 is that bad? Since 48 > 44.1 there should not be any loss in fidelity. All I can think of is that it might be a cpu intensive task and therefore general purpose OS like windows may not be able to do justice to this. So it may just be OS/ processor dependent thing? Or is 44.1->48 itself is a bad thing? I now have both old and new appletv. old one is set to make music, new one was just unpacked last night so still in the waiting. Something strange is happening with my speakers. I am not yet able to find out the reason. They keep making strange noises (like they do on when you turn a dusty vol pot) - but constantly, even when no part is moving. I am trying to debug it but get limited time with the setup.
  12. sorry for OT, but any suggestions for a DIY nas build? Alix board don't seem to have wifi or Gb ethernet.
  13. So all I need is: 1. board (2d2) 2. case 3. psu 4. compact flash card for storing os. 5. optionally for those who want a local disk - Pls suggest linear psu and batteries and where can I buy them BTW, board suggested by you do not have a vga? The one with vga is 3d3. Isn't a monitor required for installation/ troubleshooting? I am in India but I hope they will ship.
  14. got a little confused with so many boards. I don't know what to pick, and what all to pick from the alix site. Thanks.
  15. great reply. I am all for it if the store is local. You are right, I can rip on my work laptop and then upload it via NAS folder. Local spinning hdd shouldn't be a big problem? Maybe solid state hdd but it is going to be too expensive. Pls do some comparison of local/ NAS. What USB DAC are you using? PS: ayre qb-9 Is there a LIVE cd/ dvd or a live usb stick - that runs this linux OS without requiring to do the "installation" partitioning etc? PS Oh there is a live cd - I am going to try it sooner than I initially thought. I am right now working on a appletv based setup (almost done). Edit: wow, this Alix sounds interesting. I need to figure out a BoM for building a box that can do local disk as well as NAS. Looking for help.
