  1. The rega dac is settling in and singing beautifully. i also bought the musical fidelity v-link, a bargain hifi equipment for £99, (a hifi news review had not identified sonic differences with the v-link 192...so i thought eliminate option). the dac could only play at 44 max...but now lights up at 96. there is a bigger soundstage, playing CDs from my laptop is so pleasing, definitely better than my ripped tracks. yet i sold my cd player years ago grrr. i might have to re-rip some CDs. the current connections laptop usb>v-link ii coaxial>rega dac coaxial. i also bought a toslink, but it had one wrong end toslink to jack. now i hear glass is better than plastic etc, but at what cost, and benefit. perhaps the one most pleasing upgrade i have tried in years were the brightstar isonodes isolation rubber feet, the dac and the nac 82 seemed to open up. all subjective i know, but thats the world we inhabit ha ha. the vibration i used to feel on my preamp casings is gone, cant be a bad thing. still want to get the best out of this system, not there yet. seasoned tweakers out there...suggestions please, at no great cost. best
  2. Guys, i bought the DAC this morning. this territory is all new to me so i will try to explain things as simply as i can. please bear with me. i have my 2TB Netgear readynas duo connected to my network through a virgin media superhub (a very unreliable piece of **). i am using a sony viao laptop. when i ripped my music, i saved all files in Flac using dbpoweramp. but when i did the transfers yesterday from the previous HDD to the nas the files were all MP3, i dont know what went wrong. also many tracks had compression rates which i had not previously seen. happy to re-rip not a big problem or convert. what a nuisance, pehraps the nas duo did not recognise different codecs? my big issue is this. my current connections are as follows: my dac is connected to the naim nac 82. i also have the netgear ready nas connected to the virgin router (above) and the dac connected through a standard USB cable to my laptop. i can see the nas on my network and the files within. but i can not play the files wirelessly, is there a way out of this. i loathe to buy another piece of equipment (squeezbox etc right now). any advice. another point. i was disappointed that the front plastic fascia of the Dac felt so flimpy and loose, a sign of bad workmanship or inconsistent manufacturing, not good at all. my idea is to extract the best sound quality that i can from the DAc and my music files. so any suggestions will now make sense as i have everything in place. i did try a different power lead fater using an IEC converter (?), not much of a difference really, those filters on the DAc did not make a difference to me either. best wishes, will
  3. The biggest mistake was getting involved in hifi. well, i blame my uncle for introducing me to naim for starters. i had baked beans and dodgey food in my student days saving for my first serious hifi. i was 'happy' with my old marantz and kef speakers :-) Seriously, i am hoping to avoid mishaps. so far i have only ripped my CDs, took me months to do. the mistake there was i converted some mp3 to Flac and i know that was a mistake but i had good reasons. now i have bought the Netgear NAS i must make sure i transfer all my music etc onto it. then i will get the DAc in weeks and try the connections. then the tinkering starts :-) I had a son four years ago and he took priority, now he has a life of his own, so i thought i might as well not stop my life for his and refresh my music a bit (cartoons had taken over until i threw a hiss recently, damn!) the sqquezebox are there any good reads, advice etc, it seems like an interesting little gadget. Happy to be guided away from pitfalls.
  4. My last response was incorrect. what i saw was the sonos. but i have since looked up the squeezebox on the internet and it looks funcky. and i take it the Touch is the one to go for. thank you again for your guidance, i would have made serious and emotionaly taxing mistakes.
  5. Excellent. I am getting to understand things better now, thank you very much for the simple explanations guys. i am aware of the limitations of mp3 to flac conversion. i have about 10 rare recordings from a long deceased friend with some great congolese music. i can not get it anywhere else. i should just have ripped it in mp3. the conversion is not too bad either. i liken it to retaining an old scratched LP but with great memories. david/julf-yes all my music will be on the NAS. it appears i can not get away from the sqeezebox :-) intrigued, i visited richer sounds recently and was advised the set has three units i think, that put me off. i admit i dont know enough, havent upgraded my system in many years. being a tight git, i was also hoping not to buy one, trying to save the pennies by using the laptop or my smartphone (if they work for that type of thing). but for what it does and your solid advice, i will look into getting the squeeze. thanks again guys, still confused but this is an interesting area and your insights are so helpful and slowly its all getting into my head slowly :-) i will ask more thick questions when i get the Dac
  6. Thanks Julf for all your help. you have the technical know how to understand the manuals, i need to read up and see how much i understand. i have read elsewhere rega themselves admit the usb connection provides the least satisfactory output. another point if you can, other than a squeezebox, is there a way of wirelessly/remotely playing the music from the netgear. are there phone apps etc so that i do not have to put my laptop on the hifi rack, would be great if i can surf etc while music plays. thank you very much for taking your valuable time to get back to me, greatly appreciated. best wishes, will
  7. Thanks guys for your speedy responses. i would have been very annoyed with everything in place but not being able to play the DAC, thanks for pointing that out Julf. I intend to keep costs to a minimum so will stick with the laptop. Its a brand new sony viao using windows 7 premium i think. happy to keep it on all the time, allows me to see whats playing. when funds allow, i could always change to the other options suggested. in terms of ripping software, i tried NCH and dbpoweramp, both recommended by a well respected uk hifi manufacturer. NCH was free but also limited. although a free version was available, i paid for dbp. I did use both in tandem to test them out and i think both systems did the original CDs justice. i am not very techy but rely on my ears. all things put together i preferred dbp, it also allows for converting large files from mp3 to flac or vs etc. without getting into the merits or otherwise of mp3 vs flac, 99.9% of what i have is in flac, with a few rare but magical files in mp3 (similar to an scratchy record). as i grow older, i now realise that i prefer satisfaction to perfection :-) (aka a sure way of suppressing upgraditis in a recession) Julf, you seem to know a bit about the netgear NAS. do you think i need a USB converter then, to ensure i get the best out of the DAC. Thanks again guys, i really appreciate your help. best wishes,
  8. Dear All, This is my first shot at computer audio. my current system: naim nac 82>hicap>135s>intros. i spent the past few months ripping (mainly in Flac) my CDs using dbpoweramp onto a number of laptops around the house. I have just purchased a Netgear RND2000. I am going to get the Rega Dac in weeks. How do I connect it to the netgear. i would like to extract all the music there is from the NAS to the DAC. please forgive my ignorance as i dont have a strong IT background, i intend to use the laptop as an interface and understand thats possible. i am currently experimenting with the XBMC desktop and so far ok. my problem is, the netgear's connections are all USB and i understand the rega is not strong on this. so i assume i have to get a usb converter. i am aware of the hiface, and the halide (sp) reviewed here. i am uk based so i hope any recommendations are within reach. but many thanks in advance. will
