  1. Don't limit your thinking to the signal path. Everything electrically connected to Aries can affect SQ. That includes having a wired router while playing music from USB or having a thumb drive connected while playing via network. Forget the theory and test in your own system but; e.g.: When testing wireless, remove ethernet cable (even restart Aries to be sure its LAN port is turned off). When testing USB drive, try it with both wired and wifi network.
  2. Hi Alex. Yes, the SSD (Cricial 250GB) was powered only by the sMS-200 and the DAC (Mola Mola Makua) was attached directly to the sMS-200 and drawing current from it (at least for the handshake). I was playing DSD64 files and it sounded very good . Great value combo. It was only a short test before returning to my main rig where I am using LPS-1s to power various combos of SOtM PCIe card, SOtM clock module and SSD. With that server, which is already highly optimised, I've done extensive listening tests with the LPS-1. WOW! Congratulations Alex. Particularly with the SOtM PCIe, the drop in noise floor provided by the LPS-1 is very obvious. Cheers, John
  3. Yes, the LPS-1 can power a SOtM sMS-200. More specifically; yesterday I powered up a SOtM sMS-200 via a LPS-1 and played music via network; no issues. I then plugged a SSD into the sMS-200; no issues. LPS-1 kept powering it. I did not bother trying to play music via the SSD, just via network. Cheers, John (copied my own post from another thread in case some here are also wondering)

  5. "S tones" = Sibilance? I didn't listen for that but I agree about system dependent.
  6. I agree with smoother and more natural. Timbre is improved; the decay of instruments sounds more natural. This comes from improved overall resolution and a lower noise floor. Bass is also tighter/faster and extends a bit deeper. YMMV.
  7. FW4.0Beta3 sounds better IMO. Yes, Memory Cache is permanently on. I was confused, thinking that the new Buffering status function on iPhone app should show me the progress of buffering during normal playback. This is not the case. Auralic explained: "No, it is another thing, when you experience a network connection interrupt, the place where display sampling rate will switch to 'Buffering...' to tell you the playback pause is due to buffering status"
  8. I'm using Snakeoil. SQ is fantastic and with it I can easily compare different players and kernels; all from my listening position using only my web browser. Amazingly simple to use...I have zero knowledge of Linux and would qualify as computer illiterate on this forum so don't be scared to give it a try. Yes it's only beta at the moment; worked straight up on my (Atom) server. OP clearly wants to hear of and fix any issues with other server types. You can run it from a USB flash drive to try out before installing on your SSD/HDD.
  9. After trying various set-ups for connecting music SSD, I ended up putting an external SOtM USB hub between Aries and SSD with Curious USB cables on both sides of the hub. I also put a SOtM SATA II filter between the SSD and SATA-USB converter. Each of these changes improved SQ in my system. Using the powered hub was another way to save the Aries from providing power to SSD. That may explain part of the benefit. For people using a generic USB cable to connect their hard drive, I'd recommend trying a better cable. YMMV but I was surprised how much difference it made in my system.
  10. Thanks very much for posting that. I look forward to part 2. I've improved SQ by using better PSUs and I'm currently trialling Uptone Regen and SOtM USB-hubEX. Not sure on them yet and always hoping for new ideas to try.
  11. Well there is a tweeter upgrade kit for your ATC speakers that will be available in a couple of months ;-)
  12. I haven't experienced that but you could try pressing and holding the power button. That is the other way to turn off the Aries (rather than power-OK).
  13. I really hope this is usable for the SOtM PCIe USB card but the specs say this card (and the SOtM hubs) require 6.5-9V at 2A. Does this mean we rule out using the new (1A) PS with SOtM cards?
