  1. Caught your cow ass on the bridge. Moo! Beware of trolls, for when you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss gazes into you.
  2. Actually no, you are just cattle. Mooo.
  3. Hey, I have come to the opinion that R.E. Shaman likes Amarra. What do you think? Can you spell shill or is that beyond your vocabulary?
  4. It is great that we have a choice! My personal best with my system has been with PM. That is not to say that I have not bounced back and forth with Amarra. I think the problem has been the moving target that changing versions of OSX and iTunes presents to software developers. I have owned Apple since the AppleII and it is, IMHO, the best machine and software platform in the world, but it is clearly their intent to control all content and acquisition of that content. (Man, I can already hear my children screaming, " Why the hell didn't you buy Apple stock when it was cheap?") My current plan is to stop with the constant "upgrades" and stay with what pleases my ear until Rob tells me otherwise.
  5. I have personally benefited from Mr. Diament's posts in several on-line forums, including SHTV. Never, if I recall correctly, has he ever been a shill for any corporate interest.
  6. If you insist on quoting me, please enter the entire statement, if you please. Of course there are rules here too, YI. The fact is that we are not limited to comments that are not provocative. Sometime the truth is provocative. My statement in no way condemns Mr. Hoffman and his work. In general, I will buy any remaster by him with the expectation of improving on the original. My goodness, YES.
  7. Having had posts torched more than once on the SHTV, it is refreshing to see some lively discussion here without interference. One point that is made over and over again over there that is probably true is that whether it is 16/44.1 or 24/192, nothing can fix a bad recording or a bad mastering. For example, as far as I know there are no good versions of the Tull song Aqualung, just variations on bad, and I have most every one of them, digital and analog. With that in mind and the fact that as listeners we may not want a truly flat recording, sometimes the discussion about the quality of these downloads becomes less than objective. I have download some truly reference quality stuff from HDTracks and will continue. I am glad someone is doing it. The Chesky in-house stuff is awesome. I just bought The Yes Album, unfortunately without the CA discount. Should have come here first.
  8. DMG build 4420 found in the trash and put back. Very nice. Should be present on the download site with with OS recommended and bug fixes specified. This was and is my only point. Tenure is not determined by number of solicitous posts.
  9. shaman - a person as having access to otherworldly spirits or special knowledge. You are right, proxy is not accurate. Shill is a better word.
  10. Thank you Shikasta. My point is that Amarra version 2.4.2 was the best and for my system the most stable of all previous versions. I liked it. The latest version changed all that and is sonically degraded. I fully understand that with all the versions of OSX, iTunes, and other software involved (DAC8) that any particular version or "upgrade" may have unintended consequences with any individual system. Fix on hole and another is opened. Because Amarra had such a hard time transitioning to Lion, once I got to a version of Amarra that worked for me, I decided not to upgrade my OS to Mountain Lion - safe bet, I thought. If I understand that Amarra may perform differently with different systems, so does Sonic Studio. Yes? My problem is that version 2.4.2 is not available at the download website. I do not want 2.4.1 or 2.4.0. How is that unreasonable given its well known history? How is it unreasonable to be able to directly communicate promptly with Sonic Studio for technical issues? This forum has proven the best avenue to communicate with Sonic Studio. As a paying customer I have a problem going through a proxy placed in this forum rather than one that is official, prompt, and direct. I am not here to promote any player. I have two (well three but I am not counting native iTunes).
  11. I wasn't kidding about this, I want to go back to 2.4.2. Where is it? For whatever reason, and I am still using Lion, I lost all the sonic quality I had with 2.4.2 which corrected the minor bug I was having in playlist mode with 2.4 with failure to show the proper album cover. I do not care about those minor details and did not think it necessary to complain; I care a whole lot about sound quality which is now worse than a badly mastered mpeg and I have a better than average system. Guys, I AM YOUR TARGET MARKET, and I am very frustrated with your product with its BS upgrades and your arrogant lack of customer service when your technical staff can't quite get it right after so many many attempts. I want to step back to the next earliest version but the Amarra web site does not give that option.. For a program as buggy as Amarra has been since its inception, this should be a given. Online customer service is non-existent without a fee, as though that will ever happen. Sonic Studio has an endemic problem.
  12. For audio one does not need a speedy transfer. It is generally recommended that if you use an external HD that you use a different bus for output. I input with firewire and output to DAC with USB. Speed is not the issue. RAM can be. I am a believer is source first, a Linny (good in, good out), so I would begin by using source material at least redbook or higher in bit depth and sampling, assuming it is well mastered to begin with, and purchase or acquire the best player (actually iTunes is not bad) you can afford then the best DAC. There are many fine USB DAC's and the differences in price range may only become apparent depending on the transducer. As for speakers, search Barry Diament on this site or SteveHoffman.tv. The best no cost upgrade for me was with proper speaker placement based on room dimensions and acoustics. Mr. Diament has an entire web page about this that is very helpful. (Many other informative articles as well) Setting up your monitoring environment here is another: hifi on TNT-Audio - Internet HiFi magazine Another thing to consider, and I am admittedly putting in some personal opinion here, is that great, and I really mean GREAT, headphone systems are available these days at a fraction of the cost of even a mid-fi room system. I have a decent room system that I am very satisfied with but spend much more ear time with my headphones.
  13. There are probably many options. This is what worked best for me. Cost no obstacle. For most people with a Mac, the bottleneck will be the DAC. XLD software to rip CD and convert to AIFF so that I can put it in a format that my iPod/Pad will play. (I use Wave Editor to change bit depth before changing sample rates and it has the best dither algorithm I have used) If native FLAC, then I play it that way through my room system, with either Pure Music or Amarra. Personally I would recommend Pure Music in its current version. It is not only affordable but IMHO, the best. Amarra varies depending on what your operating system is and what version you are using. Good luck.
  14. Very pleased with PM 1.88a! So much so that I will be hesitant to upgrade to future releases. Full midrange with an open soundstage. Transient clarity without brightness. PM has managed to maintain a musical presentation as technical issues have been addressed. Nice job! Thank you.
