  1. Tested speakers before buying them. Listened with different types of uncompressed files: WAV, FLAC, AIFF. I did not hear any blown-out tinny sound. To be more specific about what i'm hearing. . .when a cheap set of speakers has the volume too high and distortion occurs - like a static. That's what's happening except it seems like it's just with the mid-range and at low and high volume. The vocals are particularly subject to the problem.
  2. Just setting up my system. Discovering that some of my AIFF rips sound tinny. Not all of them. I haven't found a pattern yet. Almost seems like the lower quality(AAC, MPEG) rips sound better. Totally confused. Is it the system synergy? Maybe the muiltibit DAC or one of the other components. Maybe a setting within Audirvana? Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks
  3. Whoa. . .the two previous posts from Bogi and Jay-Dub are a lot for me to absorb as a green horn. Thank you for sharing the insight though . It's starting to sink in. For me it's dealing with the rift between Concept and Theory ----> system synergy or real world application.
  4. BITS - this is another dynamic of DAC's i'm not fully comprehending outside the fact that more bits is better sound. Here's what's confusing: the TEAC UD 301 advertises 24bit/192kHz PCM file playback. The MOMB does not give specs on bit playback . I can only assume whatever it is is better than 24/19. Yet JayDub, says the "main limitation is the 16-bit nature of the DAC." So now i'm totally confused. Will someone please explain? Thanks
  5. Jay-Dub, now that i'm getting a better understanding of DAC's, what you're saying makes a good bit of sense. There are a couple things that i'm not following though. You suggest that the MOMB's strength is "when software upsampling is not practical". What is software upsampling? Also what is a DS DAC?
  6. OK. . .i gotta a framework on how to approach this project. Sure got expensive fast:Schiit Modi Multi=$250, Schiit SYS=$50, Singxer = $205, IFI SPDIF=$150, Misc. cables and S/H=$50 . . .Grand Total of $700. Is this still the best route to go for playing my digital files or is there a cheaper approach that will achieve similar results with my current system? Or maybe someone has a line on where to find the individual components i listed for cheaper than what i've found? Thanks again for ALL the insight
  7. Didn't know it was passive. Admittedly, i don't really know what that means. . .guessing it's not adding wattage?
  8. ST-70 is totally stock I do not have a preamp. Is the Schiit SYS appropriate or is there something better out there for volume control? Alright, y'all are leaving me in the dust now. . ."Doing USB out to a Singxer F-1, then coax S/PDIF (RCA connector) into an iFi SPDIF iPurifier connected to the Modi Multibit's S/PDIF input." All these things are totally foreign. Mind showing pic of what this setup looks like ? singer f-1? I looked it up. Guessing get it w the housing? thanks
  9. Thanks for the insight Bogi BobSherman. . .aw man, throwing a wrench in the works Speakers: Angstrom Image
  10. Thanks for the recommendation. I guess it suggests that the teac is better than both of those?
  11. New to the game so bear with me. . .I'm budgeted at $300-400 and looking for a DAC. Researching my options I've come up with the Schiit Modi 2 (multibit) and their SYS preamp AND the Audio GD NFB 11. Are they comparable? Are there other DAC's that fit my budget and are better? System: dynaco ST-70 R. Gray power conditioner CD's ripped AIFF Mac Itunes
  12. GNAN: I have a choice between Linux & Windows. Guessing I wanna use Linux? Is there a preferred music player program w Linux? DAVE : ok, understand. Wow, that's a revelation for me. Seems like it opens up lots of doors to device connectivity and communication. Will you recommend a wifi router? Thanks for continued feedback. It's all beginning to sink in and make sense!
  13. Here's what i'm going to try: -intel nuc celeron -liliput 7" lcd monitor -favi wireless keyboard I've got a separate macbook. Hoping i can download needed drivers and players with it. Any insight on that? Thinking there might be problems b/tw intel(which i believe in pc/windows) and my mac. There's also dynamics of coupling the lcd monitor with the NUC. Thinking i'll need an adapter plug to use the hdmi port with the usb powered monitor? Insight on that will be appreciated too. Thanks
  14. I've got an android phone with 4G LTE. Thanks, I'll look into the other devices you suggested.
  15. Hmmm? Well, I'm not paying $45/month for wifi ( my cheapest option in New Orleans). Surely there's another way to have a music server. With that said, the consensus thus far is the upfront cost may be higher if i don't have wifi. I looked into the joggler and the tiny server. Not finding any "deals" here in the States. . .even used i'm looking at about $600. I can get a used mac laptop for $350ish. This thread was inspired by possibility of discovering a music server for under $200. Am I misinformed ? I appreciate all the feedback and will continue to research.
