  1. Hi I'm sure this is the right place to get some help on basic networking for music :) I have 2 computers: 1) My personal Desktop Computer: Linux Mint 18.3 KDE Edition connected to router via Ethernet running 24/7. All my music is on an internal hdd here. 2) Laptop I received from work: Macbook Pro 2020 running Monterey 12.1 connected via Wifi All of my work-work is done on the Macbook and I'd love to browse & listen to my local music collection from the Mac, using a Dac/Amp (RU6) while keeping it bitperfect I tried to just right-click the music folder and to share it, which is supposed to enable samba, but couldn't connect to it from the mac from finder -> connect to server -> smb://IP or smb://IP/FolderName I'm very new to streaming and don't understand the difference between DLNA UPNP or SMB. All I want is being able to play my files from the mac. I'd love to get easy recommendations on how to enable this and what software is recommended Thanks
  2. Hello the title sais it all, has anyone positive experience with a cheap chinese lPS and which one? Thanks
  3. Hello Folks I'm about to build a computer, that will be my main PC and HTPC (until I build a lower power HTPC fully passive ... ) I will buy a SoTM USB card, Uptown Audio Regen is already ordered, and my LH Labs Pulse Sfi is already here. Now I did read a lot about people using LPS for their gear: DAC, Regen, SoTM usb card, PC... Now I need to understand something, isn't the Power already linear? Isn't a normal ATX PSU for example already transforming AC to DC? Or the DACs supplied Power Supply, isn't it transforming already AC to DC? Whats the thing with the 'special' LPS? How could I theoretically power all these devices with a LPS? Since they all need different V and A? Thanks
  4. Hi and thanks for the replies. did anyone actually tested, if the absence of the fan reduced the noise in the sound path? I mean, someone that had a system with a fan and had some moise issues, and then changed the same system to be fanless, only passive cooling. How exactly does a Fan at all produces RF?? That sounds very strange to me. On of the reasons for me to use a case like the Streacom FC10 is it's height, not the absence of fan noise (or rf noise). Using a small tower in order to get an ATX size mobo inside is not optimal in my case ( from a optical point of view, my wife wouldnt like that in our living room lol). @firedog Dust and dirt is certainly an issue, and my server will be around 2m away from me. Not sure what to do, going the passive way, or the silent way. @Pepsican I dont think that going fanless is the cheaper way, since I need a special case for this. It not cheap from the begin with, and I would need to order it. Its heavy and shipping will get expensive, no?
  5. Hello CA community I'm craving already some time to build a CAPS like Computer, a silent PC with no moving parts, no fans, no vibrations. It appealed to me to be what should be best for music listening and maybe also for Movie watching. I bought now some hardware pieces (i7 4790k, asus z97-a and a 500gb Samsung ssd), and was looking for a case suited for my needs. I read a lot about fan-less designs and silent PCs, be it here, on silentpcreview or on tomshardware. Maybe I haven't understood completely why the CAPS Server should be that silent and with no moving parts, but if it's for the absence of fan noise only, then this might be (at least in my case) unnecessary. Let me explain: I live in a relative hot country (Israel), where the A/C has to be on during June to October. The other months I only open the window (kind of noisy outside), and if not I also turn the A/C on. The "winter" here is very short, Dec-Mar. So if I would use, let's say the Streacom FC10 Case, I would need the turn the A/C on in order to have a cool rem temp and to have air moving around the case. The A/C is surely much more noisy then a PSU and CPU fan together. To quote silentpcreview: "a small amount of forced airflow from a good quality fan is essentially inaudible in almost all environments, and its cooling superiority with a good heat-sink easily beats even the massive TNN 500. There are also many components other than the CPU or GPU, such as the VRMs on the motherboard, which are best with some airflow for cooling under load." I was very close to order the FC10 before I was thinking about all this. Is this really necessary? I mean, I even don't live in such a super quiet environment. What other reasons besides the absence of noise are there for the CAPS requirements? Does the presence of a CPU fan and the fact that it's moving somehow affect the sound? Let's assume I won't use an optical drive and will only use a SSD, won't a silent CPU cooling and a silent PSU that still have fans alter something? Thanks
  6. Very interesting. I want to build something similar, have a asus x97a atx mainboard, intel i7 4790k and the 500gb samsung ssd, very close to your build. still unsure on the case, since i live in a hot country and maybe a bigger case would be abetter idea
  7. Is this only relevant when the music is played from the SSD, or also in general?
  8. Since the speakers are meant to be used also for the TV (Set-Top Box (over SPDIF) and Udoo Mini Computer/Music and Movie Server (over USB) to DAC to amp to speakers) they need to face the same direction as the TV. I guess I could place bookshelfs simply on stands, but the different distance the two speakers will have to the wall worries me. Should this be an issue? besides from looking akward..
  9. Hello, I just moved to a new apartment and have a problem. I'm about to buy speakers and an amp, but I'm not sure how to place the speakers. The rig will be under the TV, but because this unsymmetrical built, I'm not sure how to put the speakers. If floor-standing speakers, the left one will have more room to the back wall the the right one. If bookshelf speakers, would it be too high to place them on this shelf above the TV? Will the fact, that on the right there's a column and on the left there isn't be a problem? How far should the speakers be from each other? The top shelf has a bit less then 180cm... Thanks for the help
