  1. You might consider Bluesound or Heos wireless speakers. Both have Tidal, and quite good sound. Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile
  2. I'm not using my sMS100 at the moment, but when I did, it was always with iPeng, and with no problems. LMS also runs a DLNA server so that is probably what Kinsky is seeing. As firedog suggests, check your LMS settings carefully. Also have a close look at iPeng settings -- I found that if I had more than one LMS-based player on the network, it could be slightly difficult to see / change which player was being used.
  3. Hello Boris (paul_cz), I was in a similar situation when I installed my sMS-100 -- replacing a SBT. I had them both running for a while. You haven't mentioned the software configuration you have for playing through the sMS-100. I'll mention one problem that I had that may help you work out what's going on. I started with sMS s/w v1.2, and found it pretty easy to configure it as a player for LMS running on my audio computer (MBP). But things went awry with my control app iPeng, when I updated to v1.3. I was having trouble associating the sMS squeezelite player with my usual LMS server. After some investigation, and advice from Jesus R, I realized that v1.3 introduced LMS as a server, and that this server was running by default. To disable this LMS (which I didn't want -- I want the sMS-100 as a player only) it's necessary to delete the LMSserver app (this moves it the disabled apps section -- it can be re-installed from there if needed). This brought things back to normal. Of course this may not be your problem, but it does make the point that there are both software and hardware aspects to introducing a new device, and that you may find your answer by looking at your s/w configuration. You can check functionality via the other apps, for example if you have an airplay device (iPhone etc). Or the DLNA app will often pick up a running LMS (which usually have DLNA plugin) as a DLNA server.
  4. Interesting discussion re transformers ... Just looking at the DAC in question -- is it really a significant saving to bring one from Japan to Aus? Audiotrends in Melbourne have a DA-06 for $A4500 inc postage. From Japan is $A3400 + about $200 postage + GST on the total (ie about $A350) + import/clearance fees (unknown) + transformer. That's already over $4.1K and could be more ...
  5. I'm now using mine with ethernet-over-power, but at first I had it setup from an access point (configured to extend the home network ie the sMS-100 was able to get its address from the DHCP server on my ADSL modem/router). In my case it worked, but it is of course dependent on wireless network performance.
  6. Superdad wrote (post #45): "the only thing I really want to know is if--with the ground switch in "lift" position--there is or is not continuity between the shell of the USB "A" plug at the computer and the USB "B" plug at the DAC." With a DMM measuring R I get continuity with switch up and switch down. And no perceptible difference in sound (SoTM sMS-100 to Metrum Octave).
  7. You're right, it's not in the manual -- must have come in at v1.3. Setup was easy -- HQPLayer appears in the list of available apps, so install it from there, then go the app switcher and activate it. I've ony used it once, with HQPLayer running on another machine (not the MBP I use for music). It found the NAA over the wireless network, and connected immediately. Not running DSD at the moment. I have a Loki sitting on a shelf awaiting its moment in the sun, but lots of other things to sort out first ...
  8. OK, I'll get back on it when I can come up with something I have some confidence in. At the moment my CAPS build is very much Stage0 -- headless motherboard with Daphile on a USB stick. To install the NAA I have to get it back to a monitor, install and test the SSD (+ SATA filter) I have for it, then install a Linux followed by the NAA package. The NAA comes as a Debian .deb archive, but I want to try it using Arch or if possible its variant AudiophileLinux -- hopefully it will cooperate. Anyway it might take a while as work is getting annoyingly hectic again ...
  9. That's reasonable, as a comfortable starting point, Airplay is good, and I appreciate its presence in the sMS-100 on occasions when I want to use iOS apps. I find the cost effectiveness / value for money of the sMS-100 to be seriously impressive. I bought it as an interim measure and to compare it with other approaches. I have compared it directly against a 2010 MBP running Amarra and found it much better (however I hadn't optimized the OS as much as I could have so will return to that test again at some point). Yes it would be very interesting to see a comparison against a modded Mac Mini. I thought about modifying a Mac Mini but have decided to build a CAPS Carbon instead. One thing I want to do (as an experiment) is set that up as a NAA (network audio adapter) for HQPlayer running on my MBP. Then I can compare it with the NAA already present in the sMS-100. Hopefully this will give some insight into how the sMS-100 architecture compares.
  10. You don't need a Squeezebox to run LMS -- it's very good multi-platform freely available music server (Linux, OSX, Windows ...). SqueezePlay is software that behaves like a Squeezebox -- I run it sometimes on my Mac for convenience. If you want to play high resolution files, I'd suggest being careful about basing your playback system on Airplay. It's Apple, and they generally don't do high res very well. Also, it's often difficult to find out just what is supported. I believe the best you will get is 48khz -- based on information at these links: https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/AudioVideo/Conceptual/AirPlayGuide/PreparingYourMediaforAirPlay/PreparingYourMediaforAirPlay.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40011045-CH4-SW1 which links to https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/NetworkingInternet/Conceptual/StreamingMediaGuide/FrequentlyAskedQuestions/FrequentlyAskedQuestions.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40008332-CH103-SW1 and also How Apple’s AirPlay Streams Audio | Kirkville Jesus would probably know ....
  11. I had tried Airplay previously just to see how it worked -- quite well, I could play from various iPad apps to the sMS-100 without a problem. I haven't used it much as I'm happy with Squeezelite. Out of curiosity, I downloaded Airfoil and tried it. I set it up on a Mac separate from my music server, and used it to stream to Airplay on the sMS-100. My Amarra trial has expired, so I used Squeezeplay served from LMS on my music server. It worked, but there was occasionally a bit of lag, particularly at startup, and occasionally on pause etc. I then played the same tracks through the sMS-100 using Squeezelite as usual. The sound quality was much better -- through Airplay there was an unpleasant harshness to the sound. Of course you may find differently but I would do some testing before using this approach.
  12. Your problem is clearly LMS-specific so you may get more responses on the slimdevices forum. Nonetheless, I've had LMS running on three Macs (two OS X, one Linux) and not had a problem with either connectivity or library. So I suspect your problem may be with either your disc or size of library, perhaps some files or filenames in the library are causing problems. I suggest that you set up a small test library, first of all on your internal disc, and get LMS running with that. Install it, start the server from system preferences, connect using "http://localhost:9000" and scan you small library. When that works, try a small library on your external disc. If all is still ok, try the full library but let the scan run overnight . If that fails, look at the scan logs ("information" tab on "settings" page) to try to see where in the library things are going wrong ... If it's easier, you can do all this on the Mac by installing LMS 7.8.1 and the Mac program SqueezePlay.
  13. I currently have them set at 10000 and 2500, but as yet I have no convincing rationale for these numbers (still working on that). Other combinations work as well. I just re-tested with first the default settings and then the numbers above -- the crackling noises are present at default settings, absent when changed. However I was getting this behaviour for all playback, including FLAC files. If it's just internet radio, the problem may lie in networking to the device??
  14. Hello Holberg, Good to see your problem was fixed! Re the glitches. I have a similar setup (LMS on a Macbook Pro, Squeezelite on the sMS-100). At first I had continuous crackling-type noises. I resolved this by changing the parameters under squeezelite settings -- buffer size and period count. Before doing that, I verified that the sMS-100 hardware wasn't the problem by using the DLNA app on the sMS-100 -- I installed minimserver on the MBP, then used the sMS-100 to play from it -- there was no noise. So I focussed my attention on the software -- as above. Might be worth a try before sending it back ...
