  1. It would be good to get an indication as to how far away one needs to be to not hear the "leaked sound" from SR1a played at normal listening levels. (I am considering these for late night lightening when cranking up the speakers will disturb the family. The plan is to set-up in a separate room, with a closed door, which would be several metres from the nearest bedroom.)
  2. Mitchco Are you suggesting that the Kii 3 run full range with the subs augmenting these main speakers; I.e., no high pass on the Kii 3? And, if so, then would this recommendation hold true if the setup had a multichannel soundcard from the PC thus allowing AL or Acourate managed low / high pass to subs / Kii?
  3. Isn't it still possible to use DSP within the source to deal with overall room correction (in the event that on-board correction isn't good enough)?
  4. How are the investigations of other options proceeding?
  5. Thierry Is there a recommendation as to good in ear binaural microphones to use for the actual HRTF measurements? APS

    HQ Player

Thanks.\ @Miska. Will the output of HQPlayer be in DSD or PCM format (for PCM files)? (I'm thinking that it'd be good to get to DSD512 based on the feedback of the performance of the Holo Springs DAC). Or put differently: what is the chain in terms of up-sampling / convolution / conversion?

    HQ Player

I’m running a dedicated PC / Roon to Stinger SU-1 (I2S) to Holo Springs Level 3 (NOS) with the set-up using convolution filters (PCM) created in Acourate to deal with room equalisation. The Roon DSP engine involves the following sequence: Bit Depth Conversion – Sample Rate Conversion – Convolution – Bit Depth Conversion – Output. The computer based up-sampling is to 352.8 or 384kHz with convolution applied at these rates. All this is working well. I’m wondering, though, if there is benefit in moving to HQ Player given the reports of good success with DSD512 with the Holo Springs DAC. It'd be good to know @Miska though how the convolution filters / up-sampling would work. Is it a case that I’d be able to use my existing (PCM) filters with conversion to DSD occurring after convolution? And, if this is the case, then would it be advisable to run 44kHz or 48kHz filters or do up-sampling to higher PCM rates before convolution?
  8. I’m enthusiastic about the emergence of active speakers with digital inputs as a small form factor (low box count) solution for shared rooms. Some of these speakers have their own “controllers” (e.g., Kii Three / Controller) but there does appear to be a lack of digital pre-amp / processor options. I’m thinking here of a remote controlled unit that a) allows switching between multiple digital inputs, b) outputs a digital signal in different formats (AES, Coax, Toslink ) and c) transparent digital volume control. Pro-audio interfaces offer some or all of these functions but I’ve not found any that are remote controlled. Has anyone found such a tool designed for the consumer market?
  9. Interesting. I wonder if the usual Streamcom cooling block for AMD AM1 processors will workhttp://www.streacom.com/news-item/support-for-socket-am1/ ? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
  10. I'm building a single computer set-up that will use HQ Player to for a PCM-based solution that will involve up-sampling and convolvution of up to 6 channels. The set-up needs to be silent as it'll be in the listening room and will use an existing Streamcom F5 case that goes up to 95TDP. I was about to purchase an i7 6700 but this is no longer available from the local retailer. The i7 6700K is available - and would give me a bit of future proofing to cater for a move to DSD - but I'm concerned that TDP is on the limit. Is it correct to assume that the i6700K won't get anywhere here it's TDP limit given the modest processing requirements outlined above? And, or, is the i7 7700 a better alternative?
  11. If you're using JRiver then I'd have thought that you could use JRiver's WDM driver to route audio fromyoutube through JRiver and then just output to AcourateAsio as per usual. I'm not at my laptop but you enable WDM within JRiver options and the select JRiver WDM as the default sound device in Windows Sound & Hardware.

    HQ Player

Ted - Are you saying that one can use JRiver as the GUI for HQPlayer? And, if so, then how is this done? Thanks in advance.
  13. What DAC have you been using for this upsamping?
  14. Thanks for the comprehensive post! Not sure how long I can wait as the current DAC is on it's last legs. Yes, the plan is to use the up-sampling algorithms from HQ Player. Hence the interest in a discrete chip-less implementation. I'm trying to track down pricing in Australia for the T+A DAC 8 DSD but suspect that it might have to be purchased direct from T+A in Europe. I'd discounted the Lampizator range on the basis that these got quite expensive if one wants balanced outputs (XLR) and >= 256 DSD but I'll take another look.
