I was at an Apple Store about 3 years ago, and they had an Apogee hooked up to a Macbook. I put on the headphones, and it was like my ears worked for the first time ever I have been on the quest every since. My quest escalated when my job changed and it allowed me to have my cans on 8 a day. Now each week I am looking for an incremental improvement for my portable rig.
My challenge arrived when I listened to Marvin Gaye's "All the Way Around" for the 18,234th time with my semi-decent rig. The song is obviously highly multi-tracked with an amazing amount of layers both at the vocal and instrumental levels, and requires the best unit you can buy to appreciate the work of the craftsmanship of the audio recording. It is my "test".
The quest continues, the quest on a very tight budget.
