A high proportion of the world's finest high end systems make use of tubed preamps and power amps.
  2. I've had a couple great disappointments too. A year back, a pair of the exact Magneplanar speakers I always wanted came up for sale on the Gon at a great price, with proper pallet shipping included free, which is a big deal with those speakers . When I saw them they had already been sitting there for 27 days. I went home to get clearance from the financial controller (wife) somehow talked her into allowing the cost and went to buy the speakers and found them gone. Another time before they had the buy it now option, I sent the seller my agreement to pay at his full price, shipping, etc. just to find out he had accepted an offer shortly before he received it. That one still pains me because it was a small production amp that I've never found again for sale.
  3. Since he mentioned it as a big concern, will the two bikes you recommended handle his weight?
  4. Tubelover, I sent a link to this thread to my brother in law, who owns a prominent bike shop and really knows bikes. He agreed that you have a very solid frame. He also agreed with all the upgrades that WGScott suggested. He has concerns about the fact that because you want to keep it for quite a few years, and based on that you may want to update the groupset entirely. If it was just for the next year or two, he said you would be okay, but long term, and you said you want to spend the money now, if you need to, he would go further with the upgrades. He also said he would be happy to discuss things directly, if you would like to PM me your e-mail, I'll pass it on to him.
  5. Is there a tablet, I'm thinking of the iPad Pro, that has the horsepower to run Roon and would stop the need for software on the NAS or elsewhere?
  6. Thanks for the information. So it seems that you must have a pc involved, you cannot use the MicroRendu with just a tablet (running an app) and a DAC?
  7. I would like to add a MicroRendu to my system after reading all the comments regarding its sound quality. I am trying to make sure I understand how it works. In The Review by The Computer Audiophile, he says "Inserting the microRendu into this chain enables one to remove the music server entirely. This simplifies the audio chain and removes the maintenance and cost of an "extra" computer and all its accessories. The new playback path is simply NAS to microRendu to audio system. All controlled by the an iOS or Android device." In my system, I have a NAS, and want to put the Microrendu into the chain instead of purchasing something like an Aurender N100, or similar device. Can I just add it in that way, and apparently I control it with an IOS or Android phone, preferably my iPad? If that is correct, what software can I use on my iPad to access the music on my NAS? Also has anyone found a truly good power supply that can be used with the MicroRendu for $600.00 or less? The iFi seems to be only a low end audio option and the one from Sonore is twice the price of the MicroRendu itself. That and the MicroRendu then become a more than $2000.00 choice. Very different cost territory.
  8. Hope to hear how the Marantz works out for you. I was looking into it too, and it's at the max of my budget but I would spend that amount if worth it.
  9. I had the same experience with ticket prices for the tour in my area. Not in my budget either, and would really have liked to see that show.
  10. +1 on the Oppo BDP-105D. My brother owns one and it is a great player for the cost.
  11. The Marantz NA6005 was a good suggestion, thank you. $650.00 is affordable but I have not found any real reviews of this. Not sure of the sound quality. It would be very nice to be able to use Tidal too if that is possible.
  12. Unfortunately my work laptop is completely locked down with a corporate image. No software can be installed and almost everything useful is disabled.
  13. My main music system is an amp, speakers and an Aurender N100, and DAC in my downstairs listening room. This is being fed by a Synology NAS which is upstairs by my Comcast connected router. A change at work has me starting working from home almost all the time and my office is where the router is. I have a cd player, integrated amp and speakers in that room now. What network player, or other device, could I buy for the least expensive price that is still good quality as a way to access and play the music on the NAS?
  14. I recently bought an N100 and am very pleased with the unit. I particulary like the Tidal interface. I have one question though, and I'm sure there is a very basic answer, but I can't find it in the manual. What do I have to do to get an entire cd of songs to play? I've been having to press each selection when the song before it ends. I've tried adding all songs and setting them for next, and everything else I can think of but with no success.
  15. This may be what I need too for a situation with my system needing a SPdif to USB converter. Its lower priced than the highest ranked Off Ramp and Berkeley versions, but still not inexpensive. Mutec has a great reputation in pro circles. If it is as good as it appears it might be, I would spend the money. Will there be any 30 day trial offered to make sure it works in someones system?
