  1. This was indeed a while ago....and Richard Thompson weighed in on Pat's side: I Agree With Pat Metheny
  2. Nikki Iles - Hush - Amazon.com Music Anyone tried this? Worth a listen. Also thanks for the Triosence recommendation - listening to it now - very nice!
  3. I'm a huge fan of Houston Person & Bill Charlap's "You Taught My Heart To Sing".
  4. Drummer Antonio Sanchez has a new 2-CD out called Three Times Three, featuring three trios, one of which is relevant here. Each trio plays one standard and two Sanchez originals. The first trio is Brad Mehldau (piano) and Matt Brewer (bass) - very busy, very entertaining. The standard is a variant on "Nardis" called "Nar-This" which truly breathes new life into the tune. Out of interest the second is John Scofield (guitar) and Christian McBride (bass), which might be the most enjoyable (standard is Wayne Shorter's "Fall") , and the third is Joe Lovano (sax) and John Pattituci (bass) which is just a hoot (standard is Monk's "I Mean You").
  5. Red Mitchell has to be worth a mention, for this stunning album: As does Arild Anderson, especially the tune "Saturday" on this album (there's a fantastic 15-minute live version of his quintet with Marcin Wasilewski and others playing this on on YouTube):
  6. My favorite album of all time, let alone favorite live album.
  7. Absolutely, these guys are the most exciting trio around IMHO. Recommended for others on this thread: All feature mostly MW originals, with occasional cover versions. Just stunning.
  8. The Marcin Wasilewski Trio has a new album on ECM - albeit there's a sax on half the tracks, but if you're an ECM/Wasilewski fan this is excellent stuff.
  9. What a great thread - I created an account here to join in. I have many of these albums mentioned here - big fan of Marcin Wasilewski, Mehldau and others - but a lot mentioned here are new to me, so this is going to be educational (and expensive!). I haven't seen explicit reference to the two Brad Mehldau Trio albums released recently - Ode and Where Do You Start. Where Do You Start is mostly covers. Some old (Brownie Speaks, Airegin), some modern (Got Me Wrong by Alice In Chains, Hey Joe, and a gorgeous Holland by Sufjan Stevens) plus BM's almost obligatory Nick Drake (here it's Time Has Told Me). There's also a BM tune called Jam that's excellent. Super stuff. Ode is all originals, and may be the better album, and that's high praise. I really think it's his best collection of original tunes yet - highly recommended. I'm seeing him in Boulder in a couple of weeks - should be great! I also recently saw the Christian McBride Trio in Denver - McBride on bass, Ulysses Owens on drums and Christian Sands on piano. They set out deliberately to play "straight-ahead", old-school bop style - and they're fantastic live. The album is Out Here. And finally I'd like to add Fred Simon. He plays very melodically - at the opposite end of the spectrum perhaps from some of the ECM guys' impressionism - but it's lovely stuff. On the Naim label, there's a regular trio album Dreamhouse, plus a better album (imho) is a trio of Simon on piano, Steve Rodby (Pat Metheny Group) on bass and Paul McCandless (Oregon) on reeds - Remember The River. Thanks to everybody who's chipped in with suggestions, this has been great reading (and listening).
