    Mac help

Hi folks, I have a friend on another forum who has a little problem. Apart from that, his Mac is playing games. He is on Maveriks and because I used to know everything, followed my advice to get Cache cleaner to repair all his permissions etc.after his Mac was starting to run slow. He downloaded it through CNET rather than direct and suddenly he is directed to Yahoo every time he clicks on a link. I tried it on the latest Firefox update and it did the same. Deleted all the library folders and now its fine. However, he say it does it in all his browsers which I find strange. If anyone can offer any guidance, I would be grateful.
  3. Absolutely, I have no problem with the machines even though in general I prefer the way Macs look and are built. Its the damned operating system that I still think is a mess, totally illogical and non-intuitive and the bits copied from the Mac are done badly. However, I have never felt the need to investigate Ubuntu as MacOs does it for me :-) As ever though, you pays your money and you makes your choice.
  4. A very good question!! No idea. PCs seem to have no logical way of finding anything so I wouldn't know where to look!! The deed is done now so no great need for an answer but it did seem very strange that one way would work and not the other. back to my friendly Mac I think :-)
  5. If you say so. Its my favourite of all the players on the Mac. I've tried them all and always return to iTunes with BitPerfect. One man's meat is another man's poison it seems.
  6. I have been recording a load of vinyl for a friend as she wants to use her iPod and dock to listen to all her old stuff. In spite of this and the fact that she uses a PC instead of a proper computer, we are still friends.:-) I went there today with a hard disk full of tunes and connected to said PC. As I always do, I checked the prefs and made sure it added the files when importing and tried to import by 'add to library'. Nowt. Thought maybe it was a Mac folder problem and tried individually - nope. Had lunch. Suddenly thought of dragging and dropping and voila - no problem, all imported properly. Why oh why would it work that way and not from a menu command I wonder? I know the real reason is because its a PC but even then I find it a bit peculiar!!
  7. Thanks for that. very strange that, on opening JRiver, all the views are now based on artwork. This is not how I left it as I didn't know it could do it obviously. The prog must be psychic!! I'll keep plying with it but it still feels like a PC program rather than a Mac one. Now I have BitPerfect, I'm not sure it sounds any better either. Nevertheless, its handy to have an alternative that does what I want, even if it seems a bit complex to get there. When the trial runs out I'm not sure I will keep it but we will see.
  8. I'm an iTunes user but have looked at others occasionally, including JRiver. The reason I have rejected all the others and gone back to iTunes is the boredom of 'lists'. All of them just seem to give great list stretching down the screen which is a most unintuitive way of selecting music if you are used to LP covers and CD boxes. iTunes11 seems to have gone in the same direction so I've dumped that and gone back to version 10 which allows easy layout of album covers. I have playlists of artists or genre and within that its all album covers. Is there a way to do that in JRiver? If so, will it take hours of scripts and messing about?? iTunes10 makes it all easy and I'm all for easy.

    Problems

I've tried JRiver and found it pretty much like iTunes11 in the way it organises, I assume Apple changed it because people complained they preferred the layout. Not for me. We have nine Macs of various vintage lying about the house, even keep a G3 iMac because there are some old system 9 games that are still fun and would never have been updated.

    Problems

Keeping up to date has been a major problem. I did and regretted it as far as iTunes is concerned. In updating to version 11, Apple have completely ruined the layout for me. I have reverted to Version 10 and have no intention of changing it unless they reintroduce a couple of things - mind you, as you can't try it before permanently installing, perhaps I'll never know. If that means that one or two other progs no longer work with it, thats fine. My MacPro is the last model that WON'T run maveriks. However, I have solved my immediate problem thanks to another BitPerfect user and am now using Version 1 of that as well. It works fine, all the preferences are in place instead of some blank screens and, to my ears at least, sounds slightly better than Version 2. Presumably a combination problem of some kind. I will be very wary of trying any updates now that it works. I do think that any updates should have a trial period during which you have to confirm you wish to keep it. Otherwise it should revert to the previous version. Apple should tell us if there are major changes to the way something works rather than just assume we want their latest and greatest. Thanks for the reply.

    Problems

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion, will try that. The Pro is Intel running Snow Leopard. 10.6.8. Most of my music is either Apple lossless or AIFF. I really want to get BitPerfect sorted. Have just discovered that they have their own thread here so will keep an eye on that.

    Problems

Whilst vinyl is still my main source, I am trying to sort of my 'desk' system. Im running a MacPro with iTunes as the library - please don't bother suggesting an alternative to iTunes as I am quite happy with the way it works - version 10 that is not 11, I hate that. I bought BitPerfect and it didn't work. Apparently a problem with the way Apple insist on permissions means that it doesn't work properly with Snow Leopard. My MacPro is just too old to run the latest system. The software people sent me an unofficial build that works very well - when its running. Problem is, it keeps quitting at the end of one track and refuses to start again. I have to restart to get it to run. So, until the helpdesk gets back to me I won't use it. Shame, as it sounds pretty good, certainly presents a slightly less 'digital' sound. Can anyone suggest an alternative that is either cheap or better - free?? I'm not supposed to be spending anything on the hi-fi at the mo!! I have had suggestions for alternative players but I don't like the way most of them present the music layoutwise
