OK so D1 says it is rated up to 24/192 but I think this is only thru optical (toslink) so how does that work if the standard does not support it? I see in literature for same that it "streams bit perfect audio at 24/96." So am I confusing something here? Also I was asking myself the same question about CD resolution. So all CDs are 16/44.1 right so what happens if I play it back at 24/96?

I am in the process of trying to get up to speed on the computer audiophile bandwagon and I will apologize out of the gate if I ask a few questions that are "basic" in nature, but I figure that since I get to start from a clean slate I might as well do it right. Jumping right in I am using an Audioengine D1 DAC into Emotiva Airmotiv 4s. I have a toslink mini jack on my toshiba laptop and am using that to run my audio to the D1. My initial question(s) are related to the correct settings for this both in Windows Sound and in iTunes, and then I am trying to sort out the optical cable. The current cable I have is a very short Mini tos to toslink cable that came with the DAC and I assume it is a generic cheap cable as it is white and has no make on it and it is about 8 inches long. I am able to set my Windows Sound default format to 2 channel, 24 bit, 192000 Hz and do the same inside of itunes and it works quite well. I wanted a longer cable so I got a 1 meter Sonicwave glass Toslink to Toslink cable and I had to buy a cheapo mini jack tos adaptor. I actually bought one of those right angle ones as well as a straight one. I could not get this cable to play at all and switched back to the 8 inch job and it worked fine. So I worked my way thru the settings in Windows and landed on the 24 bit 96khz setting and it worked. I realized that i pretty much had to close and restart itunes for each change I made for it to work. I also did not have to change the settings in itunes just the one in windows to eventually make this work so i landed on the default setting in Windows at 24/96 and left iTunes Playback at 24/192. The angled adaptor is intermittant and the straight one is better but still has some inconsistency and ultimately makes me think this is not the way to go, so I am going to invest in a proper toslink to mini toslink cable I guess....suggestions? (that is open ended.....) What i need to know is does it make sense that this "better" glass cable will only work at the lower setting and am I setting this up right both in Windows and in iTunes? I really don't know how the settings interact with one another as far as priority etc., but it is apparant that if I lower the setting I can make the sonicwave cable work, but I see no reason to spend the $ on this and have worse (or no) sound in doing so which is basically the case here. I will add that I do believe the sound is better at the higher resolution (is this the right term?) and thru the cheapo cable and I assume the adaptors are to blame here for the most part as they definately sometimes work and sometimes they don't? Is the length of the cable a factor as well? Part 2 of this series is that I am ripping my entire CD collection again, as I did it in 2005 when my cds went into storage and before I knew or cared about anything other than getting my music onto my ipod quickly. So the whole thing is saved as 128 kbps AAC.... I believe I have figured out I am going to go to FLAC and probably get dbpoweramp to do this with. I guess I'll take any suggestions here on this as well, anything from settings to tips or tircks etc... I still use an ipod so converting files to MP3 or such for iTunes is a given but otherwise for listening to music thru my system I assume you guys run JRiver or Foobar etc. and not iTunes from what I can tell so let me know what is a good choice here as well.... I know this is a long post with a bazillion questions but I would love some feed back on any or all of the above if you have anything to pass on, Sincerely, Trip
