  1. If a Hi-Res pcm dac is a non-upsampling dac, does the dac need a sample rate converter chip?
  2. Human hearing isn't capable of making comparisons to answer DBTs on the fly. Just like everything else, in order to do DBTs one must practice doing DBTs. Without practice you just will not be good at it. It doesn't matter how well you know your own system. It requires time to train your ears to do this. This is why we can hear dramatic differences at home and still not be great at DBts. Cognitive dissonance exists but the big lie (imo) is we can't overcome it. We can overcome it and learn to build systems to taste. After years of listening and system building I've to this conclusion or opinion.
  3. I agree, its more than just DSD in itself. The Meitner appears to playback DSD using proprietary PCM 24 bit architecture. Its how Meitner gets their sound and its not born out of DSD single bit Sacd roots. It comes down to what you like, and if DSD can help shape your gear to get it to sound the way you want..... all the power to you.
  4. Its a good remaster, I can hear bass play and notes that ride over the bass drum. Stuff released earlier on cd got the bass drum and bass guitar jammed together (blended). More resolution here with the remaster.
  5. One of the benefits of Hi res is to emulate a pure analogue recorded signal. Like what led Zeppelin master tapes would look like. The 24 bit engineering goal is to output a smoother analogue wave signal that looks genuine analogue and not a quasi digital signal that requires filtering to smooth out. So yes those old recording can be thought of as hi res when looking at it from a digital perspective.
  6. This is looks interesting also and I have a dealer close by.
  7. I have a nice PCM dac and was looking at a dac for DSD while hanging on to my BDA2.
  8. About $1k to 1.5K that's geared towards DSD only.
  9. How common is it to buy 2 dacs. One for DSD and one for PCM duty. Is this a common approach?. Looking for a good DSD dac. Maybe a dac that is better at DSD than PCM? Any suggestions would be helpful.
  10. I'm willing to do it. What I've heard from Devialet, including class D hybrids like Micromega and Chapter makes me want to pursue it. Digital ime has taken on its on characteristics. There is a synthetic quality to the playback that i love. It's not studio grade playback that includes a natural timbre to instruments but a very processed and alluring sound. It works because noise and distortion have been engineered down.
  11. ^^^^^^ Don't worry, you'll be back to the Scotch soon enough. Try the 12 year Elijah Craig bourbon in small batch. That will keep you interested until the Scotch craving shows up.
  12. Ha.. my bad. I get confused. Its the resistors in the volume output of the dac that nerfs the dynamics. No volume control are where the OP amps run into trouble. They both present a situation where a preamp is useful. That's been my experience, not meant to be a blanket statement on good sound.
