  1. So it looks like I would need to install RuneAudio or Volumio. Can I set up a dual boot? i.e. have a Raspbmc and alternatively boot into RuneAduio or Volumio?
  2. thank you bbrazil, lasker, bluesman for all the suggestions. Now to do more research...
  3. Ok, another option that I never heard of: UDOO: Android Linux Arduino in a tiny single-board computer Now I seem to have even more choices...
  4. Thank you Richard Dale. I have to sift through all this to make a decision.
  5. Thank you mayhem13 - the project is driven partly by price, simplicity, size, and fun BUT something that must work with an asynch DAC (which I have not bought yet). Is this the mini comp you refer to? Canada Computers | Desktop PCs | Gigabyte GB-BXA8-5545 BRIX Barebone System |AMD Richland Processor A8-5545M 1.7G/ 2.7GHz Quad-Core , 2XDDR3 1.35V SODIMM | AMD Radeon HD 8510G Graphics HDMI+Mini Display Port, | WiFi+Bluetooth, 4x USB 3.0 I guess I wasn't looking to spend that much but if I want to use a more complicated DAC (like this one): Korg DS DAC 10 DA Converter 1bit USB DAC Black From Japan M008 0018 | eBay then I may have to. I'll have to examine my options. I may set up a Raspbmc for movies, etc and then BB Black for audio.
  6. Thank you 4est - I will check out RuneAudio and Volumio. BUT from your other post it seems the beaglebone black would be the better choice but I will probably still need a powered USB hub with that as well.
  7. Thank you for the response bbrazil. 1 - so you recommend the raspian flavour of linux as an audiophile solution? 2 - MPD can be installed on Rasp Pi? 3 - I was thinking of adding a powered USB hub so that I can connect a WD USB hard drive and then plug in an asynch USB DAC. Do you think that might work with raspian? I guess the question still remains whether an asych DAC will work with the rasp pi. I see that your DAC seems to be asynch: Schiit Audio Modi USB DAC | AudioStream I can handle the Linux commands but I can't write new drivers or programming in Linux. I need a solution that I know will work with an asynch DAC as I'd rather not buy an expensive DAC to find out it cannot be used...
  8. Sorry for the late response Richard. I'll try to reply with some of my uncertainties: 1 - which flavour of Pi is best suited to playing high resolution audio files? Can two different versions of OS be installed - one for video and the other for high end audio? 4 - I would really prefer to get an asynchronous USB DAC. What is the limiting factor for Pi? Lack of drivers or is it something to do with the OS itself? 5 - I have not heard of MPD - is this what you mean? Music Player Daemon Would this installed on the Pi? Instead of Squeezebox? 6 - I work in IT and sometimes use RedHat Linux but I am no expert. So I think I can manage following instructions on how to type in Linux commands, etc. but I do not know how to write drivers. So I am looking for a solution that is known to work rather than buy an $800 asynch DAC that I won't be able to use. So you propose getting this instead? BeagleBoard.org - BeagleBone Black I never heard of beaglebone black. Can it also run XBMC? Seems that I should reconsider getting the Pi (so far have not bought one yet). Thank you for all the input. Any more insight you could provide (such as answers to the questions above), would be appreciated.
  9. My first raspberry pi project. I would connect the Pi to my router via the ethernet connection. I would then connect my external Western Digital hard drive (music ripped to wav) to the Pi (via USB) and then run the Pi (via USB) to an audiophile DAC such as this one: Musical Fidelity | M1DAC DAC As the Rasp Pi has only 2 USB connections, I am thinking of using a powered USB Hub such as the Targus Ultra mini 4-port hub: Targus | PA055C – Targus 2.0 Ultra Mini USB 4 Port Hub I think I can do this with this Raspberry Pi 8GB Bundle from Newark: http://canada.newark.com/raspberry-pi-accessories?CMP=KNC-G-SUPP-RASPBERRYPI&mckv=sRWWX7QIA|pcrid|17340880372|plid| I would then use a wireless keyboard/mouse combo to control it all. TV would be connected via hdmi. My questions are: 1 - Would Raspbmc be the best choice to install on the Pi? 2 - should I install SqueezePlug as? 3 - Will the Rasp Pi work with the Targus powered 4-port hub? 4 - will an audiophile DAC work connected to the Rasp pi? Do I need to install extra drivers? 5 - Can the Pi take advantage of higher resolution files and pipe them to the DAC? 6 - Does this overall set up sound easy enough or do people see some pitfalls?
