  1. Nobody auditioned a 500 USD external DAC against a dedicated audiocard ?
  2. Hi all, I am trying to get the most out of my stored audio files, setup: htpc with Asus Xonar Essence RCA In / RCA Out on a Yamaha AX-1070 and Paradigm Studio 100 V5 speakers. To a certain degree I’ve been generally content with the sonic output, both the sound card and speakers have been an improvement to the SQ, however I do feel something is still missing. Something that makes the hairs of my neck stand up and produces running shivers down my spine when listening to Kurtis Elling’s – Nature Boy or Agnes Obel’s – the Curse. It feels like it wants to come out, but it's not there yet I do not know which part of the set-up might be trailing behind. The large speakers produce a very rich and full sound stage albeit a bit boxed at times, perhaps on occasion slightly metallic. The bass is a bit lacking also however I’ve come to accept this (for now). I was considering the Arcam irDAC and perhaps also a new amp later this year. In the future perhaps upgrading the speakers towards the B&W CM10 or someday the B&W 803 diamond, the source however will always be a pc / server setup and herein lie the first questions; 1.Is there any chance of sonic improvement in having the Arcam irDAC over the Asus Xonar Essence? Has anybody auditioned a similar set-up ? 2. Would a stereo amp (or pre-amp + amp combo) generally produce better sound for music listening in 2.0, than an AV Receiver like for instance the Pioneer SC-LX87? 3. Would the Arcam irDAC be superior to the internal dac of an AV receiver (like the SABRE 32bit Ultra DAC)for 2.0 music listening? Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated ! Thanks
