  1. Don't have an ipad. Got an iphone & can play mp3's & streaming radio - limited sound quality. My son has an expensive Mac laptop, maybe I can convince him to download some hi-rez audio and try some experiments - if he's not too busy.
  2. Thanks to Jeff for the lead. Ceobella, Using the front panel usb port and a flash drive I'm able to play losless cd's using the WMV format,. Very nice sound. With WAV files on the same usb drive, the Marantz knows that a file is present but doesn't recognize the format. Mayhem, the Marantz is the newest equipment I own. I'm strictly two channel with three McIntosh components: mc-2105, c-24, mr-71; & Pioneer Rt-909 r-2-r, Thorens td-145/Denon-dl103r. Vansersteen 2-c. I'm sure you're correct about the Marantz's inability to handle an exrensive music file (I've got around 400 cd&sacd). But, the internal dac sounds pretty good to me. More and more, I'm liking digital sourced sound.
  3. Looks like a good place to start. Thanks,
  4. I'm a long time audio enthusiast with a focus on analog (and) vintage components. While I have concentrated on vinyl and r-2-r tape, I have accumulated cd's for many years and over the past few years sacd's. I'm interested in exploring and widening my interests into hi-rez digital music. Ideally, I would like to establish an accessible data file (system?) containing all my cd's and hi-rez digital stuff. I would like to avoid having to (permanently) connect a computer to my system and, instead, use my Marantz sa-8004 sacd player as the digital entry to the analog part of my system. Here's what the Marantz is supposed to do. Front and rear panel USB inputs expand your musical horizons as never before. Now you can enjoy your iPhone and iPod audio files via a digital connection and hear them anew though your audio system courtesy of the SA8004’s advanced circuitry. In addition to your iPod and iPhone files, you can “push” high definition digital music files from your computer to the SA8004. If you use either the coaxial or optical rear panel digital inputs, the SA8004 handles 24-bit PCM data at sampling rates up to 192 kHz. The SA8004 also accepts data from any USB stick or USB hard drive storage device. (This digital input is processed through the Marantz dac.) Rather than asking forum readers to waste their time trying to tutor me on this subject, I would simply appreciate any recommendations on reading materials that would help me get up to speed so that I could ask intelligent questions (like "Computer Audio for Dummies). It seems like everything I read on the subject assumes a level of knowledge that I don't possess. And, most self-proclaimed computer audio experts I ask don't really seem to understand this subject.Like what s a music servers? what is a squeezebox? is a squeezebox a music server? what is the difference between a file sent to my dac from a usb drive and one sent from a computer? Thanks,
