  1. Thanks again. I use streamers in my second and third systems for casual listening. I'm not too computer knowledgeable, nor do I have the time to learn, so no RPis or similar. I do wonder about the iFi Zen Stream and whether they've fixed the glitches I read about when they first released it.
  2. Thanks. One of the DACs I use for streaming does have a USB input. And I don't use Roon, so that is of no matter.
  3. I have the Sonos Connect which has a very poor sounding digital out which, according to what I've read, hasn't been improved upon in the Port. I have to use an iFi SPDIF iPurifier to get the Connect to sound decent. I need another streamer and would also like to simplify my existing setup. So is the SPDIF digital out on the Bluesound Node better than that on the Sonos Port?
  4. Hi, I haven't been following computer audio for a while but am probably going to finally run an ethernet cable from my router to my A/V systems: a distance of about 80'. I have 1GB internet service. What cable should I use? Cat 6, 7, 8? Brand (something reasonably priced for this length)? TIA
  5. I tried Amazon HD last year for a few months. I also had Qobuz at the same time. I was disappointed with both for different reasons (although both UIs needed improvement). Amazon has a very extensive catalog of music; Qobuz's catalog was unfortunately much more limited in areas that are important to me, i.e., "Americana" and Mediterranean music (particularly Tarantella/Pizzica). However the sound from Amazon was too forward (emphasized leading edge transients) and had an upper midrange that was glarey. The sound from Qobuz was very natural and pleasing and at about the same level as my CD rips. This was the case through both my main and second systems. Gordon Rankin had this to say about Amazon's sound a while back on AA: "Anyway, Amazon's service is not really that great at this time. I am not sure if it will be upgraded and I have already seen some changes since day 1. But here are the two big problems. a) The use an adaptive streaming method which means that first off the music is not bit true and the quality varies depending on your link speed and the servers ability to send content. b) They resample all incoming music to the highest sample rate selected. They kind of assume you have the default rate at the max... if you don't they complain and tell you to change it. They don't use Exclusive mode or give you the option for that so it's really so so sonically."
  6. Interesting; thanks for the info. My Connect is newer (a few years old) but that's good to know. I posted the same question on AA, which received one response; i.e., to wit that the analog outputs sounded significantly improved but the digital ones did not.
  7. Has anyone compared the sound quality of the new Sonos Port to the Sonos Connect? On the analog and digital outputs? TIA
  8. So, a VPN won't even protect from a hacker in physical proximity to you on a public network?
  9. I'm just looking for a reasonable amount of privacy: not the absolute. Again, the concern is mostly when using a public network.
  10. I gather there is some skepticism about VPN's claims of not recording usage logs? But doesn't using a VPN help protect against hackers in your proximity while on a public network?
  11. This is primarily what I was referring to: protection/privacy while on a public network. Can I use OpenDNS while also using a VPN?
