  1. I quote the recent SF Weekly interview with Tiny Telephone president John Vanderslice: “analog isn’t better. It just sounds different.” Telephone just invested $800,000 in refurbishing the legendary tape machine from Record Plant. You’d think if anyone were to have an incentive to spew marketing drivel about analog, it would be him. Enough said. 2. Tremendous thumbs-up for lossless Tidal streaming, with Roon. Use case: my son is a jazz saxophone student. To study approaches to improvisation, he searches for the name of a tune, and BAM -- a list of 200+ improvisations are available to study, integrated with the home server content. Amazing. I wish I had this when I was a kid. No dropouts or other trouble. Ever.
  3. RE: FLAC v WAV -- if you are running JRiver there is an option under Tools>Settings to unspool the FLAC in memory. Works great. Give it a whirl.
  4. Please see attached for the DACs in the shootout -- hope it's legible
  5. Wonderful news. Enjoy. I had the 105D as my digital source, spinning SACD, Blu-Ray Audio, and DVD-A, constantly. I got a lot of enjoyment out of it, and it is a very good machine. That said, playing rips via the W4S DAC-2 DSD SE showed a significant improvement here--with my ears--and my rig. Looking forward to hearing more about your adventure with this stuff. I had the good fortune to have a local friend with a setup that just sounded spectacular. Essentially all I did was emulate his rig. That made things a lot simpler this time around with upgrading. I'm a member of the San Francisco Audiophile Society, and a DAC shotout event is being held February 20th. Some 10 to 15 DACs are being compared, many surprisingly affordable. Pretty sure some notes on the results of that shootout will be posted in the forums. If you are still deciding on a DAC by then, maybe keep your eyes peeled for that post, or ping me. Might be useful info. Sent from my iPad using Computer Audiophile mobile app

  8. Yeah! From the recently remastered (2016) 6-CD box. Siouxsie never sounded this good.
  9. I find no evidence of slop attitudes or crappola equipment in pro recording studios. I'd agree that plenty of indie artists generate low-fi work because of cost constraints, or straight out desire for a homebrew, DIY aesthetic. Maybe that's what some refer to here. But let's make that distinction. In my experience, spectacular capture has little to do with the brand of cables, etc. -- sometimes it just happens -- often it doesn't.
  10. To the original poster, standard practice with audio system changes is to leave the stuff in for about a week, then see if you are digging it. You can continually run your rig at low volume if you wish. Whether the root cause of perceived changes is electronic, or placebo effect, makes no difference, IMHO. Audio is subjective and personal. If it sounds better to you, then right on, brother. It's about the music anyway. Many audio cats perceive modest changes--I have myself--and most of those cats have much more experience examining small system changes than I ever will. Some of those guys are worth chatting with. RE: Audiogon (above post) the high-end forums have their share of absolute drivel, agreed, and to confess, I love to make fun of that. But there are also thoughtful and bright guys on there, just like on this forum. If tinkering with cables is your bag, hanging on some of those forums might be really fun. I'd check it out.
