1. Yep, it's me again. The husband. Prepare to fling rotting fruits and vegetables. Dare I suggest what variety of produce might be most appropriate? Perhaps not, although oddly enough the MacIntosh is my favourite. The wife is partial to Spartans. Go figger. Just wanted to step out from lurking in the shadows to explain Nancy's "oh goody" comment. Sadly, doesn't mean it's all fixed. Not sure ma cherie understands that when you post a reply it shows up consecutive to the last posting, not the one she's replying to. Which was Bob Stern's of the 16th, referencing that she might lose some things like "ratings", and "last date played" and other who gives a crap stuff (other than Apple, I mean). I explained that these are some of the columns you immediately get rid of to make room for other minor info details like, I don't know, "artist", "album", "track title" etc. Just wanted to keep the flow going in a way that makes sense--coz clearly there is a flow here, and this is good. Not a coverflow yet, but that day may come. I'll be back (not wearing gargoyles), because believe it or not I did have an intention here beyond getting everyone's knickers in a twist and buggering off. Clearly I have some 'splaining to do--and this will follow. Just not now, because I have to go see a client and we have a winter storm warning in effect. In the meantime thanks to all who have taken my Poohbear seriously and genuinely tried to help. Particular shout-out to wgscott. Clearly a gentleman, as--believe it or not--I try to be. Especially like the H.S. Thompson quote--always been one of my favourites. Also, nice chapeau. Too bad it appears not to be working.
 2. Hey all, Couple weeks ago my dear wife (nebear on here) finally got working (more or less), for a brief shining moment the Airport Express/iTunes shambles I was brain-dead enough to set her up with just under 2 years ago. Worst birthday present ever. Kinda got things sorted out, just a few thousand duplicates, still lots of "cannot find the original file" or whatever the frig, but it was kinda working and she was sorta happy. Then came 10.1.2 and it all went to crap. Well, not all, but the only part of it (aside from the AE being cheap and wireless), that made me even consider having anything Apple-related allowed in the house, and only for her sake, since she's all about the visual. That being Coverflow. Suddenly, with the new download, it just wasn't there. Apple's been less than zero help (surprise, surprise), and sadly, to this point, neither has CA been. So I tells her: sign up on CA and ask around. It's an awesome site and Chris is like the Steven Hawking of this stuff--only I assume he gets around a bit better. So she started a thread on the "software" forum: "New Itunes will not give me coverflow using Windows7" on Jan. 30th. She detailed fairly concisely the problem she's been having--which I would have to consider to be a pretty serious one (and surely she can't be the only one having it--and yes, I'm calling you Shirley). Nothing, nada, zero, zilch. Her post has been completely ignored. An admittedly less-than-exhaustive search of the site has turned up at least one other person reporting the same thing (57gold posted similarly on Dec. 19th. Nancy got no such message about coverflow "not being available on this computer"--and why the hell not, btw? If Apple software won't even work on an Apple computer...? I mean really! I guess that's just not an issue to the kings and queens of shiny white plastic. One more reason Apple HQ should be bulldozed into the Pacific and serve a much more useful role as a tourist destination for divers and marine life), and he has been ignored entirely as well. Other than to have Bdiament post 22 minutes later that it's working fine for him. That's all very well and good for Barry, but not really much help, if you know what I mean. So how about it, folks? A little help maybe? Some input from those of you who unaccountably love yer precious iTunes so much? So far nothing but an apparent "So?" from Crapple itself and squat-all from all of yuz. Not for me, y'understand--coz I will continue to loathe iTunes and all things Apple until the day I die--but for the wife. And 57gold, whomever he or she may be. Me, I say EAC/foobar forever. I can live just fine with running a USB cable to my HRT musicstreamer+ and thence into my Morrison preamp. Coz you know why? Coz it works, that's why. I tell foobar to play the music and it just, you know, plays it. No drama, no heartbreak, no regrets--just music. Aw, gee--no pictures, either. If I want to see the album cover I have to pick it up and look at it. But at least I can do so while actually enjoying the music it came with. Gonna get her to check out JRiver...which I gather will strangely enough work with her AE and still show cover art. It may just actually, you know, work. What a concept. Sure it's 50 bucks, but I'd rather spend it on that than on a call to the world headquarters of arrogant, smug prickery. Die, Apple, die! Justin Long can bite me. I'd die a happy man tomorrow if in just one of those ads John Hodgman would rear back, haul off and kick him really hard right in the goolies. OK, rant over. Seriously, I think this is an important issue, coz it seems--in our house at least, that the only thing that makes iTunes remotely worthwhile ain't no more. And nobody seems to give a rat's. So c'mon, Chris and all you other misguided fruit-lovers--bring it, 'kay? (The above is not intended to be a personal insult to the thousands of individuals around the world who for reasons of their own continue to support Apple Computer and its bizarre policy of charging ludicrous amounts of money for things that don't work. They are the personal opinions of David A. Clark of Selby, Ontario, Canada, who is, of course, correct. Other views are welcome. Wrong, but welcome)
 3. Chris,

Hope you can help. I'm trying to get my wife set up with iTunes and an Airport on her IBM laptop. Thing is, we're not Mac people, and that's not about to change any time soon. I've been really happy with foobar and EAC on my own laptop PC in the back room. Dirt-cheap but surprisingly not-bad-sounding Behringer UCA202, a WD external hard drive and I was up and running for less than 200 bucks. At first I mainly wanted something just to rip vinyl, and the Behringer seemed to be about the only thing without more than I need...since I already have a phono stage I'm really happy with. I was just testing the waters on the playback side and now I think I'm hooked. Maybe a Benchmark next...

Thing is, for my wife I really need something wireless, and the Airport seems to be about the only fairly cheap game in town. Plus while I like foobar better, I think she'll like the more visual aspect of iTunes.

So I guess what I'm asking is, will this work? And can you offer any setup advice? I'm using dbpoweramp music converter to change my FLAC files to Apple Lossless and keeping it all on my external hard drive, then planning to download iTunes to my wife's laptop and transfer the music files to it. I assume Airtunes (comes with Airport?) will let me set things up so iTunes can send the files to the Airport. We have a wireless network in the house. Some Cisco Linksys whatever device for our internet. Seems to work OK.

So...can I set up her iTunes library on my hard drive, with artwork and everything, and then move it to her computer fairly quickly? Or do I have to set up the library and add on the artwork once the files are transferred? It's her birthday coming up and I'd like to surprise her with suddenly having all her music literally at her fingertip. Nothing to plug in or dick with, just turn on the stereo, open up her laptop and go to.

I guess what I need to know the most is whether I can set up the library, with artwork, on my system (it'll be on the external drive), and then move it to hers with just a couple of keypad taps the night before. As opposed to being up all night loading up all the artwork manually. Or digitally I guess would be more accurate. Your bit on moving an iTunes library (which I assume means including artwork) was a bit apple-centric. Any advice for us in the other 90-odd percent of the world who struggle on quite happily with PCs and Windows?

Sorry to dither on, but I'm trying to write this as I feverishly scan 200-odd CD booklets while my wife is out. Shoulda thought of that first, before learning a hard lesson about trying to track down cover art on the internet. That way lies madness. And very low resolution.

So to sum up: Airport. PC. Airtunes. PC. iTunes. PC. Situating, moving, logistics. PC.

Eagerly awaiting your guidance.

Yer pal,

dc23
