  1. Thanks for the advice! Thats actually a pretty damn good idea. I just figured it'd be cool to experiment with optical since I have the option.
  2. Its a shame to hear they came across those kinds of issues. The Geek Pulse seems like a good idea but as you probably guessed I'm a little eager to find a nice DAC, and like you said its a bit of a gamble. My budget is around 500 dollars for a DAC alone (I know, its pretty low), but I'm going to be looking at used equipment when available. Also random question. Would it be a better idea to connect the laptop to the DAC via optical or USB? Does using either one bring different things to the table?
  3. I really like the look of the AudioLab M-DAC. It may be hard to find one here in the states though. I've been looking at Peachtree for quite some time now, I can only afford to shop within the used market at the moment though. I like the idea of a less portable DAC. I've been mainly looking at the Meridian/Dragonfly. But I feel like one could get better for the price buying a DAC that isn't geared for portable use. Your comments have been extremely helpful. Any suggestions to cabling that I should get (usb)? I'm not looking for something crazy, but just something well rounded for the price. I hate to post in here that I'm on such a tight budget, kind of a contradiction with the Audiophile hobby, but I suppose that is the life of a broke college kid.
  4. I don't have an optical out so I'd have to assume that using a USB DAC would be beneficial. Yeah most of my listening files are 24/96 etc. For some reason I just figured there is a better type of cabling than rca to aux. Do you have any suggestions for integrated amps? Are there integrated amps geared for computer audio? (different kinds of inputs etc). Thanks for your patience, I know its a little frustrating having these questions sometimes. I'll give the FAQ a look. I'm considering getting the Audioquest Dragonfly DAC (especially since its on sale for 100 bucks). Would this be a good DAC to get started on?
  5. I kind of have a general idea of how to start things off but I figure I should leave it to the enthusiasts to determine that. I understand I should probably have a computer dedicated for audio, but all I can afford at the moment is to use my Macbook Pro 2012 i7 Ivy Bridge with 8GB of ram. I have some main questions that I wanted to get out of the way. 1. I have mainly been using vintage receivers, will I need to stick to modern integrated amps if I want to make the most out of my MacBook Pro? 2. I have been using an RCA to AUX cable in order to listen to things off of my computer, are there any drawbacks to using the headphone jack port on my MacBook to listen to music? If there are any drawbacks, is there anything I can do about it? Is there a better connection to use than the 3.5 aux? 3. Does method of storage matter? My current setup is a Pioneer SX-636 (plan on upgrading to something more modern), to my Music Hall Marimba's, using some cheap RCA to Aux cable.
