  1. a good album, but the digital download is mp3! and its not clear what the file quality is until you download it, which I did, and now I'm going to return it. Bit rates from 151kbps -203 kbps. Terrible. What do you do in cases like this, buy the CD and rip? St. Vincent is the same thing - she has earlier albums on HD Tracks but the latest is an MP3 download. Is it asking too much these days for well mastered high res downloads as an option? what is wrong with the labels?
  2. Good question..I would HOPE Wilco have higher standards and more control over their label decisions to go for quality...
  3. Thanks! I'll be more careful next time : - ) and wait for high res and forget the sales pitches.
  4. I just received my pre-ordered package from KungFu records of Wilco's new album Schmilco. I paid extra (close to $80) to get vinyl, digital download, tshirt, and a book. I would expect that the digital download would be the highest quality available, or at least I'd have a choice of high res or format given the $ spent. Well, I got an MP3 at 44.1/16 320 Kbps. Now I see that on HD tracks there is a 96/24 bit lossless version for about $18.00. Does this mirror your experiences with these pre-order packages? Does anyone know yet if the 96/24 version is really higher resolution or is it a repackaging of the MP3 like Beck did recently? Very disappointing given Wilco's traditionally high quality recording standards. Yes I have vinyl but I mainly listen to high res for convenience. And I feel scammed! I've emailed KungFu for comment...
  5. "whomever comes up with a nice little adapter will make a lot of money. " Sounds like a job for @Superdad!
  6. Thank you Chris and everyone here for educating me about good sound and ways to get it, while not forgetting its about the joy. Sincerely, very happy listening to music tonight, on my second class pc 'rig' nearly in tears. have come so far from Limewire virus downloads on my Logitech desktop speakers! send lawyers guns and money the Schitt has hit the fan! in 24/192 thank you! Warm regards on a cold night, Hanover33
  7. Thanks for sharing this...was it Rockfords or Rockport that you heard? I had the same experience at my dealer in Boston where they proactive suggested listening to some amazing Rockport speakers : - ) Goodwin's High End - Rockport Technologies - High End Loudspeakers
  8. Do you plan to audition the devialet as well? I know it wouldn't fit your requirements with existing equipment...I would be interested in your impressions...
  9. Interested to see what you decide!
  10. Hi, I have a SuperUniti and here is how it's set up - for the same reasons (great sound and simplicity. - the system must meet WAF requirements): MacMini: headless running Roon with iPads as the controllers and has my library locally stored (I have a server version of the Mini with. 2TB onboard) - previously was running iTunes/Audirvana+ in integrated mode which worked very well. (I'm experimenting with HQ Player integrated with Roon to see if there is a worthy sound quality difference, but since the SuperUniti does its own jitter removal and 16x upsampling/filtering not sure it's making a difference but still experimenting) Mac Mini is connected to SPDIF input using Audiophilleo 1. This combo has been sounding awesome. Interesting point is that Naim use the Audiophilleo technology in their DACv1 so that has a direct USB input, that would be a nice upgrade on the SuperUniti at some point and remove the need for the Audiophilleo box. One limitation I have on the Audiophilleo is that it does not support DSD128. I would get the. Audiophilleo with the DSD upgrade or find an alternative. I suspect the SuperUniti is good enough to not need a high end converter in reality but I'm not sure and the AP does a nice job. I also have AirTunes for convenience, through the optical to slink into SuperUniti. The SQ of AirTunes is limited as you say, so this is only used for parties as a cheap multi-room system (Naim also has a multi-room capability now with SuperUniti so some day maybe I'll do more with this). I could live with only those 'boxes' but I also have a turntable and power supply box.. I really like the SuperUniti sound and musicality - I have Goldenear Triton 2 speakers, which sound great to me and are easily driven by the SuperUniti 80 WPC without needing a bigger amp. So technically, at its core a three box solution, but one of the boxes simply hangs off the back and you can't see it. MacMini -> Audiophilleo 1 w/ Pure Power (2boxes technically)-> SuperUniti - > speakers. With Roon things have become even more simple, because it has Tidal integration and can stream to other endpoints. And meets the usability requirement for my wife....I also like iRadio integration on the SU.. My wife and I have spent long sessions playing DJ with this setup, the SuperUniti can handle all file types well even some of our crappy downloads. And AAC stuff..
  11. too funny, I"m really getting my mac mini into fine shape thanks in no small part to superdad, so I was the one who had a little heart attack : - )
  12. well you could buy the vinyl for just the download - since its about the same as teh HD Tracks cost ($17 or so). I'm crazy so I bought both to check out the differences, still listening - the HD tracks is much more compressed but also still sounds good. I might be crazy enough to buy the 'mastered for itunes' version and compare all three against the vinyl, but I think that would end up driving me to the nut house. Playing the files via a Mac Mini with my Superdad powered UpTone Audio linear PSU which is sounding great : - )
  13. I bought the vinyl, which comes with mp3 download ripped from vinyl. Here is what the DR Database says, much better than the other downloads including HD Tracks. Winder why they wouldn't do a lossless vinyl rip vs. MP3? mp3 download that comes with the vinyl: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Analyzed folder: Ryan Adams - Ryan Adams (2014) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR Peak RMS Filename ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR13 -0.69 dB -15.38 dB 1. I love seeing him live very good sound.
  14. Hey Superdad, I'm new here and would like your advice on how to do this? I have a Mac Mini Server (latest version). I think it sounds very good already but would like to explore improvements, have great Naim kit and speakers that are very revealing and have been having fun doing upgrades.... If this is best taken offline my email is [email protected]. Kind regards, Marty
