    Correction -- I tried to use XLD ... but when I checked the rips are still 16 bit-wide. I, too, am headed back to iTunes.

    No matter how many cores your processor has, set XLD to use only 1 thread! I am using XLD only for high-definition (24 bit) CDs. I use iTunes for everything "normal". I also use an external CD/DVD drive on the off chance that the drive gets "worn out". (I'm ripping about 1000+ CDs.) And do use the CDDB database.
