  1. Thank you. Those options seem quite expensive just for the luxury of having the server in another location. Would the vortex box be able to utilize a USB wifi dongle to connect to the web for the rip verification and cover art (I don't have a lan in the area near my audio gear)?
  2. what would be a good example of a streamer device to get the data transmitted remotely? THX
  3. I am still in the planning / research stages of my music server journey and am wondering what else I would need to buy to interface with the basic VortexBox? it seems like this product is about as inexpensive as it gets with good storage capacity but I need to know what other components I will need to get a signal (digital or analog) to my receiver. THX
  4. Will do. I will buy it over the holiday weekend and start ripping, thanks!
  5. I am beginning to enter the world of digital audio storage and need recommendations on ripping software to get my CD collection on to a hard drive in a loss-less format. I will likely start out with a small playlist stored on a Sansa Zip in FLAC for playback but in the future I would like to have my entire music collection on a drive / server so I might as well begin the ripping now. Are there any good programs out there that are either free or cheap that have a reputation for maintaining an accurate copy of the original that will also sync to the internet to store album and artist information? Thx
  6. Thanks for the answers. I did some research and for the first time in my life may actually keep a project simple. i found good reviews on the DAC built into the clip zip (it can output digitally via the USB btw, so I can always upgrade if need be...it is meant to interface with most automobiles via USB) and it also has EQ functions. So I decided to go with cambridge audio s20 speakers as they are sealed and will perform better with close rear wall placemat and should also respond to EQ better. For now I am just going to run the clip into a Dayton audio 50w x 2 t-amp and be done with it. total cost should be around $250 and sound better than most audio setups in an infant's room
  7. How about something like this? Topping TP30 Would it read an MP3 player properly via USB?
  8. I guess that was one of my questions. Would the media player be "seen" as a computer to a USB dac ? I would like to keep the DAC & amp total under $175.
  9. I am assembling a budget system for my newborn's room. Space is a premium so I would like to use the Sansa Clip Zip to store uncompressed files on, then run it through a DAC & Amp (or an integrated DAC / AMP) to power a pair of Pioneer SP-BS22-LR speakers. Will any of the USB DAC products work to pull the audio file from the media player through the USB or do they only work from a computer? Loud, critical listening will not be a goal for this setup, I just want good quality at a good price. any suggestions? THX
  10. The mini Mac may be the most economial choice which raises the question...how do their lower cost PC alternatives perform in this role?
  11. I currently own hundreds of CDs and am to the point where I need to organize them...ideally by lossless ripping to some system that will also allow high quality playback through my audio system. I see that many turn-key units cost several thousand dollars which is out of my price range. Are there any storage / playback systems available in the $750 and below range? I am not against building one, but it will need to be neat and contained in a box the size of a typical audio component (i.e. I am not willing to have my old tower PC sitting next to my gear). Any thoughts on options? THX
