  1. Yes, iTunes is enabled. At this point Amarra shuts down the computer before starting iTUNES
  2. Yes iTunes library is enabled. that is my database
  3. I am running 3.0.3. I do not understand what you mean by turning off extra "process". I am running only Amarra file playing software - nothing more
  4. For some months I have been experiencing difficulty with Amarra 3.0 running on a recent MacBook Pro (Solid State disc). Amarra runs fine. However when shut the program down and restart it will sometimes shut the computer down. Sometimes I can restart it after several times, sometimes not. I have done stuff like clearing Amarra preferences (the routine in the Extras folder). Does any other see this problem?
  5. In the meantime I got a Peachtree DAC-IT and that seems to work fine. Thanks for the suggestion. BTW I read in a review that the Airplay function on the AirDAC did not function well - I forget the magazine but it was a well reputed magazine.
  6. I have an Apple TV. It has no analog outputs. It has only digital - specifically HDMI, Toslink, and Ethernet. OK there is a micro USB as well but that is intended for service only.
  7. Goal: To enable my friends with iOS devices to play music wirelessly (Airplay) over my analog system. My analog system includes an Ayre Preamp and an Ayre USB DAC (which is, by definition, exclusive to my NAS storage). My Understanding: Apple TV provides the functionality to wirelessly stream digital files. It has digital outputs (HDMI and Toslink). Therefore a DAC is necessary. The connection, therefore, is Apple TV wirelessly to the source iOS device, and by the Toslink (or HDMI) to a DAC. If the above is correct, I need a DAC. As we are talking MP3 and MP4 files this can be a low cost DAC (but surely not as low as the Toslink to RCA adapters at $25 which must be, I presume, a low cost DAC). 1. DAC recommendations for this application? 2. A recommendation for another way of achieving my goal??
  8. The Squeezebox app that comes with the Synology Diskstation (Packages) does not require that iTUNES is running. In combination with the "Squeezepad" app that enables Squeezebox to be run from an i-PAD it is a genial solution. Works very well. The DAC in a Squeezebox Duet does remarkably well. However you can not serve through a high resolution audiophile DAC. Solid, and requires only that the Diskstation is running - no computer needed. I use the DS412+ which has the fastest processor available in "domestic" units and have been very pleased with it. Synology provide some really good software packages as standard with their device.
  9. 1. The quirky nature of iTUNES. Perhaps i could have expressed this better as needing to do things the iTUNES way. Example 1: I created a folder "Music" on the DS and pointed my MAC-Mini to that. That was where I first created my music server library. But, of course, it is not an iTUNES library. The only way I could fix that was to create an iTUNES library and then use "Add to Library" to convert over. There is a merge function but I was nervous to use it. Example 2: If at some along the way the computer cannot find the "music" on an iTUNES library, then it defaults to whatever library it can find (so far as I could tell). I accidentally loaded 200 GB onto my Mac-Mini music library (not the DS) because I was working from Album view which was still being populated from my RIPS. It is a bit of a puzzle, to me at least, as to how iTUNES manages its libraries. 2. Thanks for your advice which I will investigate at some time during this week-end.
  10. I have recently completed the creation of a 1TB library of classical music by: 1. Ripping the CD's with XLD. 2. Downloading whatever metadata came from the CCB library before the rip. 3. Using "Add to Library" to add the CD to the iTUNES library. 4. Editing the metadata with a protocol that I established according to my needs. 5. I created an iTUNES library on a Synology Diskstation. I use the Squeezebox server that comes with the Synology software package to run two remote Squeezeboxes. I also use Amarra with an Ayre QSB 9 DSD, and control a headless MAC-Mini via an iPAD and the Splashtop app (this part is still, for me, a pilot project). This above process sounds simple but along the way I learned a lot about the quirky nature of iTUNES. The #1 lesson I learned is only ever do anything from the high level menu in iTUNES. The forums on Computeraudiophile also helped me greatly in the creation of this library. In fact, I am not sure that I would have got where I have without the excellent assistance so gained. The "LAST" remaining hurdle that I have been UNABLE TO SOLVE is that I can only see the Diskstation library with one computer at a time. If I have one computer with iTUNE open and looking at the DS library then if I try to look at it with a second computer I get an error message that an *.itdb file is locked or I do not have permissions. An Internet search suggests that this is a well known issue and I have seen a couple of posts which suggest that it might be a Mavericks problem. The result is that one cannot play music through Amarra and edit the library from another computer at the same time. Homesharing does not solve the problem (at least I can't make it solve the problem). Does anybody out there know how to set up an iTUNES library on an external (NAS) system so that two computers can view the library at the same time?? That is what is needed to make iTUNES a true music server, at least in my set up which I do not guarantee is the appropriate or best set up!!! Thank you.
  11. Thanks. If I lose play counts, last play dates, and star ratings that would not be a big loss. Losing the cover art would be a pain, but survivable. If the tags remain intact, then I am in reasonable shape. Take care.
  12. Just when you thought I was gone away..... I have now acquired my MAC-mini and a NAS. During that time i have happily ripped over 200 CD's and edited the metadata. The advice that I gained from this forum, and especially Musicophile, was extremely useful. My consistent scheme (thank you for emphasizing consistency) is providing me with the overview that I want need in order to enjoy my music. Due to disc space I now have two iTUNES libraries. One is on my iMAC, and the other is on my MAC-Mini. I now need to create a new iTUNES library on the NAS that combines (consolidates) these two libraries into one, without losing the metadata edits. This task is not routine and has danger if you do it wrong, so far as I can tell. Can anyone help me with a proven method to successfully merge two libraries while keeping all the metadata edits? Thank you.
  13. Greetings, Musicophile. 1) I have now digitized about 150 CD's using iTUNES as the database manager. I believe that all things considered that is a good choice. 2) For the album view I have chosen, where applicable, to put the composer name first in the album name (or up to 2 or 3) - otherwise I put something else of importance on the CD. In album view the album name drives the order in which the albums are displayed (or at least that is the default, and I do not know whether there is a way around it). 3) I have stopped digitizing for a few days awaiting the arrival of a NAS, as I am about out of capacity on the iMAC. I am also getting a MAC-Mini to act as a dedicated server. 4) I have installed the Remote app on my iPAD and that appears to operate well with Amarra linked to iTUNES and in Amarra mode. Is that similar to that which you do, or do you have some other insight to add? Once again, thank you for your very useful comments on using iTUNES as the database manager.
  14. Ah, now I found the user manual - I missed it before. That will help a lot!! Take care, Musicophile Bob
  15. This is a deviation from the thread, but it would help me! 1. I just downloaded a demo version of Amarra. 2. At this point I do not have a DAC, other than a Squeezebox Duet 3. I presume that in "File" "Audio Device Preferences" that Amarra finds output devices which are then selected by moving the clock around. In this box I do not see the Squeezebox which is not surprising. When I instal a DAC can I expect to automatically see it in this box, or is there some other way to select output devices? 4. Do I presume correctly that the playback method is to add from (in this case) the iTUNES library to the play list in Amarra? That means, of course, that one cannot control the playback process over an iPAD or similar, but must have direct access to the computer? In other words, Amarra is not seamlessly integrated with iTUNES, and there is not a convenient remote control method for playing back music from the iTUNES library with Amarra? Bob
