  1. Oct 2013 two years later: I have the same problem, how to volume control (i.e. attenuate) two twotwo.6s in the AES3 digital domain, from an optical digital source (mac mini or TV or other) without resorting to analogue somewhere just so as to get volume control and without spending silly money to get it. I have the mac mini with optical in and out, but no volume control ability therein - unless I use analogue and it hurts having to use the RCA inputs. Anyway: today I had a chat with messrs Chris and Oliver at PMC who were both helpful. Apparently a PMC controller aimed at me is due out in early 2014 (so about three months away) whereas the recently announced Monitor Controller is (clearly) studio aimed (i.e. megabucks) Meanwhile Oliver has offered to send me an email with links to possible AES3 inline volume control solutions: nothing has arrived yet, so remains to be seen if I understood. During our conversation it occurred to me how they think "studio" and they see volume settings as something set and left - there is no concept of having to get off the sofa to go and adjust the volume .. like we did in the 50s and 60s. I hope they stick with us consumers. I haven't heard such great sound in years. Meanwhile I have ordered an AES3/EBU < Optical adapter from the USA. It doesn't offer volume control (attenuation) but does (I hope!) solve the problem of skipping from Consumer S/PDIF or Toslink to Professional AES3/EBU . So I will then have access to the PMC (Digital) XLR AES/EBU input, something I have yet to experience. My next mini project is to understand how and if I can use the balanced XLR analogue input.
