  1. Hi all, This will be a noob question. I just purchased some HiVi Swans H6 active standmounts. They are internally bi-amped, with Burr-brown DACs, and they have a range of input options (SE, Balanced XLR, coax, optical, WLAN, wifi, bluetooth). However, I just learned that they run the analog inputs through an ADC, then through their own DSP and DAC conversions. (This was a surprise - I own the Luxman DA-06 and am very fond of its signature) Anyway, I connected the speakers to my wifi network, and now that I am feeding them from my Mac's optical output and through wifi via my smartphone, I am wondering if these are 'true digital' outputs or whatever that means. Specifically, is my mac streaming zeros and ones directly from its hard drive to the speakers for them to process with the Burr-Browns, or is the mac actually performing some kind of DAC processing before outputting through its optical port? Similarly, with the app I am using on my phone to 'stream' files to the speakers via wifi, is it processing the digital data? I want to remove as many conversions as possible from the chain and ideally feed the speakers just zeros and ones. I am assuming my question has a very obvious answer, but I am in the dark. I am also wondering, with my AK DAP and it's optical output - is this an 'unprocessed' digital stream; is the DAP just acting as a transport?
  2. Yes, the TEAC was there only so that I could here another native dsd source. The comparison that I was most interested in was between the DA-06 and the Luxman D-06 player which has digital inputs ( I was considering using the optical out from my mac, though the D-06 will only reach 24/96, apparently ). The choice would play a huge role in how I listen to music in the future.... I was already heavily biased toward the no-physical-media route (except for the common urge to go vinyl again ). In the end the shop offered me a better deal on the DA-06, which was new, than on the player, which was a store demo model and more expensive as well. I am now trying to find more English language information on the DA-06, either officially from Luxman or someone`s diy version. I`ve sent an email to Luxman directly. I am very interested in people`s experiences with the filters and phase inversion.... David
  3. Well I took my laptop and my dac to a shop in central Tokyo yesterday to audition the DA-06 and do some comparison listening. I also listened to the TEAC ud501. . . Blown away by the DA-06, bought it and it was delivered today by Luxman themselves... My concerns in my initial post seemed less relevant once I heard the da-06. I was expecting subtle, nuanced. I was just floored. Pretty happy new Luxman owner. Next step, I think, is to go ahead and make a Mac Mini music server. . . d
  4. Thanks for the information. Sonore has posted an interesting spreadsheet with current (Feb 2014) hardware and software options for dsd : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgVhKcl_3lHfdFVyenBBNjNpQ2lieG81WGpqQTNfVUE#gid=0 For the Luxman DA-06, the comments section includes this: "DSD files from the MAC will be converted to DXD (352.8 kHz PCM) while ASIO driver with Windows will allow native DSD (1 bit) playback." Am I wrong in assuming this conversion in Mac is a compromise, and only the Windows platform allows for the the full potential of dsd? Or is native vs DoP just two ways to arrive at the same thing? I would love to hear from DA-06 owners. I`m taking my macbookpro and my current dac to a shop tomorrow to do some comparative listening... d
  5. I am about to purchase the Luxman DA-06 dac Computer Audiophile - Luxman DA-06 Review The sentence I wish to discuss is : "The USB input requires installation of the supplied device driver for use with a Windows PC. This ASIO driver enables playback of DSD content natively without using the DoP DSD over PCM standard." This ASIO driver, and apparently native dsd playback, is not available Mac OS, from what I can gather. I am unsure of the technicalities of native dsd vs DoP and am reading up on this now. I am (or was) planning to audition and buy the DA-06 this weekend. However, after watching this video interview with the Luxman guys themselves, I am concerned that I won`t be able to have native dsd playback on my Mac system : The video is in Japanese, but they both emphasize the Windows/ASIO native dsd functionality and comment that the ASIO driver is the superior way to use the DA-06. And they imply that DSD over PCM is a compromise. So, I am asking for feedback from this knowledgeable community regarding this issue : should I look for another dac or is this native-dsd playback only for Windows OS, across all devices? I am not in the mood to compromise because I am looking for a long-term, future-proof-as-possible dac. I could buy a cheap Windows pc to run my dsd music. I could install Windows on my Mac. Is there another option ? Help ! And thanks in advance. (Apologies if this has been covered previously) David
