  1. You know I have nort thought of that, but it may be the problem. When I get home this evening I will try them in my Computer to see. Thanks. Piinob
  2. Firefly, I do not know why it will not read them. One is part of a set of three, the other two in the set read just fine, but this one just doesn't read. The others are the same way in that they play in my CD players, just do not read for some reason or another. They could be somehow damaged that I do not detect. <br /> piinob
  3. Green, the software upgrade cured my eject problems. I still have about 6 CD's out of 1500 or so that the machine absolutely will not read. I plan to rip them to my Computer and transfer the files.
  4. I have an Olive 4HD. I have owned it for about 5 weeks now. When I first got it, it was a bit quirkiy with it's controls. I had to power down and reboot a couple of times. Just a hassel, no data loss or anything like that. Then about two weeks ago they did a software upgrade. It was as simple as pressing a few buttons on the touchscreen, and in about five minutes it was done. It all works much smoother now, and seems to rip faster, although that is probably just my own mis-perception. The sound has been great from day one. I have a Monarchy NM24 DAC which I have been using for about 18 months. It has been great but there is no question the Olive output just sounds better. I waited for quite a while for someone to do a test of the Olive. When they came out with the 4HD I decided to go ahead and jump. I am so glad I did.
  5. I have owned Carver gear since Bob Carver owned the company the first time. It is good stuff. I also own some other gear, McIntosh, Monarchy etc. The Carver does not in any way sound like the McIntosh, or the Monarchy. Nice stuff for the price, but not in the same league.
  6. You are correct tino, as is Tom. Be happy with your own choices and leave others to be happy with theirs.
  7. I don't know what numbers sound like, I just know what my ears like. I was one of the first to jump on the digital bandwagon when there were only 100 or so CD's available around the Dallas Ft. worth area. I have been doing CD's ever since. But two years ago I bought a Turntable and began buying used records. Folks thought I was nuts. But after they come and listen most will tell you that it just sounds more detailed. The numbers may not be there, but the sound is. That said I am still pursueing digital because eventually the bugs will be worked out. Just like the breakfast cereal sound is gone from vinyl. I do not require that you agree with me, just don't put your own preferences on me either. Remember, each of us is unique, just like everyone else!

    Tuning up MS OS

Yes, that is the one. It was designed and built by Mr. C. C .Poon. He is located in San Francisco, and a very nice man. He has a long history first as a designer, I think for Luxman, then as a reviewer, and finally setting out on his own. When the Benchmark first came out it was really getting rave reviews. I was reading reviews and already had a couple of his MOSFET amps. The reviewers who tested his DAC after the Benchmark all sold the Benchmarks and bought the review samples so I figured what the heck. If you watch you can get them for about $1050 from time to time. Anyway I am ready to jump here too. I have waited quite a while for someone to get their act together and offer a reqasonable package, but I think folks get carried away with prices. The Olive looked very promising but I have been following a forum on the Opus 4 for about 18 months and it is still pretty buggy software so I guess if I want it done right I will have to do it myself, in a manner of speaking. This website will enable that I can tell. I really am amazed at the civility here. So many forums are full of folks who take themselves and everything else so seriously. People here seem to be pretty laid back and friendly. A real breath of fresh air!

    Tuning up MS OS

Thanks Markr, Guess I should have been more specific. I have a computer that I have just replaced and thought I would reformat w/my copy of XP and try my hand at building the PC based server that Chris lists at the first of this excellent site. I currently have a Monarchy NM 24 DAC that I felt I could work in to this all. The PC itself is not real current, but from what I can tell it should suffice for a dedicated server. By reformatting I thought to clean up the accumulated garbage. I would expect that i would need to run some kind of anti virus while I am ripping and acquiring meta-data online. I will check out the link and see what i can learn. Thanks again.
  10. As I read on these many pages here and elsewhere, I note that people speak of "cleaning" or "tuning" the OS on windows machines. Things such as taking un-needed programs out of Config.sys, eliminating Outlook etc. For those of us trying to get a handle on all of this, how do we figure out what is needed, and what is just taking up un necessary space and cpu time? By the way, thanks Chris for this forum. And thanks to all the experienced guys who keep answering basic questions over and over for us new guys.
