  1. I'm sending mine out shortly. Any J. River users, with upgraded or V2 Vega, please start testing JRMC21 4xDSD over DoP as it was just implemented. Kudos to Matt and team for adding this right after I solely petitioned for it! DSD 256
  2. Experiments? Ok, but subjective. Archimago's Musings: MEASUREMENTS: Audiophile Sound and Operating Systems. (Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Fidelizer & JPLAY again!) I'm just really questioning the reality of the USB mods proposed here...vs cost of the Bega for example. I mean, upgrading the master clock, ok I can see that, but how much better do we need with the Vega? "Another signature feature of the Vega is its Femto Master Clock, which yields a spectacularly low 0.082 picoseconds"
  3. Try RiverMote or XPtunes for J. River control with iPhone. I use RiverMote but XPtunes give you a search feature too. Layout and response time go to RiverMote.<br /> <br /> Rivermote was coming out with a native plug (with search and other added features) but seems that lack of relational database in J. River is an issue. <br /> <br /> On the issue of remotes, I use UltraVNC on all PCs but the last thing I would want would be to have to access/control my media player; even over LAN, this simply is not really....fun.<br /> <br /> That's why I think J. River is light years ahead of iTunes.<br /> <br /> With their added Treemote feature, combined with Library Server, you can use any PC as a remote or stream client using the very same GUI on all PCs. <br /> <br /> I stream FLAC, uncompressed, to my in-laws and office over WAN using the same wonderful GUI. To me they all sound great, but the usability is drastically different across Foobar, MediaMonkey, Amarra, iTunes, & J. River. I'm an Apple fan too, but it never ceases to amaze me how bloated iTunes is and ultimately not feature-rich.<br />
  4. No major issues with mine for the last 6 months. If you use the USB on it, be aware they limited that to 44kHz. There were some reports of jitter issues with the Airport Express N version and a firmware mod is available for the NOVA. Hit AVS as signal path has a presence there and has posted regarding this.
  5. If I came off as harsh or less than collegial, I apologize. I'm trying push for a little for a little less "opinion" and "idea" and focus of matters of fact. We can collectively and accurately make assessments of objective reality if we gather empirical data and share it. Yet, everything we experience is subjective, our personal representations all differ, but if we communicate and dig a bit deeper and refine our positions and compare notes, we can compare thousands upon thousands of subjective experiences and form a pretty damn accurate picture of the world around us. This I believe is at the root of the deductive-inductive ebb & flow of scientific knowledge. I'm am positive that Gordon knows much more than I do about these matters, but I felt that his comments bordered on rhetorical dogma, that's my opinion ; ) That's fine, if you at least then say, "and hey read this here about this etc." Jonathan Catuccio
  6. How is audible? How is the character altered if the bits are under the audible threshold? I have read some stuff from Dan Lavry about very low amplitudes being audible, but that needs more review. Now if you mean by "using the volume control" as the Master then maybe because then one would be seriously attenuating when running internal digital volumes at 5-10%. Your statement is rather a blanket generalization and I would honest expect a little more scientific discussion from someone of your caliber. You mean understand the numbers behind all this, but you need to elaborate for me and many other readers here, rather than just qualitative exposition regarding the beliefs you hold. I'm being very specific: "Seems like some minor attenuation in something like EMU patchmix, if needed would not adversely affect the fidelity (while it may be in fact not bit-perfect)." You, unfortunately, are not. JC DVDdoug said: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=b62f59a82b520d846019b40ee7c32ad0&showtopic=65521&pid=584990&st=0entry584990 "When you attenuate, all of the lost data is at the "quiet end". So, even if you could keep the lost details/data, these details would be be attenuated below the "old" 1-bit level. (In fact, you can preserve the details if you use floating-point, but you're still not going to hear anything different.) Something similar happens with an analog volume control. The "lost details" fall-into the noise or below the threshold of audibility. So, you can digitally attenuate a signal 20 or 30 dB (or as much as you want), and you don't hear any "distortion". You can attenuate it 'till you're down to 1-bit remaining, which would be really lousy audio, but you won't hear anything anyway! However, if you re-amplify the signal (digitally or by turning-up the volume control on an analog amplifer) you might hear the effects, but you're probably not going to hear any ill-effects with normal adjustments (i.e. 10dB) at 24-bits."
  7. I can't get the Denmark 24/192 sample work in Media Center OR Foobar. Foobar says it is PCM, but what is BWF as noted on the site? I have to try another player like Media Monkey.<br /> <br /> Can you try these three apps, or have you?<br /> <br /> thanks<br /> DC
  8. Gordon, Are you saying if we lower a 32bit digital volume control to say 90%, we lose information? I thought that for every 6db of attenuation, 1bit is lost. Given the above scenario, what is actually "lost" if a DSP is set to use 32bit for playback and uses a 32bit volume control. Seems like some minor attenuation in something like EMU patchmix, if needed would not adversely affect the fidelity (while it may be in fact not bit-perfect). DC
  9. I'm playing 24/176.4 in MC with no problems. Sounds like you need to configure the DSP in MC possibly....<br /> <br /> Patchmix session is set to 176.4mHz and so is MC. Wave or ASIO work fine. <br /> <br /> DC
  10. Something isn't configured properly in your system, especially if you are playing back wav files in MC. I can't remember if MC can be select for 176kHz or you would have to resample to 192. <br /> <br /> I could record some vinyl at 24/96 (Lavry AD10) or 24/192 (1212M) and test them as wavs.<br /> <br /> Stick with it, and maybe post in the forums over there. We'll figure it out. Sounds like file associations are defaulting to RealPlayer for some reason; what's the association set as in Windows? I too would probably cyber-gag if Real Player opened up on me like that ; )<br /> <br /> DC
  11. What's the problem? Your DAC can handle and so should the Lynx hardware. Does MC not offer that sample rate natively? <br /> <br /> DC
  12. Chris, If we attenuate with a 32bit internal volume control aren't we losing 1bit per every 6db. I fail to see what is really lost given the amount the bits we start with on most recordings. Frequencies reporucxtion isn't changing, and amplitude isn't changing relatively between freqs. So why is bit-perfect touted as superior. I doubt that anyone would notice a 10db digital attenuation applied via something like EMU Patchmix of J. River volume control. DC
  13. Media Monkey should simply not be a reference player if this is possible simply be renaming a file during playback. You're talking about blowing tweeters at high volumes.....you know that J. River won't modify a tag (for currently playing file) until playback is stopped. <br /> <br /> DC
  14. Since your using Windows, you have the option to use J. River media Center as a player and organizer (iTunes in its shadow is a mere mortal . The M-Audio cards are nice but driver support (updates) has always been lacking. I used to own the 24/96 'back in the day' , so don't get me wrong - good card. I and other Windows users are consistently impressed with the EMU cards for build quality, drivers, and great software (Patchmix). Head-Fi & HyrdrogenAudio are other 'old' forums with a ton of pertinent info. What kind of tablet? My Lenovo x61 has pretty good audio. If you feel its not up to par there are USB solutions from EMU & TurtleBeach. iTunes, EAC, and J. River can rip lossless (J. River has most options by default - easiest way to get secure rips, but EAC can be configured more). dc
