I see. In my case it just happened to be a coincidence, and I was using round numbers. I actually retired with 17 years of govt service. My total retirement benefit was reduced by a proportional amount. Also, during that 17 years my compensation was about 60 percent of what it would have been had I stayed in private practice. My colleagues told me I was nuts to give up my business salary to work in the public sector. Now, that the economy is down a bit they complain about that I'm being enriched at their cost. Can't win. In Minnesota we have a fiscal disparities tax program that requires rich counties to share their income with those who have less. It isn't popular with everyone but it helps to address some of the financial pain out state. As young people leave the farm to work in the cities the average age of rural America has risen and the available of working age population has shrunk. I wasn't looking for a pat on the back. I was simply explaining my belief that I have a broad perspective on income inequality and the attitudes of people on both ends. I spent 20 years in government working with and administering programs for the other 75%, I am well aware of their problems and the causes. He made some changes and the US is MORE livable for a great many people. Give Trump a year in office before you make any judgement about whether he is constructive or destructive. I think most people are going to be disappointed.

As a retired bureaucrat I can tell you that many agencies work tirelessly to maintain necessary and valued services to the public, despite shrinking budgets.
