  2. Hi there, on amazon i found a neat gadget, that replaces a USB cable between a - say - computer and a DAC (for quite a long distance) http://www.audioengineusa.com/w1_home.php seems to have rather good reviews (around the www) ... - has anybody here tried this device? - how is its sonic quality? - how "stable" is it? anything more you care to share or any thoughts? cheers al

    E-MU 0404

david, i did measure consumption of the 0404usb ... and it came in at 3.3w withouth 48v phantom ... and about 4.something with phantom. hope these values help you designing a cheapo portable supply ... my guess is that with 48v on you still will get north of 2hrs worth of usage cheers al

    E-MU 0404

I just slipped 4 rechargeable AA batteries (1.2V nominal each, 1.3V eff.) into a pvc tube (the blue ones, for water ducts) ... and voila instant 5.3 or so volts the plug for the power supply is a standard plug - easily obtained at homecenter et al... so i spliced that one in ... I get about 3 hrs out of a set of 4x2800mah AAs bass seems more controlled, somewhat tighter ... but not really earthshattering different. cheers al
  5. looks like it has been taken down by a 3rd party ... if they had done it themselves there would be at least some kind of "news" or so ... right
  6. my advice would also be group 1 ... and here particularly the EMU 0404 (its as ugly as they come) ... but it is one of the few USB DACs that can play 24-96 and 24-192 files ... I would hate to lose that ability, once you heard hi-res music, there is no way back! ... (i doubt it will sound better or worse on 44.1/16 than others in this group ... but the hi-res benefit is easy worth 50% of the emu's price (180 buck on amazon)) best of luck al
  7. ... for all the folks with problems with the 0404's ASIO drivers???? http://www.aqvox.de/Asio-USB-Audio-installation-e.htm supposedly an audiophile solution ... donno if you can access hi-res music through this any thoughts? cheers al
  8. here's a cheep way to get very clean power ... I measured the 0404 and it draws 3.4w per hour (with 48v phantom power off) ... so I put 4 rechargeable 2800 Mah AA batteries (those are around 1.4v each) into a tube of blue, "water" pvc pipe of 20mm diameter), all "looking" in the same direction (serial) ... they measured out at around 5.8V x 2.8Ah = 16.24 w/h for a full 4.8 hours of DAC fun .... (lets be conservative here and say 3.5-4 hours). then I epoxied a contact exiting to a cable in both end caps (the one on the nose, being "+" ... the one on the rear being "-") ... the cables end in an identical plug that goes to the rear of the dac (instead of the normal power supply) so voila ... instant CLEAN 5V DC for the DAC ... the tube, cables, end caps and plug were below 1 buck ... this mod also makes the 0404 work in the deepest woods .... and thats hard to beat, right? :0) cheers, Al
  9. ... for fixing a "regular" living room ??? where to start ... any chance of you describing the process or giving any sequential tips/tricks cheers al
  10. thx, claudius ... that was a very constructive post - something along the line I hoped for ... I will get into the whole matter deeper (the book and SW you mention) ... any other thoughts viable for a home setting? herzlichen dank und lG! Al
  11. Hi there, what are your thoughts on doing a microphone measurement from your listening place of your audio system ... and (after knowing the correction curve of the mic) applying EQ to even things out We all know rooms have tremendous impact and can amplify/swallow frequency bands without problems ... EQing seems like a logical step to counteract this ... Here for a couple of Qs that pop up from top of mind How poor (or good) are the standard EQs that come with - say - foobar ...? do they just impact the frequency band they should or will there be any neg. impact to other bands (phase shifts, etc...) are any 3rd party EQ plug ins available that are better? is there any SW available that allows for a reading of your room - identifying any frequ. problems? why is there so (rel.) little info available ... it looks like if you are a REAL audiophile, you have to frown upon EQs ...? has anybody done any longer term listening session (before/after)? open minded audiophile wants to know your thoughts in a HOME setting. cheers al
  12. Chris, i accept and respect your opinion - you have obv. Done more testing than me... Did you also do some ABX testing? We all know our mind can be very powerful... Also, what is the rationale behind a SSD sounding superior? Is there any consensus on a rationale? Thx for any information, Al
  13. i see ... hmmm ... what does drive vibration do to my 0s and 1s? ... my browser comes on wheater the fan is spinning or no - EVERY TIME - so there arent any bits lost... arent those old fashoned CDPlayers way worse, they need to do real time error correction of a scratched disc (as opposed to a DAC that is fed the already checksum-checked .flac file)??? even if those things should influence (which I do doubt) arent there any (imho smarter) software solutions available? I seem to recall that foobar allows you to force it to load a whole track into memory an play it form there ... cost: *cero* my point is still that SSD is very unefficient, esp. for any highres music ...(again, I am talking about hobby-applications ... a multi million dollar studio that needs to have all bases covered is obv. a different pair of shoes) also ... on dirt-cheap netbooks, there are quite a few that allow the fan to be forced off by software-settings ... cost: *cero* I get the distinct feeling the $400.00 x ft speakercable snakeoil vendors are now moving into computer audio territory ;o) (no insult meant, not directed to anybody particular posting here) cheers al ps: yeah ... I AM CHEAP ;-)
  14. streaming audio from a computer to a DAC does not call for SSD (as a matter of fact nearly all of their benefits go unused for audio serving) ... just get a good traditional HDD ... and save the money for good hi-res downloads... SSDs are great, but they offer very little advantage over a trad. HDD for serving audio ... your bottleneck is your USB or spdif interface ... any decent HDD has a bandwidth many times that of a USB port ... to put it in an analogy ... you have a porsche which is stuck in first gear ... and to make it go faster you put a supercharger on the engine (while leaving the gearbox untouched) cheers al
