  1. Hi. Thanks for the reply. I read Chris’s glowing review on JPLAY iOS. I wonder if you could give us more detail on the StreamUnlimited issue with using JPLAY iOS for gapless playback, whether it is resolved, and whether there is a solution for dCS products to play gaplessly. Thx!
  2. Just FYI, seems like while Mosaic and MinimServer work gaplessly, JPLAY and MinimServer does not (on the latest versions of dCS).
  3. Ok interesting. Just found a thread on the dCS forums saying that “dCS only supports MinimServer” as UPnP server. Wondering if your test was using the Antipodes running MinimServer or some other UPnP server. Also: Do you have a way to reproduce your gapless issue? Or is it more of a “sometimes it has a glitch sometimes not” kinda thing?
  4. I tested Mosaic’s UPnP gapless behavior, and I think I didn’t have a problem, but it was just a trial with a few tracks (playing Jean-Michel Jarre’s Oxygene if you must know… :) ). The way I picture this is there are two components in Mosaic: A- The UPnP browser/controller (the Mosaic version of JPLAY), and B- The UPnP renderer that would get the queue to play and actually play it. If this separation is correct, shouldn’t there be a gapless issue in Mosaic? Maybe there is and I just didn’t bump into it yet?
  5. Wondering how the queue works, meaning: is JPLAY sending the full queue to the UPnP renderer or is it sending it piecemeal? Asking in relation to gapless playback.
  6. Ok I see. So if I understand correctly, what I could do is: 1- Run MinimServer on my mac (which I am already doing) 2- Use JPLAY iOS on my iOS device to see the library MinimServer is serving PLUS my faves from TIDAL and Qobuz 3- With the iOS app select something to play back to my Rossini UPnP “input” The part I am confused about is what piece of software is “physically” picking up the data from MinimServer and rendering into the UPnP pipe in the Rossini? Is it the Rossini itself? Or is the data going THROUGH my iOS device to the Rossini? The way I use MinimServer today is via dCS’s Mosaic iOS app: MinimServer serves the files and Mosaic (running inside the Rossini network card) streams it to the DAC. There’s no data flow the iOS device. So the way I am interpreting the way JPLAY iOS works is it possibly tells the Rossini UPnP renderer “this is the url for the file you need to play” and the Rossini itself fetches it from MinimServer? Additionally, I imagine JPLAY iOS caches the entire local+TIDAL+Qobuz library’s metadata (at least the basic metadata) in the iOS device? Is this correct? Thank you!
  7. I have been a Roon lifetime subscriber since July 2015. I love Roon and what it does, but in case the Harman purchase destroys it, I want to have a plan B. I am trying to understand JPLAY and what it does, but frankly I am finding it rather obscure. What is JPLAY Femto? Is this similar to Roon Core? How does it work and how can it connect to a DAC? What about JPLAY for iOS? Is this just an iOS renderer? Would appreciate if someone can point me to a clear, concise lay of the land. Thx.
  8. A very kind soul shared with me the MFSL version. Thank you! I've listened to these three versions: A- MFSL (16/44 rip) B- 1997 remaster (16/44 CD rip) C- Recent remaster (Acoustic Sounds, 24/48, Qobuz has the same) Equinoxe Part 2 is a great way to assess since it is more quiet and tonally very rich. MFSL (A) is the quietest and the highest DR (10.6), then 1997 is louder (DR 10.3), and finally the hi-res version is loudest and with lower DR (10.1). The DR differences are not significant, but the volume is so need to adjust. There's a purity of tone and elegance to the MFSL that is not quite there in the other two. They are all quite enjoyable, but like Oxygene, I would give the nod to the MFSL.
  9. Very interesting! I can see your point.
  10. I can speak more authoritatively about Oxygene than Equinoxe (but I expect to be the same for the latter as they were produced a year or so apart). Oxygene digital: Best is MFSL CD. I own the 24/48 (purchased from HDTracks a while back) and I don’t think it sounds as good. Also have a more or less original CD, also similar but not as good as the MFSL CD. Keep in mind that the MFSL version was likely done over 28 or so years ago - the analog tape has most likely deteriorated somewhat, so the new-ish 24/48 transfer might be handicapped by that. Oxygene vinyl: I have the original release Polydor (US) and Dreyfus (France) as well as a japanese release. Of those I think the Dreyfus is the best. I don’t have the MFSL vinyl for this, I would like to have it but it is pretty expensive. The japanese version is touted as great but I think the Dreyfus sounds better. Equinoxe digital: I have the HDTracks 24/48 as well as the original CD. I don’t think there’s a lot of difference, but I would like to listen to the MFSL version which I suspect beats those two just like in the Oxygene case. Equinoxe vinyl: I only have a version that belonged to my brothers - an Argentinian pressing! The title is Equinoccio! It’s not great. I have both a japanese and Dreyfus pressings coming so I might add to this once I get them. Thank god for Discogs!!!
  11. I was rather surprised how different the various digital releases of these sound, actually. These are amongst the most important music for me personally, so I am a bit obsessive about them… :)
  12. Both Oxygene and Equinoxe are masterpieces. Amazing. Also gorgeous on vinyl. In all cases the various releases (digital and analog) sound remarkably different, which is a bit surprising to me since these are purely electronic instruments, by which I mean I would have expected to have less of a tonal sensitivity to a synthesized sound than a “real” sound like a voice or acoustic instrument.
  13. I have fallen back into JMJ's spell (again!). I own what is possibly all of the digital versions of Oxygene, and also most vinyl versions (although I am missing the MFSL vinyl, but it is sooo expensive). Of the digital versions, I would say the MFSL is the best. Of the vinyl versions I prefer the original Dreyfus (the Japanese version, which is highly regarded, does not sound as corporeal to me). I am now improving my collection of Equinoxe releases. I own a few digital versions, but I am chasing the MFSL one. Given Oxygene is best there, I wonder if people have a view on the MFSL release of Equinoxe on Ultradisc. Any insights/comments/recommendations/etc/etc/etc about JMJ are super welcomed! Thx.

I run a NUC10i7 with 32gb RAM, 500gb NME SSD (system and Roon db), and 4tb SSD internal storage (music). I have it in my office away from my listening room. One advantage of running a standard NUC is you can set the BIOS to use the CPU's maximal speed - it will result in the fan running at times. This is useful if you're using DSP (eg I upsample and do DSD>PCM in Roon when sending to my Schiit headphone DAC/amp). Setting the NUC to high speed makes it run hotter which will make it throttle down in a fanless case. I believe the Nucleus BIOS is not set to run at max speed.

    Hi, miguelito,

I'm setting up Roon-NUC 11 i7 with ROCK with the 32GB RAM & M.2 SSD (but the music library will be on an USB 20TB HD.

In addition to tweaking the fan setting, did you disable any BIOS options in order to throttle back CPU needs?  But more importantly, did you disable any BIOS options that seemed to improve the sound?  If so, what were they?

    Cheers, -Mike (mrmb)

      Just saw this...

I in fact made sure the BIOS settings are for max performance. My NUC is in my office so there's no electrical noise anywhere close to the audio system. The fan runs when it wants and that's alright.

I have tried to hear differences from servers running over the network over RAAT, and I have never heard a sound difference.

This is different if your NUC is close to your stereo and you're using USB to play - in this case there are a lot more subtleties.

As for networking, I have a dCS Rossini Apex+clock. It is connected to the network via an Ethernet-SFP (ie optical) bridge, with the bridge powered by a linear power supply (and Ultracap LPS-1).

      Hi miguelito,

I just noticed that I failed to reply to your kind response.

I did get my NUC up and running quite nicely.

I've enjoyed reading you posts and threads on the dCS forum.  I too owned a Rossini.  However, I went in the opposite direction that you did.  Specifically, I moved from dCS to EMM Labs and a DV2 DAC.

While auditioning a Rossini master clock, I learned of the new Apex upgrade to the Rossini. The clock added sonically. But it wasn’t what I would term a huge step-up -- i.e., one that I just couldn’t live without. At that point, pricing became paramount!

In round numbers, the Rossini master clock was a $10K upgrade and the Apex was similar in price. For me, adding $20K to a $20+K DAC was at best, questionable. I coupled this pricing, with the fact that the Rossini was beneath the Vivaldi stack both price wise and apparently sonic wise. This fact left me wondering what I would be missing by not owning the dCS flagship!?! I did however know that I wasn’t missing the the cost of doubling a $46.5 K Vivaldi DAC, by adding the Vivaldi master clock and its upsampler & cabling!

With those facts in mind, I learned of the EMM DV2 DAC and the EMM NS1 streamer. I contacted the dCS distributor and borrowed a NS1 and DV2. After the A/B audition with my Rossini & clock, I kept the EMM combo and jettisoned the Rossini.

Whether my EMM combo would have beat the newer Rossini Apex upgrade, I don’t know. More importantly however, I didn’t care.

Not dumping another ~$20K on a $20+K DAC, let alone contemplating more than doubling that amount on the flagship Vivaldi stack, left me and my wallet happy.

Additionally, I am really enjoying the EMM combo. It provides what I would describe as a very listenable and muscial middle of the road between my previous Lampizator DAC's (the Big7 and Golden Gate) and dCS.  Whether my EMM combo can be beat by MSB, dCS, Lampi, Wadax, Linn et al., I don’t care. Because, I’m happy to get away from the DAC add this (clock/upsampler/power supply) and doubling the price of the DAC itself et al. conveyor line; as well as the (Lampi) Tube DAC hassles of trialing and finding and rolling very costly new tubes, that I found to have premature failure rates.

I'm pretty sure I read of your problems with EMM and the DAC you owned.  Hopefully, I continue to have great luck with my DV2.  I do however, miss the dCS forum and you and the other great, helpful folks on the site.  EMM Labs has nothing like it and their attention to their customer base doesn't seem to equal dCS's.  For me, time will tell however....

      Thanks again for your assistance!

  15. Is this running in Airport 1 or 2 mode?
