  1. Not to mention the lossless compression.
  2. Reminds me of Hobbits who, was well as having problems with Trolls, '...liked to have books filled with things that they already knew, set out fair and square with no contradictions."
  3. You missed the point, probably intentionally. The issue is not only DACs. It goes without saying that you're entitled to spend your money where you want. My opinion bothers you: noted. Anyway, I'm talking about the time, effort and expense of people who can actually improve audio reproduction i.e. engineers.
  4. But there are areas that can bring big improvements. There are areas that are worth the time, effort and expense, but I strongly believe DACs are the wrong place to be spending those resources. Thing is; there are big margins in selling DACs and those margins become astronomical for certain cables. Once you can convince people that you don't need to produce evidence that your product as any better than another ("just use your ears!") then chasing margins becomes the right business decision and genuinely improving sound reproduction in people's rooms is not.
  5. If a file has been backed-up and hasn't changed why would you waste space on another copy of it? If a file that shouldn't change is different from the backup then that needs investigating and not overwriting.
  6. Unfortunately it's not. ECC protected solid-state memory or multiple copies and a good backup scheme are the only answers. Btw, if your backup scheme has overwritten a good backup with a corrupted one and you have no other way to recover it then it's not a good backup scheme. Files that should never change unless they have been corrupted should be handled accordingly.
  7. On the contrary. Rather than heating the debate up, if it can be shown that there is a genuine improvement, it would kill the debate stone dead. And I for one would be very happy that we could all benefit from better audio reproduction.
  8. That make sense but at the same time wouldn't move things forward in terms of this debate since, of all the possible explanations for reported differences, 'we hear genuine differences that cannot be measured or identified under controlled conditions' would have be one of the less likely. The most likely explanations are unpopular with the same people railing against Dennis now.
  9. So you're saying that others may be able to reverse-engineer the development of complex hardware from measurements and that's why the measurements aren't published? This argument is very weak indeed. Btw, I don't identify as a sceptic and I don't believe engineering rigour equates to negativity. So I would point to a lot of posts...
  10. Does the definition of 'troll' now include anyone who subscribes to and voices a theory that certain people don't care for?
  11. Ah! If you want to use JRemote then that's going to be your problem because currently the views can't be customised. That's a feature I would really like because my classical collection doesn't look sensible under JRemote due to the tagging method I'm using. The JRemote author is active on the JRiver forum so the more people that hassle him the better... The Interact forum is your best bet because the JRiver developers as well as experienced users respond on there directly.
  12. No, it's not possible to have two libraries open at the same time. You could have your music in three separate libraries but I would recommend only having one. The only reason I can think of that you would want to split your music into separate libraries would be if you had such a colossal collection that it was significantly degrading the performance of JRMC (very unlikely in my experience). By managing your tagging and creating custom views of your collection you can easily segregate your collection and only see what you're interested in at any point in time, all within a single library. It's very flexible like that. If you need more help doing that I would recommend posting to the JRiver Interact forum.
  13. All that grinning and winking reads incredibly creepy. I'm curious why - if Head-Fi is regarded as a lost cause - why these nefarious rotters at Hydrogen Audio might be plotting to subvert the happy burg of Computer Audiophile (of all places). Why does a thread like this have to start at Defcon 1 on the paranoia scale and then only get worse? 'Extremist'? Really?
