  1. They do but with " ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by applicable law " . I think it's some kind of open source thing.
  2. I'm limiting myself to what will fit on the 500 GB Mac Mini drive just for aesthetic reasons. I'll plug in an external drive to make a back-up but that's about it. In any event, many of you might be able to distinguish FLAC from AIFF in blind fold tests on your system but I doubt I could on mine. I totally agree with you about the remote - it's actually driving the issue for me.
  3. File size matters to me so AIFF is out. Sound quality is something I'm still trying to get a handle on which is why I'm curious about your quote below from another thread. If this means what it seems to why bother with Windows?
  4. ... so JRiver has no issues with FLAC on a Mac, correct? I understand Audirvana is better sound (at the moment) than JRiver on a Mac but I wonder if the difference would be noticeable on my equipment (Arcam rDAC --> NAD 3120 --> B&W685's)?[h=2][/h]
  5. which specific Mac players do not "do well" with FLAC when running independently of iTunes. I've not heard that before and it might influence my intended choice of JRiver on the Mac Mini in particular. so... do tell Paul, please...
  6. ... given the trade off between perfection and the convenience of adjusting individual song volume by the iPeng remote - I'll probably leave the SBT at 90% ! :-)
  7. thanks for clarifying ... from the sounds of it it would probably be easier for me to do it on my Linux laptop. I'm still wondering about the file naming conventions. Any ideas on that?
  8. yup... that's what I was worried about, I remember reading something about it but couldn't remember whether it was actually the SBT they were talking about. thanks.
  9. I was wondering if you lose any quality by reducing Squeezebox Touch output volume? Should I leave it at 100% and adjust listening volume in the amp instead?
  10. good to know.... thanks. and you did this on a Mac, right ?
  11. As I understand it, they are equivalent but FLAC is more universally accepted. Am I losing anything at all by choosing FLAC ? I don't think so. Do you know anything about ripping with JRiver on a Mac ?
  12. ... you mean they're not lurking and hanging on our every word? :-) seriously though, it's a good idea!
  13. I need to rip the majority of my CD collection to FLAC files and wonder about the relative merits of doing that in JRiver on the Mac Mini? I won't have a connected display other than for the initial setup after which I want to run it from the JRemote app on my iPad. My only other option would be to do the ripping on a Linux laptop with CDparanoia in Asunder. Can JRiver on a Mac do ripping at all? Can JRiver rip FLAC files using the JRemote app on an iPad? Will the resulting quality be noticeably worse than that from CDParanoia under Linux? Would it be noticeably worse quality than XLD? By noticeably worse I mean a blind fold listening test as opposed to a forensic lab statistic that can not be identified in a blind fold listening test. Lastly, what rules of thumb should I follow for naming conventions? Hopefully I will only have to do this all once! :-)
  14. My DAC has the power switch in the back and the guy in the store mentioned it would get better with use ... so on it stays I guess.
  15. I don't have kids or a car so I figure I have more "carbon credits" than I can use in this life. :-) Would it be easier on my Arcam rDAC to leave it on or turn it off when not in use ? The SBT stays on because I like having a clock in the room.
