  1. I also found BitTorrent Sync, which seems similar to Unison (i.e. it is for auto-syncing multiple drives in different places), but in a somewhat more consumer friendly package (?). BitTorrent Labs
  2. Thanks for the rsync idea. Does anyone know if there is a consumer-level app that does what rsnyc does? Paragraphs like this are scary to mere mortals: "On some systems (notably SunOS4) cron supplies what looks like a socket to rsync, so rsync thinks that stdin is a socket. This means that if you start rsync with the --daemon switch from a cron job you end up rsync thinking it has been started from inetd. The fix is simple—just redirect stdin from /dev/null in your cron job." Right.
  3. Yes, that does seem efficient. However, my experience is that the "take it with you whenever you travel" part is rather prone to human error in my case. But I suppose as an extension of your idea I could buy 5 or 6 portable drives, leave them in my various locations, and then update them every time I rip a new CD or buy new tracks. The last part is a bit tricky, but I imagine I could somehow use Dropbox just for that.
  4. New here, so apologies in advance if this has been covered. I found nothing in a search, but my terms might be off. My goal is to have access to much of my music library in multiple physically separate locations (e.g. home listening room, home office, vacation home, headquarters office, regional offices). I'd also like to have easy upgrading of machines, as the lifecycle of computer hardware seems to be shrinking. I would like to know if there is any reason, other than possibly cost, not to use Dropbox or another cloud storage service as the primary location for my files? Since cloud services can selectively store portions of the library locally, in my "plan" I would just synch the folders/files that I want to use at that location. Then the files can be played locally. But whenever I add to a folder, from any location, it is updated on all the machines that are synched with that folder. I further assume that I can point JRMC or iTunes to the local drive. I'm about to embark on the process of ripping a few thousand CDs, so I'd like to get the architecture right before I start. Thanks for help and suggestions. Tom
