  1. ". . . is a bit suspect. It could very easily be a troll strategically pushing buttons to stir up a stink here on CA." If my post was a troll then I'm quitting this Forum before I get banned. Bye. Mike
  2. I could be wrong, but I recall reading a post by Steve N, either on CA or Auidiogon, where he said that there are few high end USB 2.0 DACs that will do 24/192 w/ USB if the source has a USB 2.0 output and a USB 2.0 cable is used. Not? Mike
  3. Thank you all for your replies. david - I'm using the Behringer becuase my Musiland DAC sounds a tiny bit better with a glass optical cable input than with a USB 2.0(Belkin Pro Gold). My computer is over 6 years old and has USB 1.1 outs - so that's a limitation. I am actually trying to save up for an Off-Ramp TurboIII w/ Superclock 4 and the mega battery ($1,200 should do it.). But, most of my income is from IRAs and we all know what happend to them. If it weren't for my pension and Social Security, I would be living under a bridge. Mike
  4. Hi Oystein. I haven't even started ripping in earnest yet. Just downloaded EAC last week and need to learn how to use that first. I have like 3 or 4 tutorials on that. Mike
  5. Brown bavarian mustard (w/ seeds) smeared on speaker binding posts just once a week. Incredible improvement to lower/mid treble. Did a double blind ABX with my two dogs and they agreed. Mike (lol)
  6. Hi Everybody. It seems that no matter what playback format I use (WAV, Direct Sound, ASIO) they all sound the same. They sound good, but the same. My sources: MP3 downloads (256 from Walmart and 320 kbps from B&W Music Club); flac downloads from HD Tracks and B&W Music Club (720 - 1014 kbps); CDs ripped in wma (858 and 1122 kbps); CDs ripped in wav (1411 kbps); HD (?) from HD Tracks downloaded in flac (2264 kbps). As one might expect, the lossless sources sound better than the lossy, but changing the playback format on a particular format makes no difference that I can hear. Also, my DAC is an upsampler - its not automatic - you get to select what playback is samples. I can't hear a difference between 16/44.1, 24/44.1, 16/48 or 24/48. My system: Viper custom desktop PC: Windows XP Home (SP3) JRiver Media Jukebox EAC - haven't used it yet ASIO4ALL USB out to Behringer UCA202 (used to convert USB to optical)> optical to Musiland MD10 USB DAC> Parasound 2100 preamp> Aragon 4004 MKII 200w x 2 amp> Dali Ikon6 towers Sunfire True Subwoofer Is the problem my hearing? I am 62 year old and have a 40% hearing loss in my right ear (caused by a Who concert in 1970 - truth). I have no complaints with how the system sounds. I'm just curious as to why I can't hear differences in playback modes. Thank you. Mike
  7. Hi robby. You might check these out; they all have UBN in and are under $200 US: > Giga Lab Moon DAC (NOS) $185 @ Pacific Valve & Electric. I used to have one and its an exellent value. Very well built. > Musiland LILO $99 @ Pacific Valve > Diyeden SVDAC 06 $169 @ Pacific Valve > Diyeden SVDAC05 $199 @ Pacific Valve > Fubar II $137 @ Audiophile Products > Super Pro DAC707SE $120 @ Audiomagus (might not be in stock) > King Rex UD-01 $177 @ Audiomagus
  8. I doubt I'm gonna get any mods done anyways. I just spent all my extra $$$ on those Quantum Clips. (Oh my God, I hope they work) I just like to know about mods. I have friends who ask me if I can mod their stuff - they assume I know how to do this becuase they know its my hobby. Mike M

Hi simon - You need to download ASIO software. I use the free ASIO4ALL. Google it. There is a $50 program that's supposed to be better than ASIO4ALL, but I can't recall its name. Or, you can unmap. Steve N or someone else needs to explain how to do this. Mike M.
  10. jeffca - Rule #8 on the Hydrogenaudio Forum is no statements about how something sounds w/o empirical testing backup (like double blind ABX). Hydro members have been banned for repeated vilations of this rule. Mike M
  11. markr - I'm not really interested in the Valab - already have a good DAC. I would like to know who, if anyone, is doing mods on DACs. I know Empirical used to mod certain DACs. And Pacific Valve sells pre-modded, but they don't mod anything else. Like, if I wanted to upgrade my DAC (and maybe my 10 year old Aragon amp) is there someone reputable who does this ? Mike m
  12. Hey guys, thanks for the info. I just ordered: > a dozen Quantum Clips which I'll have cryo'd when I get them. > two sets of 4 Electric Feet for my two dogs. > The Teleportation Tweak autographed by Edgar Rice Bburroughs. Mike M
  13. If I were to buy a Valab DAC, where would I get it modded as per Steve's suggestions? I'm about as good at DIY as I am at golf - for the sh__s! Mike M
  14. Thanks all for your replies. Learned a lot. I feel better now, didn't know about variable compresion. Mike
