  1. Hi guys I do have a genre/playlist sorting system & make it MUCH faster & easier to browse through without using the search - i type enough as it is & part of my pleasure is to lay back & look what might i be up for listening by browsing their covers.. after all, i do have a 27'' screen so real estate/album cover size is NOT an issue ! When i know exactly what i feel like i just use iTune's Search function ! Couple of seconds, boom, done !! I came up with a ''broad genre'' playlists : A - Alternative B - Blues C - Classical F - Funk G - Guitar H - Hip-Hop J - Jazz P - Pop R - Rock R'nB - well…….. S - Soundtracks W - World Z - a mishmash of music i compose, participations on friend's compositions, etc… This allows me to spread my library in ''manageable chunks'' & it allows me simplicity, for example : under G - Guitar i grouped artists as diverse as Adrian Legg, Paco de Lucia, Leo Kotke, Don Ross, California Guitar Trio, Michael Hedges & the same happens in my other ''genres'' Obviously not perfect, it spares me falling into the genre/sub-genre hair splitting trap of : Rock, Classic-rock, Heavy rock, Prog-Rock, Pop-rock, jazz, jazz-rock, free jazz, etc, etc, ad nauseam… When i loaded my albums into iTunes i entered the corresponding letter ahead of the artist's name & they all fell automatically into alphabetic order under their ''genre'' inside each artist's stack, all i kept is Artist, Album, Track Name & Time - couldn't care less about anything else Considering the above, do you guys still think Roon will mess this up ? & what sort of messing up is it - like re-writting the library files in iTunes or so ? I know JRiver, Audirvana, Swinsian & Musique did have trouble reproducing my system but didn't sabotage my library files & i even believe they all could have been ''tweaked'' back to shape.. The Apple software updating system being ''tied'' to iTunes is one of the reasons i decided to stick w/ Mountain Lion - rock solid, never had any issues, etc so… - & not update the OS then install older iTunes If only Apple had resisted tampering w/ iTunes & bloating it, &, &, & just produced a simple, play the music player/librarian AND then offer a no holds barred, all bells & whistles version of it - like they usually did : GarageBand/Logic, iPhoto/Aperture, etc… - but, i guess these days most people buying music by the song - let alone 20 or 50 albums by an artist so… i'm obviously the dinosaur here !!…LOL...
  2. Hi D Again thanks for your encouragement !! ;-) For the time being, although i WILL look into the procedure you mention, i'm going to have a try at Roon which a few people have been quite enthusiastic about So what if it costs 400 bucks ? Got a whole lot more in my 5000 + album collection so what the hell…. if it's the right player, that's it, DONE !! Cheers & a great week-end !! N
  3. Hi D Thanks for pitching in, most appreciated ! I had considered this route but to be honest i don't feel particularly able to follow the procedure or understand it.. Am i making sense ? Anything going wrong won't i risk to ''de-stabilize'' my otherwise rock solid system ? Over the years it has happened a couple of times i mucked up badly & ended up re-installing the OS from scratch, etc… so these days i'm weary of these things ! I'll have a read again & try to suss it out Again many thanks ! ;-)
  4. Hi guys I've been looking for an iTunes replacement for some time now. I have a 2013 iMac 27'', 24GB RAM, store my music on external drives + a couple of off site back-ups & use an SPL Crimson audio interface since it allows me to both listen & record the music i play. It then connects to my sound system : a Roksan Kandy 2 amp + B&W 600 & something floorstanders At this point i'm still running Mountain Lion for the simple reason i HATE iTunes 11. Not that i have TONS of music but i've spent MONTHS of my life digitising hundreds of LP's ( w/ quite a bit of click & pop removal, drove me nuts.. ) then added my CD collection & got artwork for them all so yes, my music library has been & is, a labour of love & at almost 3TB it's enough to make iTunes 11 feel like i'm reading an endless phone book & just about as fun : Yes, maybe because i'm an artist, i'm VERY visual & LOVE having a browse through my music by looking at album art & choosing something that fits my mood... Another advantage i find in iTunes 10.5.7 is that it allows me the dark background against which, brightly coloured covers don't seem to ''sear'' my retinas as much as iTunes 11 white background, on top of that it allows me to adjust the size of said covers AND most importantly, as i selected my music to be displayed under the tab ''Artist'' those stacks are an absolute gem : Many artists i only have 1 or 2 albums but i also have many that i have 12, 20, 40 or 190 like bloody Mozart ( & i'm not even a classical music buff, go figure.. ) This + the genre system i developed for myself ( A for Alternative, B for Blues, C for Classical, the desired letter written before the artist's name.. ) makes it quite compact & extremely fast to browse & find whatever it is i feel like listening to. Another feature i really like is the little crooked arrow left of the track's status bar which by clicking on it takes you to the album you're listening. Easy, simple, couple of clicks takes me any& everywhere i might want Not so on iTunes 11… since i generally do like Apple stuff, i gave it a shot for a couple of weeks, tried adapting/liking it but…. totally NOT my thing ! As you can also see on my photo below, i keep a minimum of things in the left column since i couldn't care less about having a gazillion things i won't use anyway. Instead of going on & on, here's a screenshot how it looks : Now the thing is i WOULD like to move on to Yosemite & although there are workarounds to keep iTunes 10.5.7 working, fact is they are workarounds & they bring up a whole lot of nags regarding updates & the store, etc… & i just can't be bothered to be constantly fighting an uphill battle to be honest.. So, despite i've read a considerable amount of threads here & elsewhere, i would like to ask you guys which of the players available would you feel would give me the closest experience to my iTunes 10.5.7 ? SPECIALLY features like artist's albums organised in stacks, large album covers & preferably a dark-ish background ? Obviously, sound quality is also important despite my system not being top flight audiophile stuff or anything like that Damn, i just HATE reading endless lists of artists, then lists of albums, then lists of songs - sorry but to me it's just as fun as reading a phone book & it just kills the mood... Many thanks for your patience & assistance Cheers Nuno
  5. Hi guys i'm afraid this might not be the best place to post this, i don't even know how to title this right but hope i'll succeed to explain myself in the text below : i have an iMac 27'' which, among other things, i use to record stuff in GarageBand & as i become a bit better at it, will go into Logic X… then i have a Zoom B3 bass effects unit which also works as a USB interface to input my bass/guitar/other into my recording software & it couldn't be any easier to operate + it comes w/ this very basic yet extremely intuitive & very useful effects/patch editor recently i bought a TC Electronic Nova System 'cause i fell in love with it's Choruses, Reverbs, Delays, etc….sonically it's definitely in another league when compared to the Zoom B3 ! HOWEVER…..it NEVER even occurred to me it couldn't be connected via USB to my iMac as the Zoom + it's a bit of an handful to import/export presets or edit them via the iMac & as far as i could determine, one needs a MIDI to USB interface & you need a program someone made ( NOT TC.. ) as mentioned here :Nova "Editor" (Page 1) to do any of the above + update the Nova's firmware, etc…. now, what i would like was to get something which would work BOTH as a MIDI to USB interface between the TC Elec. Nova & my iMac AND would act as a regular audio/USB interface to allow me to record can anyone PLEASE shed some light on what would be a NICE MIDI to USB & audio to USB interface ? i know NOTHING about MIDI, am dreading dealing with it but can't help feel that if it's the only way to access my Nova's well….what can i do ? i just want a gizmo i can plug my Nova into it's MIDI, then plug into my iMac via USB to import/export, edit/tweak & reorder my presets & when all that is done, use as a simple audio to USB interface to record my stuff PLEASE write your answers as if addressing an idiot because, that's pretty much how it is …LOL…i'm at a TOTAL LOSS HERE & any help/suggestions WILL BE most appreciated thank you very much for your time & patience Nuno
