1. Definitely take the Airmotives over the Audioengine speakers. I own both and the Airmotives' folded ribbon tweeter is outstanding. Tighter bass than Audioengine as well. I also have the Audioengine DAC, which is ok & has been trouble free for well over a year now. I run mine via Toslink thereby bypassing the PC sound card and enabling 192/24 file transfer. The AE only handles 96/24 via USB. I hope this helps!

 3. Oh yeah, and I am pretty sure it was head fi that said the DM100 was tested and works with the camera kit. Maybe only in the UK ?
 4. Dont get me started on the Pure i20. I Ordered one several months ago and got the royal run around. Never again. As far as the Dacmagic is concerned I'm surprised you would suggest that I wouldn't plug it in! Obviously it needs the wall wart, that is why it is shipped with one. I bought the dacmagic based on the fact that it has its own power supply - I already tried my Audioengine D1 (no wallwart) - No such luck! I think I'm done with this idea now, there has to be a better way. Cheers -
 5. Oh joy. Not. It does not work with my 1st gen iPad. Accessory uses too much power and seemingly no way around it. Oh well, back to store Dacmagic....
 6. I just ordered one too. My Audioengine D1 doesn't work with the iPad camera connection kit, so I elected to try this as an inexpensive mains powered alternative. It will be going in my garage wired to my B&K ST140 and Cambridge S30's. I have the FLAC app on the ipad and some HDTracks 24/96 files to play with. Looking forward to it!
 7. At the moment I have an Acer Aspire 1690 Laptop with an external 1TB hard drive. I'm thinking about getting into an iMac at some point, or possibly try my hand at a custom build. It hardly seems worth it these days with PC's getting so cheap/high spec. I might end up with a dedicated machine just for Audio, but until then the Acer will have to do.

I just got my Audioengine 5 speakers - still running them in at the mo, but they sound really nice already. I also found something of a deal online at London Drugs (a store up here in Canada that is not bad for mid level home theater and computer stuff). It is a Toshiba USB hub/DAC. It is apparently a re badged Creative product. Here is an excerpt from the "Red Flag Deals" forum: "(it contains) a Creative CA0187 DSP for the sound (same chip as in the Creative Live! External). There's also a SigmalTel STAC9460 multi-channel 24-bit DAC (claimed 107db SNR)". So I bought one for $30! But it is only temporary - I am planning on getting a Devilsound USB DAC soon.

It's a long road to Audio-Nirvana, but a lot of the fun is in getting there from here and trying stuff out. I'm hanging in there!!

Cheers -
 8. I have been using an Iomega 1TB USB Hard drive since Christmas - no trouble yet (touch wood..lol). I heard from some reviews of the product that heat was an issue, but I have mine connected all the time and it just seems to get warm, not hot. I can hear it working but it is right on my desktop in front of me - when I have a bit of time I will repositon it out of the way (of my ears!). I don't know enough about it to give you any technical details - it was only CAD$130 at a Boxing day sale. I just wanted to give it a try. I am ripping CD's to it through iTunes in the AIFF format, and it seems to sound OK so far, but I am upgrading to Audioengine 5 speakers and a Devilsound DAC soon so I will repost if I can hear any faults based against CD playback (of the same music). Cheers -
 9. Hey Chris,

I am new to computer audio and I have to tell you this sounds like exactly what I need. I hope you have plenty of patience......
I am particularly interested in what can be achieved on a limited budget - I'm sure I'm not the only one out here with a wife, kids, mortgage etc.

Thanks!!

10. I am pretty new to all this but I was wondering if you had tried going into the advanced controls in iTunes and clicking on "browse". This will allow you to select where iTunes sees it's library. Seeing as your computers are networked I was thinking you could find the file path on "My Computer" under the afore-mentioned "Browse" tab. I have done this for my external 1TB hard drive, but I don't know if it will help you or not.
