You could also go with a separate USB DAC and amp such as the Schiit Modi or ODAC and then your choice of amp. There are small tube amps like the Musical Paradise MP-301 I gave or lots of t amp choices. Topping makes some pretty decent ones with and without headphone out and USB DACs if you really wanted a single box. Either would put you at or below budget.

I purchased an Audioquest Forest not too long ago and found it to be a good bit better than the printer USB cable I was using. I then upgraded DACs from a standalone TPA USB module to an ODAC. Unfortunately the ODAC has mini USB input so it was time to look for a new cable or an adapter. I opted to give the Wire world Starlight a try. It should be here this weekend!
