  2. i saw think of it this way you have an external 3.3v ps (it doesnt need to exceptional but a cheap smps might be pushing it) route this through a switch onto your 3.3v battery(massive capacitor) through another switch on to bypass the onboard reg on the regen this is how car alternators and alarm system backups work and they seem to be reliable enough? over draining cells is the most likely cause of failure it only takes a couple of minutes to solder on a couple of wires and a battery to try which is a lot less time than it takes at least me to put a single post up on a forum the usb hub is clocking the usb signal so results are similar to clocking/reclocking i2s signals (like ians fifo reclocker or on usb to i2s converters), clocking pcie usb cards on audio pcs Clock ps is of paramount importance and no reg ive come across can compare to a direct supply from lifepo4 but i have heard that a Paul Hynes is in a similar category after a bit of a-b testing anyone going to try it i would advise using a linear 3.3v supply with 2amp capability properly heatsinked the onboard reg wont work for two reasons its position in the circuit will affect performance and it will probably overheat and fail as the cell could potentially draw well over 500ma Do it at your own risk you cant expect warranty if you tamper with it, however if you know the difference between + and - you should be ok After ab testing regular regen with lifepo4 modded one performance doubled in regards resolution and noise floor no-ones house burnt down there was no explosions etc
  3. underclock your cpu and ram in bios for lower power consumption also better sound id be interested in a tier 2 aswell

You have me confused The 5 v rail requirement would never reach 6 a, maybe 3 a if you had lots of hdd's usb devices etc I tend to only have one usb hdd so 1.5 a is my constant Requirement If under clocking is implemented the boot surge of current demand is prevented alough a slightly slower boot time Are you using this pc for movie hires playback?
  6. if i remember correct with the pico 0.8 a to cpu and 0.8 a to everything else supplied by pico when underclocked so thats 1.6 a total @ 12v when underclocked bear in mind motherboards vary a little
  7. apologies for the late reply i couldnt remember the amperage of the top of my head ok bear in mind ive tried to minimize the current required 12v cpu @ 800mhz 0.6 a (ive seen up to 4 amp on boot up of sandybridge pcs at default bios settings) 12v mobo 24pin 0.15 a 5v 24 pin 1.0 a (one usb key installed, usb hdd's etc will put much load on this rail 3.3v 24 pin 0.6 a (ram underclocked so if default expect much more) ssd's, usb keys usually pull about 0.15- 0.2 a each i usually suggest that for haswell builds for those that are really really into it and understand the risks as its not that difficult to make a mistake and burnout a component (or burn down your house apparently ), those that are used to been in the wars will be ok 12v needs 3a capability 5v needs 2-3 a depending on the amount of usb devices plugged in 3.3v 2 a ive seen on various motherboards 3.3v requirements vary between brands and models the pc at default bios settings doesnt really underclock itself, it fluctuates meaning the current demand is going up and down like a yo yo. if you set parameters in the bios say 800 mhz cpu 800 ram it will help stabilize this c states and eist etc are also a no no
  8. Sounds like a great system Might be interesting to try dedicated rails I'd you got the parts lying about Under clocking the cpu helps reduce noise too Basically as low as fully functional
  9. yea you've just been right from start yea ssds are 3.3v but im not going to open up one to bypass the reg but always better if the noise isnt there to deal with end of the day we just want it to sound good yes thats no problem most 12v pico psu's just forward on the their 12v input so it will behave as normal but i dont think youll get the same benefit as if you used a separate tx and reg for the cpu most of the haswell chipset motherboards ive tested dont require the power good/ok power on signal so until you remove the pico psu completely the power up sequence wont bother you full linear atx i think some sort of relay system activated on the +5v VSB to forward the +12, 5 and 3.3 into the 24pin socket, should leave the pc working more or less as normal have not got round to testing yet (still using a switch)

Ssd's are particularly sensitive to noise It's more about keeping ssd power separate Batteries can be a quick test on ssd Then a transformer and regulator can be used for the 5 v Dunno if you'd call clean power to ssd massive but it's certainly a good step forward If you share 5v supply between ssd and the motherboard 5v like with the pico psu there will be noise travelling back and forth Pico isn't a fabulous source anyway That's why I bypassed it But its Still better with a linear 12v that all std atx supplies I've tested Other things to try is having a second 12v solely for the cpu Cpu is noisy and adds noise back into the motherboard Usb cards with a dedicated powersupply helps too Apologies I had assumed anyone toying with mains voltage and building their own power supplies, would have their homework done and followed through on all safety requirements and know the risks to components if errors are made I know I've made a few
  11. what exactly do you think is in a pc power supply, what protection do atx supplies have? what overheating do you expect if its built to suit the current draw comfortably ideally three transformers is ideal to provide the different voltages, so they'll have to go in a box just like everything else im sure youve done extensive testing of providing clean linear power to the motherboard before you claim it to only be a marginal improvement the room for improvement from std supplies is far from marginal dont know why you felt it necessary to piss on our posts
  12. Hi Posted awhile back about such things It Didn't stir any interest I've done linear supplies with 2 x 12v 2 X 5 and 2 X 3.3v direct into the motherboard sockets and usb cards ssd etc Really is a different type of beast What voltages ae you providing on yours?

Me too only not as tidy on atx type mobos(m-itx-atx) i found it much better to keep all voltage rails separate ie 2 x 12v cpu and mobo 24pin, 5v mobo and 3.3v for mobo i also use a usb3 stick as an os disk which is powered by another 3.3v lifepo4 cell (which is probably the quietest battery ive come across but others lead acid ni-mh li-ion etc also do an excellent job) the voltage of all these batteries are been maintained by my three rail power supply 12,5,3.3v
  14. oh definitely keep talking, interesting topic my post got buried ive done some experimenting with lab bench linear supplies 13.8v (reduced for application), although the few ive tested have had varying results generally speaking these linears have had a more than positive effect on the sound quality of the pc's. also experimenting with batteries which seem really good too having multiple power supplies to individual components (usb port, operating system SSD cpu etc), lowering current demand and voltage seem to help sound quality too i dont have a whole lot of technical knowledge, i just do a lot of experimenting Any one got any comments or does any of this make sense?
