  1. Can you direct me to a web page where I can look at how to do that on a mac? That may be what I should be doing. I actually finally tried this with home sharing, and I have found out some interesting things (if not exactly what I was trying to answer). First - let me explain my set-up. Music Source - I have an old dedicated iMac in my office with two 3tb hard-drives connected to it via firewire. There, I have everything in iTunes - it plays through a DAC to a dedicated system in my office. I have it connected to home sharing, and I can access this library for two other systems I have in the house. Home Sharing receiver - I have an old macbook that I was able to update to mavericks. At the same time, I rid it of most of its files and have mail, etc all turned off - essentially, I want to use it just for music. I also have Amarra installed on it. DAC - I have a Peachtree Dac-It that has a good usb input that plays 24-96. My first experiment was to see if I would get bit-perfect output from the home sharing. This did not seem to work. I had the macbook using the Peachtree dac-it audio output. When I played any song, it would not go through Amarra, but Amarra was able to show the bit rate going out to the dac - everything was 44000. Then I used the midi setup on the Macbook to change its bit rate out-put to 24 - 96. When, I then played the home sharing through the Macbook, everything came out 24-96 (shown via Amarra), but it still seemed to be by-passing Amarra. Also - it didn't matter if the file was 16-44 or 24-96, it always came out at 96000. I am not sure what this means completely, but it sounded wonderful. Do you think the homesharing is sending the file at its true bit rate, and the Macbook is only able to play it at 24-96 if the computer is set that way? Or is the Macbook just getting everything from home sharing at 16-44 and up-sampling to 24-96? It does seem to be up sampling the 16-44 files, but my question is whether I am playing 24-96 files bit perfect or getting them down sampled in 16-44 and then up sampled to 24-96? Also, anybody know why Amarra cannot play the home sharing files?
  2. I am still interested in the answer to this question. I have all of my music on hard drives connected to a dedicated iMac in my office, but I have two other music systems elsewhere in the house. I have an old mac laptop that I would like to convert to music only for streaming high-res to the other systems when I want it (I would just need to move the laptop to the system I wanted to use). I also have a secondary copy of Amarra, which I bought last year to use on a second computer, and I have DACs on all three of my systems. So - before I go to the trouble of making my laptop music-only and setting up Amarra on it, I wanted to confirm that such a set up should be able to play high res files via home-sharing. If so, I think I would finally have my integrated home music solution.
  3. I am using the W4S driver, and it creates the warble sound after about 30 minutes. I think I am waiting until Hiface comes out with its own driver. In the meantime, I have switched in a different DAC - Peachtree Dac-it, which does not require a driver. There is no warble, no drop out, but it does not play 24-192.
  4. Hmmm...that doesn't help me much since my DAC is usb input only - JKDAC32. I can always go back to using my Peachtree, but the whole point of using this driver was to get my JKDAC back into place. I guess I can use this solution until HIFACE comes out with something intended for their product.
  5. By the way, has anybody had any problems using this solution (the W4S driver) with Amarra. When I use it with Amarra, the sound begins to "warble" after a bit, especially with high resolution files. This may be an Amarra problem, but it did not happen when I was on Mountain Lion. My music library has increased substantially in recent months - would that put more pressure on Amarra, or do you think this is a Mavericks issue or a driver issue?
  6. Thank you Huy! I got your recipe working with my JKDAC 32. I should note that it seemed to only work when I did the recommended step of changing the driver name to hiface.1.usb...something something. Anyways, I am so happy to have my main DAC back in the mix, and it is all thanks to Huy. To those who have problems with the procedures, I recommend to keep trying. It took a few times for me to get it working, but once it did, it seems quite stable.
  7. Yup - the Apple TV does fine - I changed all my expresses to Apple TVs hooked up into DACs, and they sound pretty good. Unfortunately, I am not getting bit perfect, but I at least can use Amarra via system audio output on Airfoil - it seems to sound a bit better than using the Apple TV interface directly. But, does anybody know if I use home share from my main computer into a laptop if it will reproduce 24/96 and 24/192 sound?
  8. Ok - I know that this subject has been covered in many ways in different posts on this forum, but as much as I search, I cannot find the answers that work for me. Let me give you some background to my system: I have an audio system in my office with my main computer, and I have a 3 TB music library, much of which is 24/96 quality files using an IMac and itunes. I use a SET amplifier connected to my computer via usb into a JKenny 24DAC, and I have an external hard drive using firewire to connect to the computer. Now, I have two other stereos in the house - one using a rehabbed Fisher 400 tube receiver and the other using a rehabbed Eico HF-81 tube amp. I am trying to get the music from my office to these systems. Right now, I am using Apple TV into DACs on both of my systems, and the result is pretty good, but from what I understand I am not getting the best quality possible - I use Air Foil rather than the Apple TV interface so I can utilize Amarra. I just got some MOCA receivers that will use FIOS internet to hard wire my Apple TVs, and this may be the best I am going to do - avoiding drop outs and using an IPAD to control songs. But...could I do all of that and get full quality 24 bit music? Solution 1 - Are there other streamers I can hard wire to my network and get better results than the Apple TV without spending a ton of money (also, I would like to continue using I-Tunes, since all of my music is already in ALAC, and I like Amarra). Solution 2 - I could use an old Mac Book to access home sharing and go out from my mac book (with Amarra on it) to the DAC in each system - if this can access 24 bit music, maybe this is easier and cheaper since I can just move my laptop from one system to the other? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
  9. I realize that this is an older thread, but I want to ask a follow-up question. If this question has been answered elsewhere, please forgive me. I want to know if I use home share with a Mac Book accessing a music library on an IMac elsewhere in the house and play music directly from the Mac book into a DAC, will I get 24/96 or maybe even 24/192 resolution sound? In other words, is there anything in the home share system that limits the resolution of the files accessed?
  10. So the Peachtree Dac-It sounds like it is the best DAC for the money at this level. I may indeed check it out, especially if I can pick up a used one.
  11. Paul - Thanks - I am also willing to look for used stuff - so, I may be able to swing a higher end unit than the $400 budget suggests. Since I already use tubes in my amplifier, I probably do not need a tubed DAC - but something that can give me better reproduction of sound than what I presently have - are you familiar with the DAC WOW? I know some people have said that the DAC WOW is a better product than its price point - so, I definitely don't want to spend more money and get the same or worse results.
  12. Perhaps if I put a budget number on this it would help - what DACs for $400 or less are likely to have better results than the Hot Audio DAC WOW?
  13. Several years ago, I went to an all computer based music system. Then, two years ago, I bought a DAC WOW from Hot Audio - a small producer of DACs in Canada that mostly sells on ebay. It has been quite good for my purposes, but lately I have been updated my audio system, and I now have a very nice system - Single ended tube amp powering hi-end efficient speakers (old school Tannoys). Anyways, I was beginning to wonder if I should upgrade my DAC. Is there anybody who has used the DAC WOW and could comment on various options for upgrading to the next level. I believe that less stages for music to go through is better - thus, I am most interested in a simple USB or firewire to analog RCA out DAC, but I am willing to entertain other options. Thanks in advance for any advice.
