  1. Thanks Elf, appreciate it. After reading that it would appear that they are both pretty average. one is 2k and one is $400. Back to the drawing board I suppose. Is anyone aware of a good Dac/Headphone/Pre other than these two that I can explore? Thanks
  2. having a bit of trouble finding those write ups elf. thanks someone point me in the right direction please?
  3. Has anyone had the opportunity to hear one or both of these by any chance? The grace design suits me better than the ASUS but bot have their separate merits The Grace has been recommended to me by someone who's opinion I trust but its always best to check I suppose. Your thought please ladies and gents, greatly appreciated
  4. It could be one of those freak things where somehow a synergistic relationship was reached between the box and the speaker. Each component is nothing on its own but in this case it just could be that the box is perfect for the speaker. Maybe over analysing in this particular instance might give you nothing. As for a reputable reviewer singing their praises, respect to him for being honest even though his credibility could be questioned. I personally would probably follow this chap moreso than previously given his blatant honesty and transparencey. That being said i have never heard these speakers.
  5. I'm not seeing how that could work properly, having a something move at 2 seperate frequencies out of phase with eachother seems to me to be impossible to sound exactly the same as 2 seperate speakers moving at those Freq's.
  6. there needs to be a "Like" button like on facebook. //pats pewter on back
  7. I have a pair of B&W 802d's. I dont have the bread to get Grand Utopias. Im just after opinions and critique on my thoughts from those who have been in the game for longer than I have. As bright mentioned, i think digital X-overs will probably become more frequent in the future. and with them those that love and hate them for whatever reason.
  8. Im not shopping for speakers, I was just having a think out loud when I started this thread.
  9. That being said, speakers with one driver should be fine then?
  10. Everyone is on their own personal quest to find the "holy grail" I’m trying to think scientifically on what precisely would make the best speaker in that space logically. My thoughts (feel free to correct me, I am far from an expert) It is a bit of an ask of a driver to think it could accurately produce multiple frequencies at any given time without one freq of movement having adverse effects on the accurate production of another. Which is obvious that’s why speakers have multiple drivers of different size. I understand that you can’t expect a woofer to produce treble and so on. Going deeper though. My thoughts are why can we have a speaker with the worlds most complex crossover and have a box with say. 4 Woofers, 2 mid-bass,1 mid,1 mid treble, 1-2 tweeters all having their own assigned frequencies to produce individually. My question being would this offer a more accurate production of sound. I’m thinking of the best thing you could have is every instrument in a piece of music playing through a totally separate speaker. Obviously this would be prohibitively expensive but its all in theory. The reason for this whole thread is I see 2 way speakers which are supposedly brilliant and think to myself how could so much Information come from a single place and not get muddled because the driver is so busy. Its like asking a guitar to sound like it does with only one string or a drum kit with only one drum, if you know what I mean Thoughts please.
  11. I have a pair of sennheiser HD650's u can get the for 300 bucks AUD - i got them from razordogdeals.com in the USA posted to australia for that price. the HD 800's price jump was too much.
  12. I have had a chat to wilco already and seems like a good bloke. We might have a scotch and a listen on the weekend hopefully. Im a bit of a tightass when it comes to spending money on anything. I bought the 802's second hand for 10k which I thought was a good price considering they had about 30 hours on them and not a scratch/ ding. I figured spending money on travelling just adds to the cost of what im looking to buy, but your right only my ear can make the choice for me. As far as i can see i know pretty much nothing about all of this game and speaking to people such as youraelf and wilco over a glass of whiskey probably would be the most educational thing I can do.
  13. thanks for the info bill, ive dropped a line to cafad and wilcon on stereonet. Wanting to thank everyone here for being so helpful and sharing. Its a refreshing change from the eliteists on audiogon. I really need to get some exposure to other stuff so i can form some opinions, I bought a pair of B&W 802d's without ever setting eyes upon a B&W 8 series speaker ever before.
  14. It would seem i have a lot to learn, and you cant even stop learning. I have to travel a minimum of 1000 kilometres before i get to a audio dealer with any reasonable gear to audition which makes getting exposure to different stuff very bloody difficult. Does anyone know anyone out there that rents gear or something? Im in Queensland Australia (Mackay) 1000km north of brisbane.
  15. thanks jud. appreciate the input from everyone. I'm pretty green when it comes to this. Looks like im gonna spend a few years putting it all together
