  1. Is anyone using their UD-501 with a remote control? I think the remote control (RC-1305) that comes with the AI-501DA amp/DAC also operates the UD-501. I'll be adding a pair of headphones to use with the DAC soon and I want to be able to control the headphone volume by remote. I've checked on Logitech's Harmony, but nobody seems to have uploaded data for the remote control.
  2. After trying many different interconnects over the years, I always come back to DNM Reson with Eichmann plugs, these are what I use to connect the teac to my Nait XS. I haven't seen the AQVOX power supply before, something for me to investigate, thanks.
  3. I use mine with my PC, Nait XS and Monitor Audio RX6 speakers. The sound is less forward than a lot of DAC's. In that respect I think it works well with Naim amplification which tends to err towards the bright side, this is especially so in my case using the RX6 speakers. Having said that, I'd say it's more neutral and digs out more detail than the Rega DAC which I previously owned. The filters, although subtle, allow a degree of fine tuning to suit your taste. When looking for a DSD DAC I also auditioned the Chord Qute HD, it sounded horrible in my system, too harsh. One DAC that wasn't available at the time I purchased the Teac is the Ressonessence Concero. I think this one might be worth an audition alongside the Teac. See my post above yours, I can't recommend highly enough the Vertere USB lead. It really allows the DAC to sing. I've always been sceptical as to how much difference digital cables make, especially a USB lead, but this £70 cable made a massive difference in detail and dynamics.
  4. I use a Vertere D-Fi with my Teac. I was sceptical at first when my dealer suggested I tried it. The difference when compared to my previous Supra USB lead was a massive leap in dynamics and detail. I can't explain why there should be so much difference, the Supra lead made the music sound clouded by comparison. I use the Vertere with J. River and 2xDSD upsampling with no problems.
  5. My PC running an Intel E6750 Core2Duo CPU with 4GB RAM only achieves a JR Mark of 1927, but I've managed to get the 2xDSD PCM conversion working with no issues (500ms buffer), albeit I had to use the ASIOProxy driver in conjunction with the Teac driver.
  6. Hi, I've got the 105 and the UD-501. For me the 501 is the better DAC, purely because it's a good tonal match for the rest of my equipment. The 105 DAC is probably similar in character to the Audiolab M-DAC, detailed but can sound a bit clinical to me. The UD-501 has a more natural sound which can be shaped with the filters. It's a better match for my Naim amp and Monitor Audio speakers. So I guess the answer is what sound character are you trying to achieve. With a more laid back amp & speakers, I'd possibly prefer the 105.
  7. Thanks for this, I'm still using JR18 and wasn't aware of the DSD upconvert feature with JR19. Unfortunately my old Intel dual core music PC only manages a JR Benchmark of just over 2200, not the minimum 3000 recommended for this feature. Seems like a PC upgrade is necessary for me. Interestingly with PCM playback using my Naim Nait XS to my Monitor Audio RX6's, like you I prefer the slow filter, but have found the upconvert gives a less smooth result.
  8. Just bought a 501 from Unilet Sound & Vision in the UK for £599 in the sale. Really impressed with the playback so far. Tone wise, I'd say it fits somewhere inbetween my old Rega DAC and my Oppo 105. The sharp pcm filter with upconvert off is my preference at the moment, detailed but still natural sounding. Don't like DSD FIR1 or 4, can't decide whether I prefer FIR2 or 3. One thing did surprise me, how much the sound improved with a different USB lead. Unilet let me borrow a Vertere D-Fi USB. I initially connected using a Supra usb 2.0, when I swapped to the Vertere, the difference was night & day. More open soundstage, fast timing, sweet but detailed treble with a tight deep bass. I can't recommend this cable enough. Although the 501 sounds great out of the box, looking forward to some more listening as it burns in.
  9. No definite date, but I got the impression it wasn't too far away. To be clear though, it will only be via something like a USB stick or hard drive. No support for software like J. River playing DSD via USB from PC.
  10. Thanks for the link, but I'll get it from Unilet Sound & Vision in the UK, they always do me a good deal.
  11. I'll give it a try, but it seems like that's only available in the US when you purchase online, direct from Oppo USA. The Oppo UK website says it can be returned within 28 days only in an unused state. Also, I purchased from a retailer in the UK.
  12. The annoying thing is that after initially contacting Oppo and quite clearly asking if a firmware update was likely for DSD playback from PC using J. River, I was told yes, it would be implemeted in a future firmware update. As I wanted to replace my Blu-Ray player and needed a DSD DAC, the 105 seemed like the perfect answer, especially as every other country in the world (slight exageration!) seemed to be getting the Teac, but not the UK at that point. Now it turns out the 105 won't be updated as I was told. The Teac is now available in the UK, so I could have had the 103 plus the Teac UD-501 for £1200. Now it'll cost me a total of £1700 for the Teac and 105. Shouldn't have been so impatient!
  13. "I spoke with one of our engineers, and we will not be implementing “DoP” functionality. The main reason for this is due to the exorbitantly high licensing fees that we would have to pay in order to support DSD-over-PCM. Also, we will not be adding this functionality because we are enabling direct DSD playback via external storage, which our engineer states will offer better fidelity compared to DSD-over-PCM due to not having to re-pack and re-convert the signal." I wish I'd got this clarification before I bought the 105, could of made do with the 103!
  14. Looks like the Teac is back on the list, Oppo have confirmed that the 105 will be able to play DSD files from a storage device, but not via the USB asynchromous DAC. Apparently DoP is to expensive to licence!
  15. Only word of caution is that Oppo UK say it can't be done due to hardware issues. Hopefully the parent company know best!
